Tonight, Monkfish will be mixing up hot Gypsy Jazz rhythms with cool Bop and throwing in the odd Latin Groove and bit of Blues for good measure. Expect tunes by Django Reinhardt, Grant Green, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and a few original compositions too.
Monkfish are Mike Mellor (guitar and occasional sax), Stu Morrison (guitar, vocals and occasional trumpet) and Gordy Bowyer (trumpet and occasional vocals). With a combined age of 314 these seasoned musicians seamlessly blend Gypsy Jazz with Latin rhythms whilst throwing in the odd surprise along the way.
Mike Mellor brings years of experience to the mix having played many different instruments in many different outfits (mostly dresses). He toured extensively in France with the infamous cabaret singer ‘Oui oui Je sais’ before heading back to these shores to work on various projects including the bebop combo ‘Woo-Woo-Wee-Wah’ and ‘Sledgehorn’ featuring Professor Goigneberg. His guitar playing has often been compared to the early jazz guitar innovators Charlie Christian and Mark Knopfler.
Stu Morrison compliments the talents of Mellor with a hot, driving rhythm that once saw him place highly in ‘Royton’s most dependable rhythm guitar player’ annual poll. Having troubadoured his way around Australia he headed north to Scandinavia playing in several outfits (mostly fur coats) with acts such as ‘Cold Club De RautaNiemi’ and ‘Piston Ring’. His distinctive vocals earned him the monicker ‘the white Lord Kitchener’, a sobriquet that was further enhanced with his timely cameo on the classic 45 ‘Drunken Uncle, Sober Aunty’.
What can we say about Gordy Bowyer? He’s the star of the show at 79 and he’s still going strong. He’s wrestled with Geoff Capes, cut a single at Abbey Road with George Martin, had an extensive career as a cabaret singer and trumpet player, sold used cars, toured Spain with a dance troupe and injured his wife with his medallion as he helped to bring about a peaceful resolution to Greco-Turk conflicts in Cyprus. With a keen ear for melody and an adventurous solo he’ll blow you away with his horn that resonates from a life well lived.
