“There's only 3 of them, but it sounds humongous" - BBC Radio 3 - Jazz Now

Hippo thrives in the hinterland between jazz and electronica. Bursting with buoyant melodies and the adrenal energy of a band stretching their shows to the edge of possibility, the trio continues to make a colossal sound far beyond what their three-piece stature should permit.

Led by saxophonist and producer Doug Cave (Cousin Kula), the trio comprises noted members of the Bristol scene, all equally comfortable with the spontaneity of jazz and the expansive sound world of electronics. Assembling the music from a myriad of analogue synths and a sea of FX pedals, the compositions remain rooted with a strong melodic identity whilst bathed in a wild, raw and technicolor landscape.

Saxophones, synthesisers and drums go in, Hippo comes out.

Hippo will be playing their debut album 'New Normal' in full for the first time, as they tour in support of its release.

The Paul Farr Band is back at Matt and Phreds, tonight joined by the fantastic Joe Tatton on keys.

Appearing regularly at Matt and Phreds for over ten years, band leader and composer Paul is more often than not seen playing with award winning blues sensation Kyla Brox. When he’s not playing around Europe with Kyla he can be seen here playing his own mix of jazz, blues and funk with influences of Schofield, Frisell and Metheny all wrapped up in original tunes.

This performance is set to be very special, as Paul is joined by prolific pianist Joe Tatton, The Cinematic Orchestra‘s very own Luke Flowers on drums, and Manchester stalwart Huw Jacob on bass.

Joe Tatton is a pianist, organist, singer & songwriter who emerged from the diverse Leeds music scene around 2001, playing up and down the UK’s jazz, funk and soul clubs. He is a current member of famed quartet The New Mastersounds and has been playing with them for over 16 years.

As part of NMS, Joe Tatton has recorded over a dozen albums and many singles, playing organ, piano and keyboard. During this time he has toured 8-9 months a year with the band, mainly in the USA but also across Europe and Japan too. Prior to this, Joe held down the keyboard role with UK jazz-funk kings The Haggis Horns, appearing on their first two albums Hot Damn! and Keep On Movin’. He’s also featured on piano/keyboards on the worldwide hit single “Put Your Records On” by Corinne Bailey Rae.

Over the years Joe Tatton has played live sets with Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley as well as Art Neville, George Porter Jr. and Zigaboo Modeliste of The Meters. He’s always maintained his own trio under his own name as a side project, releasing singles and EPs via ATA Records (UK) and Color Red Music (USA).

The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.

The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.

NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.

Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

We are thrilled to welcome Brew 4et to our little club, all the way from Italy! This is going to be a special one, let’s show them some love.

Brew 4et were born in 2016 from the desire to explore, through different timbres and instruments, the sound in its stratification deposited through listening.

The passion for music and jazz encouraged the research of Giuseppe Giroffi on saxophones, Gianluca Manfredonia on vibraphone, Luca Varavallo on double bass and Alex Perrone on drums to move more and more towards the creation of a sound confusion in which tradition and contemporaneity mix vividly, embracing a broad spectrum musical culture that never ceases to be in contact with the essence and nature of sound.

In 2018 they participate in various jazz festivals, including Think Jazz, Jazz Flirt and JazzIt Fest. In 2021 hey record their first album, entirely focused on unreleased compositions. In the same year they participate in the Val d’Agri Jazz Festival. In September 2022 they won the review organised by the JAZZMI Jazz Festival in Milan, ranking first place after an original selection of 800 artistic proposal, they are chosen by the jury of critics and experts, first among the first 8, then among the first 4 projects, they rank in first place. Then perform in the famous Blue Note Milano jazz Club. In October 2022 they participated in the Johnny Râducanu International Jazz Festival in Romania, winning the award of “Cea mai bunâ Formatie” (Best music Line-Up of the Festival). Currently the quartet is working on second studio album.

Tonight, Brew4et will play the music from their first album "DROPS" and some compositions from the second album they are working on.

Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.

Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to perform an improvised piece, a Jazz standard, or even a Jazzy twist on a pop tune, accompanied by a stellar line up and in front of a full audience.

Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.

Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Who knows who might make an appearance tonight…

Romarna’s storytelling begins with the drums. The nomadic spirit of this exciting drummer, producer and composer lives in her jazz and hip hop-infused music. Her irrepressible energy can be heard on ‘Inherently Political’, a super-charged sonic assault on racism that immediately won favour with Anne Frankenstein, Jazz FM’s Tony Minvielle and had her crowned by Jamz Supernova as New Name of the Week.

Her independently-released kaleidoscopic debut ‘25 Songs For My 25th Birthday’ features Soweto Kinch, Tomeka Reid, Sumi Tonooka and Lady Sanity and takes us deeper into her world of resonant frequencies and conscious vibrations.

Having honed her craft with Berklee College of Music, Tomorrow's Warriors and the Notebenders, Romarna stands on the shoulders of giants and is drawing inspiration from the view as she beats a path forward that is very much her own.

Each composition is rooted in improvisation, which is part of their creative process and is also how the two met. Influences include; Floating Points, Gretchen Parlato, Yussef Kamaal, Portico Quartet, Slowly Rolling Camera and Richard Spaven.

Performance highlights include; Leeds Jazz Festival, Band on the Wall, Low Four Studios and supporting K.O.G. and Franz Von (Nubiyan Twist) in Sheffield. In 2022 they received a placement on Sage Gateshead’s Summer Studios scheme.
