It’s International Jazz Day, so naturally we’ve lined up an absolute cracker of a performance for you! Don’t miss this.
Manchester's own Good Grief have three distinct musical sets for you: Two live and one all-vinyl designed to get you - the delightful audience - involved!
Come and recline with "At Home With Good Grief" with the band’s selection of live songs that explore onstage improvisation with a solid beat-driven core. They have lots of fresh tracks, written, rewritten, forgotten, re-explored then refined to share with you
For the third set you the audience is whole heartedly welcomed on stage to dig through our record crate, pick the tunes you want to hear and lounge with us. We're not particularly into elevating the artist above the audience, instead become part of the show by helping us pick the tunes you want to hear!
Welcome to "At Home With Good Grief"
Jerome: Sax, Dán: Bass, Andrian: Guitar & Jack: Drums - Expect Vibes, Neo-soul, Jazz and Big Beats to get you moving and nodding your head
The group was formed in 2016 and draws inspiration from a diverse range of artists such as Tom Misch, Thundercat, and Anderson .Paak, to name a few. Good Grief's music genre can be described as a fusion of neo-soul, jazz, and hip-hop, as they weave together hard-hitting beats with intricately woven guitar and sax textures.
Their sound has been likened to other popular instrumental groups such as Nubiyan Twist, Ezra Collective, and BadBadNotGood. Their performances have a unique feel every time, offering the audience a one-of-a-kind experience. With their infectious beats and creative flair, Good Grief is a band to watch out for in the instrumental music scene.

Dean Friedman first marked his entry into pop consciousness with the Top 20 chart success of his infectious hit single, Ariel, a quirkily irresistible and uncategorizable pop song about a free spirited, pot-smoking, vegetarian Jewish girl in a peasant blouse who lived, as the lyric goes, "...way on the other side of the Hudson".
Friedman scored again with the release of his follow up album, “Well, Well,” Said the Rocking Chair’, and the now classic hit single, Lucky Stars. This magical duet, performed with singer, Denise Marsa, zoomed to the top of the UK singles charts, going instantly gold. Lucky Stars paved the way for a slew of Friedman hits, including familiar radio staples such as Lydia, Rocking Chair, McDonald’s Girl and Woman of Mine.
Friedman’s consummate songwriting and performing, have earned him a loyal international following, devoted to the sophisticated, funny and profound work of a master songsmith.

Alligator Gumbo are a 7 piece New Orleans jazz band from Leeds, who have been playing together since 2011. Having played extensively around the country, and often packed out Matt & Phred’s, we can’t wait to see them again.
A gig with Alligator Gumbo sees jazz from the hey-day of the New Orleans swing/jazz era, when music was raw and largely improvised with melodies and solos happening simultaneously which has now become defined as the 'New Orleans' sound.
As well as the band’s unique and fast-tempo treatment of the classic tunes, Alligator Gumbo take this distinctive style and apply it to their arrangements of more modern and popular songs which everyone will recognise and happily head to the dance floor upon hearing.

A Day on Venus were born out of the same desire that fuels all music - to do something old in a new way. For us, that meant recreating the energy of old school UK garage and disco, but trading sample loops and turntables for the raw, dynamic power of live acoustic brass and drums.
Fronted by the electrifying vocals of Tiffany Parker, the band features a lineup of horn players drawn from some of London’s most vibrant live acts, including Soul Grenades, Full Tilt Collective, New Car Smell, and Mama Moonshine. Together, they craft a sound that’s as infectious as it is unconventional, delivering a high-energy live show that blurs the lines between nostalgia and innovation.
Since the release of their debut EP, Dusk, in 2024 A Day on Venus have brought their unique sound to iconic venues such as London’s 93 Feet East and Paper Dress Vintage, Bristol’s Mr. Wolf’s, and Leeds’ Domino Club. Each show promises a unique experience, combining groove-laden brass riffs, driving percussion, and Parker’s commanding stage presence to get the whole crowd moving.
With a new EP slated for early 2025, A Day on Venus are set to continue to challenge conventions and redefine the live music experience. Whether you’re a lifelong disco devotee, a UK garage enthusiast, or simply a lover of live, boundary-pushing music, A Day on Venus promises a sound and energy you won’t forget.

Welcoming all musicians/singers to jam with the band - just chat to the band leader!
The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.
The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.
NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.
Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

Welcoming all musicians/singers to jam with the band - just chat to the band leader!
Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.
Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to come together with others to perform some classic Jazz, be it a 'standard' or something more modern, whilst showing the rest of the performers and audience your approach to improvisation.
Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.

Charlie Cooper writes vintage soul, updated perfectly, sung with deep and husky soul-pipes!
Not only comparable with classic voices like Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey but also up there with modern soul divas Alice Russell and Sharon Jones, Charlie is a vocal force to be reckoned with.
The songs emerge from another time, influenced by the classic songwriting and arranging of Bacharach and Hal David, accompanied by grooves akin to old school Stax and Motown. Charlie invites you in for a glimpse into her mind and her world, whilst her band ("The CC's") kick it like Booker T and the MGs.
Expect originals and covers which take the evening from kick-backed admiration to the talent to dancing the night away to some of your favourite tunes from across the decades! Charlie and the band are expert musicians who truly know how to get the crowd going with their rock ’n’ roll grooves.
"Superb talent and excellent musicality… Great charm and positivity coupled with that little bit of magic which all good performers have" - Jools Holland
"Wonderful and alluring voice " - Craig Charles

King Heron are a guitar trio sprung from Bristol’s modern jazz scene, bringing together lyrical expression, hard-edged basslines and clanging rock to form their own distinct blend of progressive beats and fluttering soundscapes. Jacob Houghton’s perpetually melodic guitar phrases glide around Cerith Evans’ stoic low-end rumble and Cameron Macdougall’s deeply musical drum grooves. The clear-cut individuality in each of the musicians results in King Heron’s unapologetically different slant on the guitar trio form.
The group have shared stages with the likes of Oscar Jerome, Mdou Moctar and Lydian Collective, and performed at venues, clubs and arts centres across the UK. Their 2023 single ‘Stasis (ft. Andrew Neil Hayes)’ marked their first collaboration with a guest appearance from the Run Logan Run tenor player, in a raucous exploration that excitedly reflects a ‘Bristol sound’. Following 2023’s two single releases, the trio have their second EP, ‘Risky Business’, set for release on the 6th of September 2024.
King Heron are most at home on stage. Always groove-oriented with an emphasis on improvisation, their live performances are captivating with tunes taking their own path and never being played the same twice. At the heart of their live sound is a deep trust and connection between three friends exploring a new jazz impression together.

The band will jam the night away with players of any standard, staying true to what Blues is all about. This is the music of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Little Walter, Leadbelly, Aretha Franklin, and all those greats who defined Blues properly since the early 20th Century.
Come equipped with your steel guitars, basses, mouth organs, sticks, vocal cords, or whatever other instrument you play, and join this mighty house band to either play one of the classics or see where the beat takes you… That’s the joy of the Blues. Oh, and don’t be surprised if Franny asks you to join in on a song mid-way through it!
