Having played together for some time, the Gavin Barras Trio have developed a strong musical identity based around their love for the ‘piano-less’ trio format, drawing inspiration from classic recordings by jazz legend Sonny Rollins such as Way Out West and Live at the Village Vanguard.

Double bassist Gavin Barras is a professional musician performing regularly throughout the UK and abroad across a wide range of projects. He has been a member of Matthew Halsall’s band for over 15 years, appearing on all of his studio and live recordings, as well as performing at sold-out venues including Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, Stoller Hall, The Barbican and Union Chapel. Internationally, Gavin has appeared at festivals such as the Joy of Jazz Festival (South Africa), Uber Jazz (Germany), Pori Jazz Festival (Finland) and Liège Jazz Festival (Belgium), and has featured on BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 3, BBC 6 Music and the BBC Four documentary Jazz UK: Spitting Fire.

Saxophonist Eliot Richards, based in Glossop, performs widely across the UK and internationally, with appearances throughout Europe and Asia. A graduate of Leeds College of Music (BA 2011, MA 2018), he also spent time in the USA studying with Charles Owens. Eliot has worked with a range of projects including the Kate Peters Septet and Big Band, Tom Sharp’s Jazz Orchestra, Play or Die Big Band, the Tobie Carpenter Organ Trio, Andrew Wood Quartet and the Jeff Hewer Quartet, and is a member of the house band at Peggy’s Skylight.

Drummer Will Blackstone is an improvising musician based in Leeds, performing across jazz, pop and funk settings. He has played with groups including the Will Blackstone Quartet and has featured in a variety of Leeds-based jazz events.

Collectively, the trio’s members have performed extensively at international jazz festivals and renowned venues worldwide, including Ronnie Scott’s in London and The Blue Note in Tokyo.
