Nishla Smith Sings: Ella Fitzgerald!
For the fourth instalment of vocalist Nishla Smith’s residency at M&P’s, singing the music of Jazz icons, she’ll be joined by a superb band to perform the timeless music of a music legend: Ella Fitzgerald. You really couldn’t ask for a more perfect gig to get you in the cosy, Christmas spirit. Tonight is perfect for a pre-Christmas date night, or having a chilled catch up with mates.
You can expect to hear all of the classic material performed by Ella Fitzgerald, from ‘Dream A Little Dream Of Me’, to ‘Cheek to Cheek’, to ‘Summertime’… As well as these beautiful numbers, the band will perform a selection of the Christmas tunes which Fitzgerald made her own; from ‘Sleigh Ride’ to ‘Frosty The Snowman’…
Dubbed “The First Lady of Song,” Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz singer in the United States for more than half a century. In her lifetime, she won 13 Grammy awards and sold over 40 million albums. It’s fair to say that her music is worth celebrating tonight!
A litte on Nishla Smith:
Nishla is an artist driven by a desire to tell stories. She is a Peter Whittingham Jazz Award Winner, International Songwriting Competition Award Winner and an alumni of Serious’ Music’s prestigious Take Five programme. She played the titular bird in Atri Banerjee’s acclaimed production of ‘Kes’, at Bolton Octagon and Theatre By The Lake in Spring 2022, for which she won a UK Theatre Award, and has recently finished a run as ‘The Jazz Singer’, a role she originated in Emma Baggott’s Spring 2024 adaptation of ‘A Taste of Honey’ at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester.
