Formed in 2013, the Grant Russell Quartet features four of the most dynamic performers in the UK. Raw uncompromising jazz with an aggressive commitment to improvisation led music within the traditional framework of strong tunes, both original and standard. However there is nothing standard about thIs quartet. Whilst still working from a traditional approach to jazz performance all the performers have worked at the highest international level in a plethora of genres and bring all that experience to every tune. The sum is definitely greater than the parts.
Featuring:
Grant Russell - Bass
Son of notorious and long established dixieland Bassist Ron Russell, Grant has himself become one of the most sought after bassist and composer in the country. He has worked and collaborated with numerous projects and ensembles including NYJO, THE Nick Ross Orchestra, The Halle, The royal Liverpool Philharmonic among many others including being a founder member of the Mercury prize nominated band Gogo Penguin.
George King - Piano
One of the most versatile pianist/composers working today. He has won numerous international awards for his classical compositions including the Gunther Bialas prize in 2012 (Germany), the Barto Prize in 2010 (USA) and the Ibla Grand Prize in 2009 (Italy). He was also selected to study with jazz legends George Cables, Curtis Fuller and Dr. Billy Taylor as part of the Betty Carter scholarship programme in the USA.
Kyran Matthews - Sax
Whilst studying classical saxophone at the Royal Northern College of Music, Kyran became the only saxophonist from the world-renowned RNCM saxophone department to win both of the college's major contests; the Gold Medal and Concerto competitions, also becoming one of the youngest wind musicians to be awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Schools of Music. Since graduating, Kyran has performed with the BBC Philharmonic and Hallé Orchestras, performed concertos at The Bridgewater Hall and the World Saxophone Congress, as well as premiering several solo and chamber works by emerging composers.
Luke Flowers - Drums
Luke has been a long standing member of the Cinematic Orchestra for seventeen years; touring and performing around the world in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, the Sydney Opera House, Montreux Jazz Festival, New York Summer Stage and Glastonbury. Other artists Luke has worked with include Corinne Bailey Rae, Roots Manuva, Kandace Springs (Blue Note) and The Breath (Real World).
It’s fair to say this is going to be an amazing night.
