Svarc Trio seeks to bring a variety of influences together to unite modern groove with Improvisation.

"Guitar-led fusion from this youthful, Leeds-based virtuoso." Time Out

"Svarc’s passionate and articulate delivery as a guitarist and composer of considerable range and scale make him one of the most individual figures active on the British scene today. Catch him, if you can…” Matthew Bourne

"Svarc is one of the few guitar players I’d be happy to just sit and listen too for hours. He’s constantly inventive and a true inspiration to work with as a musician. One of my favourite guitar players. Ever." Scott Devine

"Svarc’s pedal board enables him to produce myriad looping sounds but it is his guitar playing that truly dazzles." Bebop Spoken Here

"Leeds based Svarc Trio’s album “Touch”, released through Bandcamp, is a treasure trove of influences and styles that requires repeated attentive engagement. In an age where album cover art may be sadly neglected as an art form in itself, one of the striking elements of the Svarc Trio’s album “Touch” is the image on the cover. Featuring two hands conjoined at the wrist laid across the top of a parcel, the surreal nature of the image may help to set the mood for the sharp music within." John Toolan (Jazz Goes To Leeds)

KYLA BROX

9:00pm - 12:00am / FREE ENTRY | DOORS 6PM | HAPPY HOUR 6-8PM | GIG STARTS 9PM

Kyla's bi-monthly residency continues into 2019. Come and see her and Danny perform. You won't be disappointed.

Last year saw the launch of Kyla's new album, 'Throw Away Your Blues'. If you're at this gig, pick yourself a copy up from Kyla or Danny, it's great and she'll also sign it for you, if you ask nicely!

Kyla Brox can be tender, urgent and gritty: she blurs the distinction between pleasure and pain like the soul greats of old.

The daughter of blues singer Victor Brox, Kyla started singing on-stage at the age of 12 and has several albums to her name, including the band triumph Coming Home (2004) and the stripped and sensitive Grey Sky Blue (2009). Performing on various ocassions in a different setting, from band to duo to trio, encourages distinct Kyla's to come to the fore - the salty blues mama in line from Bessie Smith, and the tender soul singer who sets out her hopes and fears in song. She never flinches from emotional reality in either situation, and is undoubtedly the finest UK blues and soul singer of her generation.

Tonight's performance will evoke a combination of them all. Fellow musician and songwriting partner Danny Blomeley and his virtuoso guitar-work, by turns delicate and unrestrained, has earned Danny a following in his own right.

New York Brass band were one of the first contemporary Brass Bands to play at M&P's. With a full-on 8-piece New Orleans inspired gig, these guys certainly set the bar for a night of cool Brass sounds!

New York Brass Band are North Yorkshire’s only contemporary New Orleans inspired Brass Band. Hailing from the ancient streets of York the band are at the forefront of a funky brass revolution that is sweeping the UK. Inspired by Rebirth Brass Band, Soul Rebels, Hot 8, Youngblood and Brassroots, NYBB pack a powerful punch of relentless drums, rumbling tuba and wailing horns… nothing kicks a party into gear like the sound of a smokin’ New Orleans Mardi Gras Jazz Band

New York Brass Band is a powerhouse 8-piece, with a line-up of percussion, sax, trumpets, trombones and sousaphone. The band take its inspiration from contemporary New Orleans musicians, but have a repertoire that ranges from Marvin Gaye to George Michael, from Cee-Lo Green to Stevie Wonder, with some funky, gritty northern originals thrown in for good measure

The band was formed in November 2010 by James Lancaster, and quickly established itself as a dynamic, flexible band who can perform outside acoustically at a drinks reception or street event, or amplified on a festival stage or club. No gimmicks, no backing tracks, no auto tune, this is music that gets people dancing and a band who make the audience feel part of the show!

Our favourite boys are back! If you haven't already been to a Speakeasy gig, get yourself down to this gig, it's going to be great!

Speakeasy Bootleg Band are purveyors of the "Finest Quality Bootleg Music Since Records Began.... Distilled & Bottled in New York and Chicago", but consumed wherever finer things are appreciated. SBB play a heady mix of jazz, jive and Harlem swing, the vintage sounds of the Cotton Club and Birdland, the illegal drinking haunts of prohibition Chicago and countless rent parties, driving bass, explosive drums and sophisticated witty vocals.

This is the music of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Louis Jordan, Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and Art Blakey, the music which drove Tin Pan Alley and created the Great American Songbook. The SBB musicians have a ball on every gig, and make sure the audience do as well, making SBB the ideal band for people who don't like jazz...... until they've heard it that is........ The perfect antidote to all things serious! Good time, easy listening, toe tapping stuff. No more shall we hear the plaintive cry.............. "What time does the tune start?"............ After this, everything else is moonshine............ If you want to know more, then come and see us........ you won't be disappointed. This band is AWESOME!"

CHARLIE COOPER - FREE EARLY EVENING GIG!

CHARLIE.jpg

5:00pm - 06:00pm / EARLY EVENING FREE GIG | DOORS 5PM | HAPPY HOUR 5-6PM | GIG 5-6PM

WE ARE BACK with our FREE early Saturday evening solo gigs, starting with Charlie Cooper, one of our favourite singer/songwriters to our early evening live sessions.

Charlie Cooper writes vintage soul, updated perfectly, sung with deep and husky soul-pipes! Not only comparable with classic voices like Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey but also up there with modern soul divas Alice Russell and Sharon Jones, Charlie is a vocal force to be reckoned with. The songs emerge from another time, influenced by the classic songwriting and arranging of Bacharach and Hal David, accompanied by grooves akin to old school Stax and Motown.

This paired down piano solo gig will showcase this talented artist in an intimate setting.

"Superb talent and excellent musicality" "Great charm and positivity coupled with that little bit of magic which all good performers have" - JOOLS HOLLAND

"Unmissable talent and endearing humility" - VIVA MAGAZINE

Purveyors of whipped up, calorie-laden, full-fat funk, James Brown Is Annie are the modern day Scottish extension of Caledonian R'N'B legends Average White Band: smooth, soulful and uber-slick.

Renowned for tight, dynamic, groove-laden live shows, the sextet regularly sell-out shows across the country; adaptable to playing festivals, seated jazz clubs and sweaty nightclubs alike. As one of the UK's most accessible soul-funk-jazz artists, James Brown Is Annie met in a piano bar, rehearse next to a sex shop, and take their name from an Eddie Murphy Saturday Night Live sketch. Supported by National Arts body, Creative Scotland, the group's two albums (JBiA I and JBiA II) were produced by original Average White Band members Molly Duncan (2015) and Hamish Stuart (2018). Regulars on national Scottish television and radio, JBiA's second single, Get Up To Get Down, was a BBC Radio Scotland 'Single Of The Week' in April 2016. The only band to have headlined two different stages at the famous Edinburgh Hogmanay Street Party (Waverley Stage 2012, Mound Stage 2017), playing to over 80,000 people, the Scottish outfit have shared stages with some of music's top recording artists (Average White Band, The Family Stone, Kaiser Chiefs, Electric Six, etc.) at some of the country's most prestigious venues, selling out many along the way.

Performing full-fat, calorie-laded, whipped-up funk 'n' soul, people can expect to hear material from the band's two critically-acclaimed albums, as well as material from the likes of Average White Band, Bill Withers, and, of course, James Brown.

HENRY BOTHAM - FREE EARLY EVENING GIG!

HENRYBOTHAM.jpg

5:00pm - 6:00pm / EARLY EVENING FREE GIG | DOORS 5PM | HAPPY HOUR 5-7PM | GIG 5-6PM

As part of our Saturday early evening live music gigs, we welcome Henry Botham back to the club for his Piano Gumbo Gig!

Frequent visitors to M&P's will recognise Henry Botham as a band member in both The Nightcreatures and Mr. Wilson's Second Liners. Two great big bands who are always very popular with our guests. In August last year, we saw Henry perform a solo piano set at HOME and we were blown away by his raw talent for New Orleans style piano playing. We've only ever heard him play in a full band and this stripped back solo set left us wanting more.

So this evening, following in the footsteps of Jelly Roll Morton, Dr John and James Booker, the New Orleans tradition of recreating a full band using just piano is continued by Henry. Like his heroes before him he draws upon a wide and unusual repertoire taken from various sources and all brought together under the umbrella of New Orleans piano. Traditional Spirituals, old time Blues, Jazz, stride Piano, Rock, Latin American and Pop songs all contribute to the myriad of styles used to cook up this hot spicy Piano Gumbo.

KYLA BROX

kylabrox.jpg

Never has M&P's felt more like a cross between a New Orleans Dive mixed in with the hey day of Manchester's infamous Hacienda night club. If you missed the 90's in Manchester, Mr. Wilson's Second Liners will take you back to an era missed by almost every Mancunian who raved!

Musical Mechanical has recruited a rabble of mischievous northerners to form Mr Wilson’s Second Liners, a traditional New Orleans Second Line. However, this is no sombre occasion: Mr Wilson’s expend their collective musical talent paying homage to the diehard days of the Hacienda, 90s club culture and its greatest hero, Mr Tony Wilson.

THIS IS A STANDING GIG SO BRING YOUR DANCING SHOES!

As the band so eloquently says, "Let's ave it!"

VICTOR BROX - FREE EARLY EVENING GIG

Manchester born blues legend Victor Brox is probably one of the most underrated champions of the British Blues scene and its unsung hero. This may well have been because he has refused to be pigeon-holed into any single category and has produced an eclectic style which often defied analysis. What cannot be disputed is his excellent singing voice, musical virtuosity and total eccentricity. He was described by Jimi Hendrix and Tina Turner as their favourite white blues singer. He is without doubt a national treasure. You don’t need to book a table for early-evening gigs, just make sure you get in early and grab one!

Andy Lawrenson learned to play the violin through busking on the streets of Europe, Scandinavia, England, Scotland and Ireland, before returning to University of Northumbria to complete a music degree in the mid 1980’s. He was a prominent figure on the North East Folk and Jazz scene, working with Ian Carr, Keith Morris, Elvis Costello, Richard Thompson, and the North East folk music agency Folkworks amongst others.

Simon O’Byrne has been a professional guitarist for over two decades. His accomplished guitar playing celebrates the style and swing of the jazz-genius Django Reinhardt, mixed with a flamenco flourish and echoes of the great Paco de Lucia.

Paul Grainger started playing the double bass comparatively late in the day yet has quickly become an in-demand player on the North East scene and further afield.

He has worked with, among others, Anita Wardell, Tessa Souter, James Birkett, Daniel John Martin, George MacDonald and Alice Grace. He is also a founder of, and resident bass player for the highly regarded Newcastle based Jazz Cafe ‘Jam Sessions’.

In addition to being part of the Andy Lawrenson Trio, Paul also works with Belinda Y Los Viñaleros, the Bradley Johnston Trio, the Alan Law Standards Trio, Mick Shoulder’s Swing Manouche, and the Niffi Osiyemi Trio.

FAT SUIT

FATSUIT.jpg

9:30pm - 12:30am / £5 OTD | DOORS 5PM | HAPPY HOUR 5-7:30PM | GIG 9:30PM

Fat-Suit is on a collective journey through music, using jazz as the point of departure to explore a myriad soundworlds. This ensemble of rotating musicians originated in the collegiate surroundings of both the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Strathclyde University, but it has wasted no time enervating the already vibrant jazz scene in Glasgow.

The cast has been assembled from a diversity of musical backgrounds and it includes folk musicians with finesse, house artists with grit, rockers with attitude and hard boppers with style. The influence of contemporary exponents of jazz, funk and fusion such as Snarky Puppy, Vulfpeck and GoGoPenguin are obvious influences, but Fat-Suit are already opening up fresh lines of enquiry. The approach may appear looser and more relaxed, but the aim is to entertain as much as it is to dazzle with technical ability.

Fat-Suit have a strength in depth as well as in numbers, and can call on some of Scotland’s finest young musicians, many of whom were making waves even before graduating.

This is the sound of next generation jazz, where highly informed and extremely open-minded players curate new music for a new century.

CHUBE

9:00pm - 12:00am / FREE ENTRY | DOORS 6PM | HAPPY HOUR 6-8PM | GIG 9PM

Chube draw their inspiration from a wide variety of artists and genres and aim to write electro acoustic music that pushes the boundaries of their instruments. The harp features prominently in their performances, and there is regular usage of effects processors with the harp to take the harp from it's regular, classical sound, to a rock guitar through distortion, an ambient synth through delays and phasers, and much more.

Chube's performance features a true mix of genres and styles of music performed on a completely unique combination of electro-acoustic instruments. Their unique jazz fusion sets include lots of original tracks, such as the disco track 'Shift', ambient track 'Chryslism', and folk inspired tracks 'The Land' and 'Salty Tongue'. They also perform their own arrangements of well known covers such as Led Zepplin's 'When The Levee Breaks', Miles Davis' 'Milestones', and Herbie Hancock's 'Watermelon Man'.

Chube have performed at the Harp on Wight and Aberjazz Festivals, The Black Mountain Jazz Club as well as playing at independent shows alongside various bands. They are scheduled to appear at Wall2Wall Jazz Festival 2019 with special guest artist Dennis Rollins on Trombone. Tracks from their debut EP have been played to positive reviews twice on BBC Wales Introducing with Adam Walton and on BBC Radio 3s Jazz Now, and they are in the process of writing new material for a second EP.

“There are artists who are artists and just do whatever the hell they please….they clearly don’t give a fig for whatever bandwagons that pass through town” – Adam Walton, 10/02/18, BBC Radio Wales Introducing

9:30pm - 12:30am / £5 OTD | DOORS 5PM | HAPPY HOUR 5-7PM | GIG STARTS 9:30PM

Visiting the club at the weekend? Be prepared to dance or kick back and enjoy the band and atmosphere! People like to get up and dance in front of the stage. If you prefer a more laid back night, we recommend a Wednesday or Thursday evening.

Their first EP H.B.E.P #1 (2014) was released on Gin House Records (X Ray Cat Trio, Benjamin William Pike, Mr CD Wallum) on 7" vinyl followed by The Early Years 7 track CD (2018).

Expect original rockabilly material from previous releases plus the odd interesting jumped up R&B/Rock and Roll cover. They have been known to play a polka. The pace won't let up and it'll all have a swingin' kick.

Michael Rossiter - Guitar and Vocals
David Broad – Double Bass and Vocals
Bruce Renshaw - Drums and Vocals

UGLY - FREE EARLY EVENING GIG!

IMG_9606.jpg

6:00pm - 7:00pm / FREE ENTRY | DOORS 5PM | HAPPY HOUR 5-7PM | GIG 6PM

We are super excited to welcome Ella Jean and Rob Major back to the club tonight for their UGLY gig.

Rob and Ella met in 2014 the day after she arrived in London, UK from Calgary, Canada. Rob was playing in his hip-hop band Unexpected Guests in a small room in London Bridge and Ella asked if they could play together. Early on in their collaboration, the two came out to each other. He’s Christian and she’s queer which is simultaneously the most and least important thing about them. Their weirdness and wild, quirky energy only comes out (of the closet) when they join forces as the UGLY duo. They found that, while Jazz, Hip-Hop, Soul and Funk were their favourite genres to play in, their taste crossed over in Punk, shoe-gaze and art Rock too. Their method of making is using a singer-songwriter approach to danceable music. They have released their first single in 2019 called Hesitate, followed by the EP We Could Never Be Together in late Spring 2019.

“ When we write, we look into ourselves and see what needs to be said. We hope that you can find a bit of you in that as well.”

His pristine Southern vocal, timeless sound and honest lyric represents a new generation of hit-makers in Music City–modern day descendants of artists like Randy Travis, Alan Jackson and George Strait.

After signing his major-label deal at the tender age of 19, Morgan began by hitting the top of the radio charts, landing at No. 1 on Mediabase with the Gold-certified “I Met a Girl.” He then released an acclaimed EP and earned a Billboard Top 5 with his 2016 album debut, Vinyl. He has performed more than 50 times on the Grand Ole Opry and was featured by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum as a highlighted artist in the 2017 American Currents exhibit.

We are super excited to welcome Ella Jean and Rob Major back to the club tonight for another great UGLY gig!
