Renowned for tight, dynamic, groove-laden live shows, the sextet regularly sell-out shows across the country; adaptable to playing festivals, seated jazz clubs and sweaty nightclubs alike. As one of the UK's most accessible soul-funk-jazz artists, James Brown Is Annie met in a piano bar, rehearse next to a sex shop, and take their name from an Eddie Murphy Saturday Night Live sketch. Supported by National Arts body, Creative Scotland, the group's two albums (JBiA I and JBiA II) were produced by original Average White Band members Molly Duncan (2015) and Hamish Stuart (2018). Regulars on national Scottish television and radio, JBiA's second single, Get Up To Get Down, was a BBC Radio Scotland 'Single Of The Week' in April 2016. The only band to have headlined two different stages at the famous Edinburgh Hogmanay Street Party (Waverley Stage 2012, Mound Stage 2017), playing to over 80,000 people, the Scottish outfit have shared stages with some of music's top recording artists (Average White Band, The Family Stone, Kaiser Chiefs, Electric Six, etc.) at some of the country's most prestigious venues, selling out many along the way.

Performing full-fat, calorie-laded, whipped-up funk 'n' soul, people can expect to hear material from the band's two critically-acclaimed albums, as well as material from the likes of Average White Band, Bill Withers, and, of course, James Brown.

HENRY BOTHAM - FREE EARLY EVENING GIG!

HENRYBOTHAM.jpg

5:00pm - 6:00pm / EARLY EVENING FREE GIG | DOORS 5PM | HAPPY HOUR 5-7PM | GIG 5-6PM

As part of our Saturday early evening live music gigs, we welcome Henry Botham back to the club for his Piano Gumbo Gig!

Frequent visitors to M&P's will recognise Henry Botham as a band member in both The Nightcreatures and Mr. Wilson's Second Liners. Two great big bands who are always very popular with our guests. In August last year, we saw Henry perform a solo piano set at HOME and we were blown away by his raw talent for New Orleans style piano playing. We've only ever heard him play in a full band and this stripped back solo set left us wanting more.

So this evening, following in the footsteps of Jelly Roll Morton, Dr John and James Booker, the New Orleans tradition of recreating a full band using just piano is continued by Henry. Like his heroes before him he draws upon a wide and unusual repertoire taken from various sources and all brought together under the umbrella of New Orleans piano. Traditional Spirituals, old time Blues, Jazz, stride Piano, Rock, Latin American and Pop songs all contribute to the myriad of styles used to cook up this hot spicy Piano Gumbo.

Manchester born blues legend Victor Brox is probably one of the most underrated champions of the British Blues scene and its unsung hero. This may well have been because he has refused to be pigeon-holed into any single category and has produced an eclectic style which often defied analysis. What cannot be disputed is his excellent singing voice, musical virtuosity and total eccentricity. He was described by Jimi Hendrix and Tina Turner as their favourite white blues singer. He is without doubt a national treasure. You don’t need to book a table for early-evening gigs, just make sure you get in early and grab one!

Andy Lawrenson learned to play the violin through busking on the streets of Europe, Scandinavia, England, Scotland and Ireland, before returning to University of Northumbria to complete a music degree in the mid 1980’s. He was a prominent figure on the North East Folk and Jazz scene, working with Ian Carr, Keith Morris, Elvis Costello, Richard Thompson, and the North East folk music agency Folkworks amongst others.

Simon O’Byrne has been a professional guitarist for over two decades. His accomplished guitar playing celebrates the style and swing of the jazz-genius Django Reinhardt, mixed with a flamenco flourish and echoes of the great Paco de Lucia.

Paul Grainger started playing the double bass comparatively late in the day yet has quickly become an in-demand player on the North East scene and further afield.

He has worked with, among others, Anita Wardell, Tessa Souter, James Birkett, Daniel John Martin, George MacDonald and Alice Grace. He is also a founder of, and resident bass player for the highly regarded Newcastle based Jazz Cafe ‘Jam Sessions’.

In addition to being part of the Andy Lawrenson Trio, Paul also works with Belinda Y Los Viñaleros, the Bradley Johnston Trio, the Alan Law Standards Trio, Mick Shoulder’s Swing Manouche, and the Niffi Osiyemi Trio.

Fat-Suit is on a collective journey through music, using jazz as the point of departure to explore a myriad soundworlds. This ensemble of rotating musicians originated in the collegiate surroundings of both the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Strathclyde University, but it has wasted no time enervating the already vibrant jazz scene in Glasgow.

The cast has been assembled from a diversity of musical backgrounds and it includes folk musicians with finesse, house artists with grit, rockers with attitude and hard boppers with style. The influence of contemporary exponents of jazz, funk and fusion such as Snarky Puppy, Vulfpeck and GoGoPenguin are obvious influences, but Fat-Suit are already opening up fresh lines of enquiry. The approach may appear looser and more relaxed, but the aim is to entertain as much as it is to dazzle with technical ability.

Fat-Suit have a strength in depth as well as in numbers, and can call on some of Scotland’s finest young musicians, many of whom were making waves even before graduating.

This is the sound of next generation jazz, where highly informed and extremely open-minded players curate new music for a new century.

Chube draw their inspiration from a wide variety of artists and genres and aim to write electro acoustic music that pushes the boundaries of their instruments. Chube's performance features a true mix of genres and styles of music performed on a completely unique combination of electro-acoustic instruments. Their unique jazz fusion sets include lots of original tracks, such as the disco track 'Shift', ambient track 'Chryslism', and folk inspired tracks 'The Land' and 'Salty Tongue'. They also perform their own arrangements of well known covers such as Led Zepplin's 'When The Levee Breaks', Miles Davis' 'Milestones', and Herbie Hancock's 'Watermelon Man'.

Chube have performed at the Harp on Wight and Aberjazz Festivals, The Black Mountain Jazz Club as well as playing at independent shows alongside various bands. The Castaways are a 7-piece band playing a uniquely authentic mix of 1950's/60's ska, reggae, calypso and soul from the likes of The Skatalites, Earnest Ranglin, Jimmy Cliff, Prince Bister, Sonny Rollins and Don Drummond. It was formed in 2012 by Stockport-born trombonist Mel Howard, who was inspired by the chilled-out, laid-back soulful vibe of those early Jamaican jazz musicians (notably Don Drummond) who influenced the Coventry Two Tone gang amongst others. Manchester/Macclesfield based band members bring their own jazz, soul and rock influences to the mix, including Linda Howard (alto sax/flute/vox), Ed Hornby (tenor sax/vox), Pete Robinson (keys), Ollie Collins (bass/vox), Fil Hill (guitar) and Neil Marshall (kit).

Svarc Trio seeks to bring a variety of influences together to unite modern groove with Improvisation.

"Guitar-led fusion from this youthful, Leeds-based virtuoso." Time Out

"Svarc’s passionate and articulate delivery as a guitarist and composer of considerable range and scale make him one of the most individual figures active on the British scene today. Catch him, if you can…” Matthew Bourne

"Svarc is one of the few guitar players I’d be happy to just sit and listen too for hours. He’s constantly inventive and a true inspiration to work with as a musician. One of my favourite guitar players. Ever." Scott Devine

"Svarc’s pedal board enables him to produce myriad looping sounds but it is his guitar playing that truly dazzles." Bebop Spoken Here

"Leeds based Svarc Trio’s album “Touch”, released through Bandcamp, is a treasure trove of influences and styles that requires repeated attentive engagement. In an age where album cover art may be sadly neglected as an art form in itself, one of the striking elements of the Svarc Trio’s album “Touch” is the image on the cover. Featuring two hands conjoined at the wrist laid across the top of a parcel, the surreal nature of the image may help to set the mood for the sharp music within." John Toolan (Jazz Goes To Leeds)

Released in April 2018, this is the latest CD from Yorkshire - based guitarist Derrick Harris and features his arrangements of seminal pop tunes in a jazzy format.

'Be-Pop' includes songs by The Beach Boys, the Beatles and Paul Simon. The band's well crafted arrangements give these tunes a light, airy and spacious outing with some tasteful soloing which allows the jazz and pop listener to appreciate them afresh. The standout track for me is Norwegian Wood, which seems to have limitless possibilities for rearranging and re-imagining. Altogether, an album that deserves a wider hearing and some gigs booked on the strength of it!

SHYFINGER

SHYFINGER.jpg

9:00pm - 12:00am / FREE ENTRY | DOORS 6PM | HAPPY HOUR 6-8PM | GIG STARTS 9PM

Having been musicians for quite some time, the members of Shyfinger came together, desperate to have a band with an interesting name.

All the good names were taken.
 ALL OF THEM.

But this did not deter the plucky crew of instrument manglers, bashers and blowers. Oh no. It made them more RESOLUTE. And thus, they did put together bits of funky riffing, and jazzy noodling, and some of that “head-nod shit,” leaving out the face-melting solos so beloved of musos everywhere, and verily it became a set.

And oh, they did practice.

And they did write.

And they did drink tea, of varying strength and exotic flavourings.

And they were happy for now they have a band to which you can listen.

Good luck, and godspeed!

THE BAND
Biff Roxby - Trombones
Fran Lydiatt - Keys
Ellis Davies - Baritone Guitar
