KYLA BROX

kylabrox.jpg

9:00pm - 12:00am / FREE ENTRY | DOORS 6PM | HAPPY HOUR 6-8PM | GIG STARTS 9PM

Kyla's bi-monthly residency continues into 2019. Come and see her and Danny perform. You won't be disappointed.

Last year saw the launch of Kyla's new album, 'Throw Away Your Blues'. If you're at this gig, pick yourself a copy up from Kyla or Danny, it's great and she'll also sign it for you, if you ask nicely!

Kyla Brox can be tender, urgent and gritty: she blurs the distinction between pleasure and pain like the soul greats of old.

The daughter of blues singer Victor Brox, Kyla started singing on-stage at the age of 12 and has several albums to her name, including the band triumph Coming Home (2004) and the stripped and sensitive Grey Sky Blue (2009). Performing on various ocassions in a different setting, from band to duo to trio, encourages distinct Kyla's to come to the fore - the salty blues mama in line from Bessie Smith, and the tender soul singer who sets out her hopes and fears in song. She never flinches from emotional reality in either situation, and is undoubtedly the finest UK blues and soul singer of her generation.

Tonight's performance will evoke a combination of them all. Fellow musician and songwriting partner Danny Blomeley and his virtuoso guitar-work, by turns delicate and unrestrained, has earned Danny a following in his own right.

CHARLIE COOPER - EARLY EVENING LIVE MUSIC!

CHARLIE.jpg

5:00pm - 06:00pm / EARLY EVENING FREE GIG | DOORS 5PM | HAPPY HOUR 5-6PM | GIG 5-6PM

WE ARE BACK with our FREE early Saturday evening solo gigs, starting with Charlie Cooper, one of our favourite singer/songwriters to our early evening live sessions.

Charlie Cooper writes vintage soul, updated perfectly, sung with deep and husky soul-pipes! Not only comparable with classic voices like Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey but also up there with modern soul divas Alice Russell and Sharon Jones, Charlie is a vocal force to be reckoned with. The songs emerge from another time, influenced by the classic songwriting and arranging of Bacharach and Hal David, accompanied by grooves akin to old school Stax and Motown.

This paired down piano solo gig will showcase this talented artist in an intimate setting.

"Superb talent and excellent musicality" "Great charm and positivity coupled with that little bit of magic which all good performers have" - JOOLS HOLLAND

"Unmissable talent and endearing humility" - VIVA MAGAZINE

5:00pm - 6:00pm / EARLY EVENING FREE GIG | DOORS 5PM | HAPPY HOUR 5-7PM | GIG 5-6PM

As part of our Saturday early evening live music gigs, we welcome Henry Botham back to the club for his Piano Gumbo Gig!

Frequent visitors to M&P's will recognise Henry Botham as a band member in both The Nightcreatures and Mr. Wilson's Second Liners. Two great big bands who are always very popular with our guests. In August last year, we saw Henry perform a solo piano set at HOME and we were blown away by his raw talent for New Orleans style piano playing. We've only ever heard him play in a full band and this stripped back solo set left us wanting more.

So this evening, following in the footsteps of Jelly Roll Morton, Dr John and James Booker, the New Orleans tradition of recreating a full band using just piano is continued by Henry. Like his heroes before him he draws upon a wide and unusual repertoire taken from various sources and all brought together under the umbrella of New Orleans piano. Traditional Spirituals, old time Blues, Jazz, stride Piano, Rock, Latin American and Pop songs all contribute to the myriad of styles used to cook up this hot spicy Piano Gumbo.

Manchester born blues legend Victor Brox is probably one of the most underrated champions of the British Blues scene and its unsung hero. This may well have been because he has refused to be pigeon-holed into any single category and has produced an eclectic style which often defied analysis. What cannot be disputed is his excellent singing voice, musical virtuosity and total eccentricity. He was described by Jimi Hendrix and Tina Turner as their favourite white blues singer. He is without doubt a national treasure.

GEORGE SHOVLIN & GEORGE LAMB

9:00pm - 12:00am / FREE ENTRY | DOORS 6PM | HAPPY HOUR 6PM-MIDNIGHT | GIG STARTS 9PM

We are looking forward to welcoming this duo to the club tonight!

George Shovlin & George Lamb have been playing together for nearly thirty years, since they first founded the ‘George Shovlin Blues Band’, which has since become the hugely successful ‘George Shovlin and The Radars’.

Their music is a fusion of blues and rock, with the powerful voice of George Shovlin allied to the sublime guitar playing of George Lamb. Tony Moore, of ‘Blues In Britain’ magazine, recently commented that the duo are ‘supreme entertainers, both legends of the NE Music Scene; George Shovlin is a force of nature, George Lamb is one of the most talented guitarists in Britain’.

They perform at the highest levels in British Blues music…festivals, concerts, clubs…as a duo, and especially with their band.

Having supported blues greats over the years, such as Canned Heat, Walter Trout and John Mayhall, as well as country blues greats such as Dave ‘Honeyboy’ Edwards, ‘Doctor’ Ross, and Jo Ann Kelly, their quality is unquestioned.
