Hippo is a contemporary jazz trio based in Bristol UK. In the lineage of Donny McCaslin and STUFF, their music buries a jazz aesthetic in a nest of beefy electronics and bouncing rhythms. The earnest muscular sound debuted on their 2018 release caught the attention of BBC Radio 3, Introducing, and Fresh on the Net. Playing live, their hybrid music has seen them entertain diverse crowds across the UK - from techno raves to basement jazz clubs and everything in between.

A second EP, due in November 2019 converges on the palette established on the first release: saxophones, synthesisers and drums go in, Hippo comes out.

The first single from the new record, DAK, is Hippo’s boldest release yet– filthy bass and drums meet distorted sax in a future jazz banger that boils over into pulsing synthy soup. Icing on the cake comes from a balls-to-the-wall finale guitar solo from guest virtuoso Joe Price. The tune emerged from a little piano nugget by Holysseus Fly (Ishmael Ensemble).

Their show at Matt and Phreds will be the first touring of the new material from their 2nd EP, and their first visit to Manchester!

“Hippo then cranked things up with flairs of electro-psych and dream-like chord sequences meshing, culminating in a great interstellar beast. It was a full-on frenzy, leaving its mark.” - Bristol In Stereo
“Impressive jazz minimalism” - Bris 24/7
“Floor filling, rhythmic jazz magic”  - Cosmogramma

Svarc Trio seeks to bring a variety of influences together to unite modern groove with Improvisation.

"Guitar-led fusion from this youthful, Leeds-based virtuoso." Time Out

"Svarc’s passionate and articulate delivery as a guitarist and composer of considerable range and scale make him one of the most individual figures active on the British scene today. Catch him, if you can…” Matthew Bourne

"Svarc is one of the few guitar players I’d be happy to just sit and listen too for hours. He’s constantly inventive and a true inspiration to work with as a musician. One of my favourite guitar players. Ever." Scott Devine

"Svarc’s pedal board enables him to produce myriad looping sounds but it is his guitar playing that truly dazzles." Bebop Spoken Here

"Leeds based Svarc Trio’s album “Touch”, released through Bandcamp, is a treasure trove of influences and styles that requires repeated attentive engagement. In an age where album cover art may be sadly neglected as an art form in itself, one of the striking elements of the Svarc Trio’s album “Touch” is the image on the cover. Featuring two hands conjoined at the wrist laid across the top of a parcel, the surreal nature of the image may help to set the mood for the sharp music within." John Toolan (Jazz Goes To Leeds)
