Featuring a selection of Manchester’s top improvisers, Revival Room is comprised of three musicians closely associated with the city’s burgeoning creative improvised music scene – Adam Fairhall (Hammond B3 organ), Mark Hanslip (tenor saxophone), and Johnny Hunter (drums). The band is the culmination of a series of long-held friendships: often playing together in various combinations in other projects, the trio were drawn together by shared principles of collaboration. “It’s a genuinely cooperative band, where we all have an equal say”, Mark explains. This deeply creative debut album is the sound of a group at once bedding in and breaking out.
The organ trio format has a rich and varied history. The iconic sound of the Hammond organ has historically graced an array of genres, inspiring performers from Larry Young to Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Yet the format has often been overlooked as a medium for exploration, particularly as a vehicle for improvisation and free playing. Revival Room are on a mission to change that, following such contemporary organists as Alexander Hawkins, John Medeski and Daniel Formo. As Adam notes; “I’d been exploring other keyboard instruments for a few years, and the Hammond organ was one that I was trying to get into. I needed to play with people, and Johnny and Mark are both great at jazz, but also have a very inclusive perspective on Improv too. The idea was that we tried to explore the possibilities of an organ trio in improvisation, bringing in non-jazz vocabularies as well as referencing parts of the tradition.”
That combination of tradition and exploration becomes an important guiding principle for the group. Thoroughly acquainted with the musical languages of not just organ trios, but the entire post-bop vernacular, Revival Room spin vibrant new tunes with a distinct sound in this exciting study of the format.

The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.
The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.
NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.
Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

We’re finally welcoming the hugely popular Shyfinger back to the club, it’s been far too long.
Now, over to the band…
Having been musicians for quite some time, the members of Shyfinger came together, desperate to have a band with an interesting name.
All the good names were taken. ALL OF THEM. But this did not deter the plucky crew of instrument manglers, bashers and blowers. Oh no. It made them more RESOLUTE. And thus, they did put together bits of funky riffing, and jazzy noodling, and some of that “head-nod shit,” leaving out the face-melting solos so beloved of musos everywhere, and verily it became a set.
And oh, they did practice.
And they did write.
And they did drink tea, of varying strength and exotic flavourings.
And they were happy for now they have a band to which you can listen.
Good luck, and godspeed!

Christian Fields Trio look to shift the perception of what a traditional jazz trio play, by rendering repertoire outside of the usual in a kaleidoscopic manner. One tune may take on many guises starting out in its original form before transmuting, from blues to classical, to hip-hop, avant-garde-experimentalism and back again.
The musicians freely explore the whole terrain of musical style and history, never bound by one genre in their sonic explorations. The trio is led by Pianist, composer Christian Fields and is joined by the fantastic Luke Flowers on drums and Grant Russell on double bass.
Expect a genre defying piano trio that explores traditional jazz as well as modern tunes from the likes of Radiohead, Nick Drake and Aphex Twin.

Formed in Cheshire in the autumn of 2016, The Gus Glynn Band are an eclectic Alt Rock three-piece brewing heady concoctions of Rock, Blues, Post-Punk, New Wave and Classic Soul.
Their genre surfing sets draw serious music lovers and casual listeners alike with songs of irony and honesty that only the drive and integrity of a watertight trio can deliver in true Classic Rock n' Roll style.
Driving rootsy rhythms, soaring melodies, gutsy lyrics, rock out riffs and wailing blues define The Gus Glynn Band as a force to be reckoned with, drawing an ever increasing audience to a growing community of like minded-music lovers.
“They’re a really good band, really funny, really cool, a touch tongue in cheek and I love the fact that this is real rhythm and blues. These guys are using that traditional sound, where rock and roll came from, they just sound like they’re having fun. The vocal has a very unique style, with a real choral feeling that makes you want to sing with it” - Craig Hopkinson, New Music Reviews

The band will jam the night away with players of any standard, staying true to what Blues is all about. This is the music of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Little Walter, Leadbelly, Aretha Franklin, and all those greats who defined Blues properly since the early 20th Century.
Come equipped with your steel guitars, basses, mouth organs, sticks, vocal cords, or whatever other instrument you play, and join this mighty house band to either play one of the classics or see where the beat takes you… That’s the joy of the Blues. Oh, and don’t be surprised if Franny asks you to join in on a song mid-way through it!

The Firebird Smith Blues Band is an original blues band that synthesises blues, rock, soul and jazz in the confines of a 7-piece outfit.
Original tunes that speak to the emotions sit alongside covers from artistes that walk the same ‘blacktop’ roads. Not for them the early delta blues, or the later synthesis of blues and rock, rather the band are drawn towards R&B, funk, soul and swing - hence the horn section!
So, if your bag is something more than re-hashed 12-bar rock/blues, or if you are eclectic in your appreciation of the blues, or even if you just love damn good ‘goodtime’ music, then you should check these guys out!
Featured on national and international radio shows, and with their new album ‘No Turning Back’ receiving a great reception, the band performs a unique blend of modern blues that no other outfit currently offers.
Tonight, expect the band to play blues with fire and passion! There are cuts from their latest album 'No Turning Back' - 'Hungry Dog', 'Don't Let Me Bleed' and the single 'Holding On'; alongside their arrangements of material from Lloyd Jones, BB King, Colin James, Coco Montoya and Delbert McLinton. Great music and good times!

London-based saxophonist and Dankworth Prize-winning composer Matt Anderson presents his third album, The Town and the City, which follows 2018’s Rambling also by this long-running quartet. The title refers in part to the diverse influences on the music, such as from the whole spectrum of the jazz tradition and various rhythmic traditions from around the world, but also more pastoral, spacious and folk-influenced sounds. This reflects Matt’s upbringing in the rural North Yorkshire Moors juxtaposed with his love of jazz and experience of living in the urban melting pot of London, which is also where this band was formed.
The son of a music teacher and based in Leeds for a time, Matt has lived in London since 2015. Becoming part of the fertile jazz scene in the capital, he has since performed with artists/bands such as Greg Hutchinson (with the Jiannis Pavlidis Quintet), Ivo Neame, the Gareth Lockrane and Calum Gourlay big bands, Jamie Doe’s Magic Lantern and Hannes Riepler. He also teaches at Leeds Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Music.
Alberto Palau is an immensely talented pianist from Valencia, Spain. Now based in London, his experiences living in Boston and New York and working with artists such as Perico Sambeat and Charles McPherson make him much in-demand from leading British musicians. Jay Davis is one of the busiest drummers on the London scene, featuring for example in the Alex Hitchcock Quintet, Big Bad Wolf and his own group BadTrad. Will Harris’ remarkable bass playing has put him in high demand in the South-West where he has been based for many years, and after spending time in London he has become an increasingly popular choice of bassist in the capital as well.
Working together frequently over the past seven years, the band have developed a deep connection, touring extensively in the U.K. as well as appearing at the Bimhuis, Amsterdam; Jamboree, Barcelona and Jimmy Glass, Valencia.
Line Up:
Matt Anderson – Tenor and Soprano Saxophones
Alberto Palau Garcera – Piano
