The Activators are an 11-piece band whose eclectic style transcends Ska, Reggae, Celtic, Punk and Dub, even venturing into Balkan folk and Tango! Their energy, style and liking for utter mayhem have led to them becoming regulars on the live music circuit in the UK and in Europe. As an audience member screamed at one of their most recent Reykjavik gigs: „The actlvators eru betri en milljón tunna af bjór!! “ They have raised the roof from Iceland to Italy, and across the UK from Tyneside to Taunton and Carlisle to Camden sharing the stage with many great acts from Jimmy Cliff to The Beat to The Skints to The Selecter to Fat Boy Slim to John Ottaway to Blossoms to Ollie Murs to Fraebbblarnir (Iceland’s finest!) to name but a few.

Countless festival performances including six performances at Glastonbury over recent years and repeat bookings for the last five consecutive years at Boomtown have cemented the band’s reputation as ‘festival favourites’; added to this they were personally selected by ‘Mr Glastonbury’ Michael Eavis to share the stage with Fat Boy Slim at the Pilton Party.

One thing is for sure, when The Activators walk on to any stage, things start to get very interesting! Music Beyond Boundaries - check it out!!

Under 18’s are welcome at M&P’s Early Gigs!

We don’t take advance table bookings M&P’s Early-Evening Gigs, just make sure you get down early to bagsy the best seats in the house!

Maddie Morris is an artist who strives to make a difference in the world. Bold, insightful and refreshingly unique, they take traditional song in new directions to shine a light on contemporary issues.

Folk songs have always told stories, but how Maddie makes their mark is by turning this storytelling into action. Described by Jim Moray as “leading the next generation of socially conscious songwriters”, they use their work to highlight inequality, challenge viewpoints and provide an inclusive space for shared experiences.

Whether they’re turning a centuries-old ballad on its head or writing something new, Maddie places their focus on drawing out true meaning rather than being true to tradition. Their debut studio album, Skin, (release in February 2024) is a beautifully crafted collection of songs which amplifies the stories of those often marginalised by society. Passionately political, yet gently understated, this is music that deftly treads the path between art and activism.

WATCH THE FREE LIVE STREAM

Hailing from rural Leicestershire with Welsh roots, Nye Banfield is a profoundly creative saxophonist and composer bringing a fresh perspective to South East  London. Through his music, Nye paints visceral scenes from his life and the people around him. A graduate of Trinity Laban, Nye combines influences from jazz  icons Wayne Shorter, Ambrose Akinmusire, and mentor Mark Lockheart, as well as wider sources of inspiration from the pastoral works of Vaughan Williams to  song writing of Damon Albarn.

Described by Headfirst Bristol as “a smart and original composer who knows both the roots of modern jazz and where he intends to take his own music”, Nye  takes you on a vivid journey of richly textured composition and lyrical improvisation. Nye’s tenor sound, a focus of his over the last 10 years, is earthy, broad and  incredibly expressive, providing a focal point to the band’s combined timbre.

‘Trails and Traces’, dropping on vinyl in January 2024, will be Nye’s debut LP. Featuring ‘Banger Factory’ leader Mark Kavuma on trumpet, the performances from  the sextet are richly diverse in influences. An infusion of flavours from 60s Blue Note records, 90s Radiohead, 20th century classical music and contemporary New  York Jazz combine to create an intensely gripping sound.

Coming off the back of powerful performances at Love Supreme Festival, Pizza Express and The 606 to name a few, Nye is taking his music on the road. Whether  he’s directing a quartet, quintet or sextet, the group creates a gripping and intense experience that rips up the rule books and speaks from a combined beating  heart.

The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.

The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.

NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.

Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

Alligator Gumbo are a 7 piece New Orleans jazz band from Leeds, who have been playing together since 2011. Having played extensively around the country, and often packed out Matt & Phred’s, we can’t wait to see them again.

A gig with Alligator Gumbo sees jazz from the hey-day of the New Orleans swing/jazz era, when music was raw and largely improvised with melodies and solos happening simultaneously which has now become defined as the 'New Orleans' sound.

As well as the band’s unique and fast-tempo treatment of the classic tunes, Alligator Gumbo take this distinctive style and apply it to their arrangements of more modern and popular songs which everyone will recognise and happily head to the dance floor upon hearing.

We’re finally welcoming the hugely popular Shyfinger back to the club, it’s been far too long.

Now, over to the band…

Having been musicians for quite some time, the members of Shyfinger came together, desperate to have a band with an interesting name.

All the good names were taken. ALL OF THEM. But this did not deter the plucky crew of instrument manglers, bashers and blowers. Oh no. It made them more RESOLUTE. And thus, they did put together bits of funky riffing, and jazzy noodling, and some of that “head-nod shit,” leaving out the face-melting solos so beloved of musos everywhere, and verily it became a set.

And oh, they did practice.

And they did write.

And they did drink tea, of varying strength and exotic flavourings.

And they were happy for now they have a band to which you can listen.

Good luck, and godspeed!

Charlie and Grete have been working as a keys-vocals duo for 3 years. Since starting at the Royal Northern College of Music together in 2020, they have been developing and refining their skills as performers - both separately and as a unit - to the point where they now have a professional roster of material sure to be a firm favourite for all audiences.

Their combined love for pop music and performance means they can put 100% into everything they do- whether high energy pop bangers, soulful ballads, and even re-imaginings and re-harmonisations of number one hits.

On top of playing keys, Charlie is also a bassist and producer. Having worked with keyboards since he was 6, Charlie is well versed in creating the right patches any song/performance calls for.

Grete grew up in Kaunas, Lithuania, and has been singing since the age of 3. She graduated music school in 2016 and had various gigs up and down the country, including on national television. After finishing as a finalist in The Voice in 2018, she found local fame but decided she wanted to move to the UK in order to pursue her musical career.

On top of doing session work, Charlie and Grete have been working on and releasing original electronic RnB music under the name ‘Grete and bigweld’. So far they have released two singles with a plan to release an EP later this year.

Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.

Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to perform an improvised piece, a Jazz standard, or even a Jazzy twist on a pop tune, accompanied by a stellar line up and in front of a full audience.

Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.

Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Who knows who might make an appearance tonight…

We are thrilled to welcome Pure Desmond back to M&P’s, all the way from Germany, after an unforgettable performance last year.

Tonight, we have the treat of experiencing two sides of the Pure Desmond repertoire. Throughout the three sets, you can expect the band to go between ‘Take Five - Hommage to the cool genius of Paul Desmond’ and their arrangements of all-time classic James Bond Songs!

Take Five

Paul Desmond, the saxophonist who created one of the greatest world hits of jazz with his composition "Take Five" would have been 100 years old in 2024. The jazz-group pure desmond takes this anniversary as an occasion to pay tribute to the life and music of this interesting and stylish man. This entertaining show tells the story of a sound conquering the world. The program is a tribute to significant works and timeless classics of the golden era of Cool Jazz. The focus is always on the music and aesthetics of Paul Desmond, who was a bon vivant and womanizer, tasty, elegant, modest, and known for his witty and subtle humor. His answer to the question how he developed his sound was: “I think I had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to sound like a dry martini“.

James Bond Songs

The range of compositions that shine on the album "Pure Desmond Plays James Bond Songs" in brilliant cool jazz quality ranges from the current "No Time To Die" by the American shooting star Billie Eilish to the original music of the 1960s. In the quartet's version, "From Russia With Love" becomes an airy samba with a pinch of subtle humour as the saxophonist of the Dave Brubeck Quartet might have interpreted it himself. "Tomorrow Never Dies" turns into a jazz ballad.

Inspired by modern electronic musicians such as Floating Points, Maribou State, Thom Yorke and Jojo Mayer, Matt and Phreds new night The Hybrid Sessions sets out to reverse engineer digital music and to explore its creation through a combination of live instrumentation with electronic production.

Curated by drummer and artist Laurie Agnew, this new night aims to open doors for musicians who wish to explore electronic music and improvisation.

Each event will feature a guest artist, which will imbue each night with idiosyncrasy and individuality. The stage will also be open for others to join in with the music, be it as an instrumentalist or vocalist.

A hybrid drum kit, percussion and Ableton Push will be available as well as vocal mics, guitar and bass amp. The opportunity to create live music with an electronic aesthetic will be instantaneous.

The inclusion of unique instrumentation is actively encouraged (the stranger the better) however, if your instrument will require particular time or attention to set up please contact the venue before hand.

The goal of The Hybrid Sessions is to be an inclusive space but participation will be at the organisers discretion. Respect must be shown to the artists with which you are playing and to the equipment provided, but above all else participation will require a commitment to the risk of creating live music through improvisation. Dock of the Bay is a wonderful song, but this is not the night for it.

Tonight, The Hybrid Sessions will feature special guest Caitlin LM - musician and electronica artist featured on BBC Introducing - instagram.com/caitlin.l.m

Every 1st Monday of the month sees our resident Blues band, fronted by the fantastic Franny Eubank, take to the stage for a night of music like no other.

The band will jam the night away with players of any standard, staying true to what Blues is all about. This is the music of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Little Walter, Leadbelly, Aretha Franklin, and all those greats who defined Blues properly since the early 20th Century.

Come equipped with your steel guitars, basses, mouth organs, sticks, vocal cords, or whatever other instrument you play, and join this mighty house band to either play one of the classics or see where the beat takes you… That’s the joy of the Blues. Oh, and don’t be surprised if Franny asks you to join in on a song mid-way through it!

More of a listener than a player? No problem. Kick back in our candle-lit club in the company of gritty lyricism, 12-bar riff-led tunes, and the all-round powerful performances that the M&P Blues Jam has to offer. This is one of those nights that you simply won’t want to end.
