The first Saturday of manchester jazz festival at Matt & Phred's needs to be something big, both a spectacle and a party starter. Alligator Gumbo couldn't fit the bill more...
Alligator Gumbo are a 6 piece New Orleans jazz band from Leeds, who have been playing together since 2011. Having played extensively around the country, and often packed out Matt & Phred’s, we can’t wait to see them again.
A gig with Alligator Gumbo sees jazz from the hey-day of the New Orleans swing/jazz era, when music was raw and largely improvised with melodies and solos happening simultaneously which has now become defined as the 'New Orleans' sound.
As well as the band’s unique and fast-tempo treatment of the classic tunes, Alligator Gumbo take this distinctive style and apply it to their arrangements of more modern and popular songs which everyone will recognise and happily head to the dance floor upon hearing.

We are delighted that the one and only Baiana are launching the opening weekend of Matt & Phred's at manchester jazz festival. The band's sheer passion in creating the authentic sounds of Brazilian Jazz, largely through stunning original music, meant we just had to get these superb musicians involved in the festival.
Born in Liverpool and blessed in Rio, Baiana is the band with the totally tropical twist, bringing the music, glamour and charm of vintage Brazilian jazz and pop to every show. The band has played sold-out shows in London’s jazzland and got national coverage after a series of sell-out gigs at the Edinburgh Festival. Baiana is all about the thrill of Brazil and will be playing classic Bossa Novas, seductive sambas and Latin-inspired arrangements of well-known standards. Sometimes reflective, always full of passion, this will be a night of infectious rhythm, superb musicianship, and beautiful song.
Laura Doyle, the front lady of Baiana, became an entertainer after studying clowning with the great Philippe Gaulier in Paris and developed her unique voice and style on the "underground cabaret" scene in London and elsewhere. She fell in love with Brazilian music while living in Rio where she rubbed shoulders with some of the world's most famous people, including Fidel Castro and Sophia Loren. A born-entertainer, Laura's colourful costumes and charismatic performances always have audiences shouting for more.
Drummer and multi-instrumentalist Vidar hails from Norway and was a member of alt-pop darlings Wave Machines who released two critically-lauded albums and played at Glastonbury and other major festivals. Guitarist Micky is one of the most respected “gypsy jazz” guitarists on the British jazz scene and has performed for many years with Django luminaires such as Gary Potter, Romane, John Jorgenson and violinist Daniel John Martin. Written and recorded over the last year when the world came to a sudden standstill in the wake of the pandemic, The Heart Wants is an album about love and life, about losing and then finding oneself in the silence after the applause has faded away.
The Heart Wants has won a raft of rapturous critical acclaim everywhere from Jazzwise Magazine (who gave it a coveted four-star review) through to The Times and The Guardian, who made it one of their Albums Of The Year, describing it as ‘sheer perfection.’ From the sublime pop of BBC Radio 2 favourite, Everything’s Changing, to the Muscle Shoals soul of Hold On, The Heart Wants will no doubt come as quite a surprise to anyone who thought Jo Harrop was only capable of singing jazz ballads.
Born in Durham and raised on a heady musical diet of Nina Simone, Billie Holiday and Aretha Franklin, Jo Harrop cut her teeth as a session singer, working with a host of iconic artists including Neil Diamond, Rod Stewart and Gloria Gaynor. After moving to London, she quickly established herself as one of the most unmistakable voices in British jazz. Having signed to London-based jazz label, Lateralize Records, she released Weathering The Storm, her debut with guitarist, Jamie McCredie, and The Heart Wants, which has received a raft of rapturous reviews everywhere from The Times to The Guardian and been extensively played on BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music and Jazz FM.

The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.
The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.
NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.
Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

Purveyors of full-fat, calorie-laden, whipped up funk 'n' soul, James Brown Is Annie met in a piano bar, rehearse next to a sex shop, and take their name from an Eddie Murphy Saturday Night Live sketch.
The Scottish sextet's two albums (JBiA I and JBiA II) were produced by original Average White Band members Molly Duncan (2015) and Hamish Stuart (2018), the group gaining a BBC Radio Scotland 'Single Of The Week' award for the song, Get Up To Get Down.
Regulars on STV and BBC Radio Scotland, JBiA are the only band to have headlined two different stages at the famous Edinburgh Hogmanay Street Party. The Scottish outfit have also shared stages with some of funk and soul's top recording artists, including Average White Band, The Family Stone, Brand New Heavies, The Headhunters, Little Feat, and Robert Cray Band, to name but a few.
As regular visitors to Matt & Phreds, audiences can expect the funk, the whole funk and nothing but the funk from the Scottish sextet. Playing material from their two albums (produced by Average White Band legends, Molly Duncan and Hamish Stuart), plus some songs from the AWB/ Hamish Stuart back catalogue, those already familiar with the group may even get to hear a few snippets from the band's yet-to-be-recorded third album.

Charlie Cooper writes vintage soul, updated perfectly, sung with deep and husky soul-pipes! Not only comparable with classic voices like Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey but also up there with modern soul divas Alice Russell and Sharon Jones, Charlie is a vocal force to be reckoned with.
The songs emerge from another time, influenced by the classic songwriting and arranging of Bacharach and Hal David, accompanied by grooves akin to old school Stax and Motown.
This paired down piano solo gig will showcase this talented artist in an intimate setting.

Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.
Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to perform an improvised piece, a Jazz standard, or even a Jazzy twist on a pop tune, accompanied by a stellar line up and in front of a full audience. Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.
Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Who knows who might make an appearance tonight…

Manchester born blues legend Victor Brox is probably one of the most underrated champions of the British Blues scene and its unsung hero.
This may well have been because he has refused to be pigeon-holed into any single category and has produced an eclectic style which often defied analysis.
What cannot be disputed is his excellent singing voice, musical virtuosity and total eccentricity. He was described by Jimi Hendrix and Tina Turner as their favourite white blues singer. He is without doubt a national treasure.

Led by guitarist Ben Haskins, the band has come together through jam nights, mutual projects and a love for improvised music. After a first successful gig at Hyde Park book club over a year ago the group has steadily gigged on the Leeds circuit and by doing so have found a sound that lends itself to the intimate setting of the guitar and tenor led quartet. Exploring open, melodic compositions and stretched out improvisations the band draws influence from improvised music on both sides of the Atlantic, taking inspiration from John Coltrane, Shabaka Hutchings, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Guiliana, and John Abercombie. After finally recording in January 2019 the band released their Debut EP ‘Candescence’ on the 10th of September.
The band has grown out of the rich jazz scene Leeds has been offering for so long now. All alumni of Leeds College of Music, the members are active musicians on the Leeds scene. Featuring musicians from Vipertime, Tete De Pois and Slow Lorris to name a few.

Featuring a selection of Manchester’s top improvisers, Revival Room is comprised of three musicians closely associated with the city’s burgeoning creative improvised music scene – Adam Fairhall (Hammond B3 organ), Mark Hanslip (tenor saxophone), and Johnny Hunter (drums). The band is the culmination of a series of long-held friendships: often playing together in various combinations in other projects, the trio were drawn together by shared principles of collaboration. “It’s a genuinely cooperative band, where we all have an equal say”, Mark explains. This deeply creative debut album is the sound of a group at once bedding in and breaking out.
The organ trio format has a rich and varied history. The iconic sound of the Hammond organ has historically graced an array of genres, inspiring performers from Larry Young to Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Yet the format has often been overlooked as a medium for exploration, particularly as a vehicle for improvisation and free playing. Revival Room are on a mission to change that, following such contemporary organists as Alexander Hawkins, John Medeski and Daniel Formo. As Adam notes; “I’d been exploring other keyboard instruments for a few years, and the Hammond organ was one that I was trying to get into. I needed to play with people, and Johnny and Mark are both great at jazz, but also have a very inclusive perspective on Improv too. The idea was that we tried to explore the possibilities of an organ trio in improvisation, bringing in non-jazz vocabularies as well as referencing parts of the tradition.”
That combination of tradition and exploration becomes an important guiding principle for the group. Thoroughly acquainted with the musical languages of not just organ trios, but the entire post-bop vernacular, Revival Room spin vibrant new tunes with a distinct sound in this exciting study of the format.
