For the finale of Matt & Phred’s at Manchester Jazz Festival, we just had to line up one of our and audience’s all-time favourite singers.

Jeremy Sassoon is one of the UK’s most in-demand singer pianists who has mesmerised audiences both in the UK and around the world with his beautifully soulful and natural style and gorgeous repertoire of his own arrangements of Jazz, Blues, Groove & Soul classics. On many an occasion, Jeremy’s early-evening gigs at Matt & Phred’s have seen audiences queuing far in advance of the gig in order to get a stage side table and be fully immersed in Jeremy’s beautiful performance.

Jeremy has headlined sell out shows at Ronnie Scotts, Pizza Express Soho, the Jazz Café, and multiple Edinburgh Festival shows. He has performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival, The Iridium Jazz Club in New York and has regularly headlined at Berlin’s premier Jazz Club A-Trane. With Jeremy’s solo performances being demonstrably unmatched, you can imagine how special a Quartet performance is.

For this Jeremy Sassoon Quartet performance, Jeremy on vocals and keys is joined by a line-up of trumpet, bass, and drums to bring an incredibly laid-back yet ultimately awe-inspiring evening of the finest Jazz, Blues, and Soul arranged by the band. Not only set to be an evening of gorgeous music, but also a true journey through that music; with Jeremy and the band remaining hugely personable throughout the gig, giving their own stories and insights into the music which they play.

Line Up:
Jeremy Sassoon - Vocals/Piano
Jamie Brownfield - Trumpet
Ollie Collins - Bass

We knew as soon as we heard Shapeshifters' music that they were something truly special. This was most certainly proven when they first played at the club back in February. We couldn't hope for a more wonderful trio to be part of our manchester jazz festival line up.

Shapeshifters is a contemporary jazz trio made up of three friends whose musical roots are grounded in the rich tradition of the genre. Anna Chandler (alto saxophone), Sam Quintana (bass) and Steve Hanley (drums) combine their musical backgrounds with influences from the likes of Charles Mingus, Fly Trio and the Tristano School.

When playing together they embrace spontaneity, able to morph the direction of a piece at the flick of a switch and constantly challenging themselves to improvise fearlessly and unapologetically. Performing a mix of original material and unique takes on standard repertoire, the group produce a coherent narrative whilst keeping you on your toes as to what might happen next.

Tonight, Shapeshifters will play a collection of original material from their debut album, as well as some newer compositions and standards with their interactive and spontaneous approach.

The first Saturday of manchester jazz festival at Matt & Phred's needs to be something big, both a spectacle and a party starter. Alligator Gumbo couldn't fit the bill more...

Alligator Gumbo are a 6 piece New Orleans jazz band from Leeds, who have been playing together since 2011. Having played extensively around the country, and often packed out Matt & Phred’s, we can’t wait to see them again.

A gig with Alligator Gumbo sees jazz from the hey-day of the New Orleans swing/jazz era, when music was raw and largely improvised with melodies and solos happening simultaneously which has now become defined as the 'New Orleans' sound.

As well as the band’s unique and fast-tempo treatment of the classic tunes, Alligator Gumbo take this distinctive style and apply it to their arrangements of more modern and popular songs which everyone will recognise and happily head to the dance floor upon hearing.

We are delighted that the one and only Baiana are launching the opening weekend of Matt & Phred's at manchester jazz festival. The band's sheer passion in creating the authentic sounds of Brazilian Jazz, largely through stunning original music, meant we just had to get these superb musicians involved in the festival.

Born in Liverpool and blessed in Rio, Baiana is the band with the totally tropical twist, bringing the music, glamour and charm of vintage Brazilian jazz and pop to every show. The band has played sold-out shows in London’s jazzland and got national coverage after a series of sell-out gigs at the Edinburgh Festival. Baiana is all about the thrill of Brazil and will be playing classic Bossa Novas, seductive sambas and Latin-inspired arrangements of well-known standards. Sometimes reflective, always full of passion, this will be a night of infectious rhythm, superb musicianship, and beautiful song.

Laura Doyle, the front lady of Baiana, became an entertainer after studying clowning with the great Philippe Gaulier in Paris and developed her unique voice and style on the "underground cabaret" scene in London and elsewhere. She fell in love with Brazilian music while living in Rio where she rubbed shoulders with some of the world's most famous people, including Fidel Castro and Sophia Loren. A born-entertainer, Laura's colourful costumes and charismatic performances always have audiences shouting for more.

Drummer and multi-instrumentalist Vidar hails from Norway and was a member of alt-pop darlings Wave Machines who released two critically-lauded albums and played at Glastonbury and other major festivals. Guitarist Micky is one of the most respected “gypsy jazz” guitarists on the British jazz scene and has performed for many years with Django luminaires such as Gary Potter, Romane, John Jorgenson and violinist Daniel John Martin. Bassist Jesse is a much in-demand bass player and vocalist, at home in a intimate jazz club or playing a major festival. He has recorded and toured with artists such as Louis Berry, Marcus & Martinus, Ray Quinn, China Crisis and Ninet Tayeb to name but a few.

The line up: Laura Doyle (vocals), Micky Dunne (guitar), Jesse Eigan (bass, vocals), Vidar Norheim (drums).
