Now in its fifth decade, the Blues Giants trio play authentic classic American Blues with music by legends such as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Jimi Hendrix, Robert Parker, Johnny Guitar Watson and more, evident in their set, as well as some soul and rock’n’ roll classics.
Steeped in the Blues and Jazz all his life, Birmingham guitarist Steve Ajao and his Blues Giants (Mike Hatton – Bass, and latest recruit, (1993!) former Au Pairs drummer Pete ‘Washboard’ Hammond) have been thrilling audiences for over 30 years and Steve is regarded by many as one of the hottest Blues guitarists in the UK, as well as being in possession of the kind of mountainous voice that was made for the Blues. Close your eyes one moment and you’d think you were listening to a band direct from the Mississippi Delta, and the next, to Jimi Hendrix, and this powerhouse three piece remains an absolutely must-see act, especially when the band wander off, New Orleans marching band style, and mingle with the crowd.
From Blues In Britain magazine, Nov 2014: ‘There is always a good feel to any Blues Giants gigs, plenty of cheesy humour and classic Blues, played with a sparkle in the eye, enjoyable fun sessions are mandatory’

Born in Liverpool and blessed in Rio, Baiana is the band with the totally tropical twist, bringing the music, glamour and charm of vintage Brazilian jazz and pop to every show. The band has played sold-out shows in London’s jazzland and got national coverage after a series of sell-out gigs at the Edinburgh Festival. Baiana is all about the thrill of Brazil and will be playing classic Bossa Novas, seductive sambas and Latin-inspired arrangements of well-known standards. Sometimes reflective, always full of passion, this will be a night of infectious rhythm, superb musicianship, and beautiful song.
Laura Doyle, the front lady of Baiana, became an entertainer after studying clowning with the great Philippe Gaulier in Paris and developed her unique voice and style on the "underground cabaret" scene in London and elsewhere. She fell in love with Brazilian music while living in Rio where she rubbed shoulders with some of the world's most famous people, including Fidel Castro and Sophia Loren. A born-entertainer, Laura's colourful costumes and charismatic performances always have audiences shouting for more.
Drummer and multi-instrumentalist Vidar hails from Norway and was a member of alt-pop darlings Wave Machines who released two critically-lauded albums and played at Glastonbury and other major festivals. Guitarist Micky is one of the most respected “gypsy jazz” guitarists on the British jazz scene and has performed for many years with Django luminaires such as Gary Potter, Romane, John Jorgenson and violinist Daniel John Martin. Bassist Jesse is a much in-demand bass player and vocalist, at home in a intimate jazz club or playing a major festival. For this extra special Jam Night, Matt & Phred’s are teaming up with Manchester Jazz Festival to give all singers and musicians the opportunity to come down to our little backstreet Jazz Club and get on stage to perform. We are happy to announce that this year’s Open Jam will be led by the prolific drummer Craig Hanson, whose band is comprised of equally reputable musicians. The stage is open to all musicians to get up and play with the house band and fellow jammers.
With the genres for the night surrounding Jazz, Neo-Soul, and R’n’B, whether musicians want to play a standard, a unique twist on a popular tune, or simply see where the beat takes them, all is welcome. Bring along your vocal cords, guitars, brass, strings, and whatever other instruments you play, and play alongside like-minded music lovers.
Over the years, the Matt & Phred’s Jam Nights have attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band, to name but a few… Who knows who might be in the audience and on stage tonight. You can certainly expect to see some familiar faces from the rest of the Manchester Jazz Festival line up, as well as those who have built a stellar reputation among the Northern music scene.
More of a listener than a player? No problem, there will be plenty of room for you to kick back and watch the evening unfold. It’s fair to say anything could happen.
A little on Craig Hanson, jam leader:
Craig is an acclaimed musician on the Manchester scene. He performs and tours with many artists including 6x Grammy Nominated artist Yola. He was one half of spiritual funk jazz duo Skeltr, winning various awards and releasing two successful records. Craig is now working behind the scenes on his own brand new project (all to be revealed). He is very excited to be leading the MJF Jazz Jam ’23!

Arun Ghosh is a British-Asian clarinettist, composer and bandleader.
A charismatic and communicative performer, and a leading light in British jazz, Arun and his band deliver a passionate sound driven by soaring melodies, hypnotic rhythms and transcendental textures.
Arun grew up in Bolton, and cut his teeth within Manchester’s vibrant jazz scene. Since then he has released five acclaimed albums, and toured nationally and internationally.
His most recent album, Seclused in Light was composed and recorded during lockdown isolation, and under the shadow of grief; but it was released and toured in March 2022, as an emotional return to live music, and a celebration of life, emergence and togetherness.
Twice awarded Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards, Arun’s musical style takes a multi-era / multi-genre approach; where numerous strands of jazz join forces with a myriad of musical influences: from jungle to punk, blues to Bollywood...and beyond.
This open-eared aesthetic and musical philosophy, and his bringing together of South-Asian raags (melodies) and taals (rhythms) with jazz culture and instrumentation, has led him to be considered a renowned innovator of modern IndoJazz.
Arun is overjoyed to return to perform as part of Manchester Jazz Festival in this special, homecoming show at Matt & Phred’s.

Alligator Gumbo are a 7 piece New Orleans jazz band from Leeds, who have been playing together since 2011. Having played extensively around the country, and often packed out Matt & Phred’s, we can’t wait to see them again.
A gig with Alligator Gumbo sees jazz from the hey-day of the New Orleans swing/jazz era, when music was raw and largely improvised with melodies and solos happening simultaneously which has now become defined as the 'New Orleans' sound.
As well as the band’s unique and fast-tempo treatment of the classic tunes, Alligator Gumbo take this distinctive style and apply it to their arrangements of more modern and popular songs which everyone will recognise and happily head to the dance floor upon hearing.

With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.
The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.
NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.
Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

Sam Jefferson is steeped in the folklore of his ancestors who worked the coal pits of Yorkshire’s West Riding by day, and performed in music halls at night. With dynamic sets that span intense balladry to soulful Blues and Jazz, Sam’s virtuosic fluidity is always in service of the story behind the song.
At the heart of Sam’s music is an astonishing rawness and authenticity; one which allows him to seamlessly blend the sound of his own roots with those that grew Blues and Jazz in America. The way that he writes and plays within these traditions could make it appear as though the Mississippi ran alongside the coal seams of Yorkshire.
With influences from Robert Johnson, T-Bone Walker, and The Allman Brothers, to John Martyn, Bert Jansch, John Scofield and Tom Waits, Sam's ability as multi-instrumentalist to build up the sound of a driving combo on stage, then strip it back to it’s rawest components, makes for a vital experience.
'A consummate songwriter, Sam Jefferson brings a story to life.' - BBC Radio Scotland
Sing Beneath The Sun , inspired by letters and photographs from the lives of his great-grandparents, set off a tour that saw him perform to 2,000 people in Ypres, opening the Imperial War Museum's ‘Lest We Forget’ exhibition, with sold out concerts at The Bridgewater Hall, The Met, and supporting folk legend Ralph McTell.
'Outstanding Musicianship' - Ralph McTell
'Beautiful songs' - Tim Edey
'Really fine picking, voice, and song-writing. Sam is carrying Blues and Folk tradition on in his own way' - Toby Walker

Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.
Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to perform an improvised piece, a Jazz standard, or even a Jazzy twist on a pop tune, accompanied by a stellar line up and in front of a full audience.
Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.
Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Who knows who might make an appearance tonight…

Charlie Cooper writes vintage soul, updated perfectly, sung with deep and husky soul-pipes! Not only comparable with classic voices like Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey but also up there with modern soul divas Alice Russell and Sharon Jones, Charlie is a vocal force to be reckoned with.
The songs emerge from another time, influenced by the classic songwriting and arranging of Bacharach and Hal David, accompanied by grooves akin to old school Stax and Motown.
This paired down piano solo gig will showcase this talented artist in an intimate setting.
