GEORGIA BRAY
Birmingham based singer-songwriter Georgia Bray has just released her debut single ‘Hotel Room’. With colourful, melodic vocals, Hotel Room creates a euphonic sound, infused with Neo-Soul and jazz influences telling the story of a lovers first night together.
Hotel Room, produced by Scott Ralph, brings an irresistible blend of Dance and 70’s-era Funk/Jazz, and eloquent storytelling and infectious groove. Georgia explains the message of the song as “A lovers first night together, feeling a magnetic attraction, instantly connected and a burning desire for more.”
With a rooted love for Jazz music, from growing up listening to Nina Simone, Melody Gardot and Ella Fitzgerald, she now writes in both pop and jazz styles, creating the perfect balance. The 23-year-old’s debut television appearance was made in 2019 when she became a quarter-finalist on The Voice UK 2019 on Team Olly Murs. She has also played at venues all over the UK including upstairs in the iconic jazz venue Ronnie Scott’s, London. Taking influence from Julie London, Corrine Bailey Rae, Yazmin Lacy, she has perfected her sound as a Jazz- Pop artist. Georgia is set to release an EP in the early summer of 2021 which will fully explore her new sound as an emerging artist.
J CHAMBERS
Manchester-based poet and Hip Hop artist J Chambers has just released his powerful new single ‘Sirens‘, featuring reggae artist Dei.3avu (pronounced Déjà Vu). The single is part of the EP ‘Escape The Kingdom’: an exploration of being Black and British within contemporary English Culture.
‘Sirens’ is a reggae driven production with a fiery flow. It plays on the dual meaning of the word siren, both as a metaphorical soundtrack to the oppression of Black Britons and, mythologically speaking, as a source of distraction preventing progress being made. ‘Duppy Dub’, follows and is a no holds barred freestyle that addresses the stress of being an independent artist, determined to have a positive impact both locally and globally.
Zach Okonkwo
If you've enjoyed a Matt & Phred's Jam Session, there's a good chance that Zach is the man behind the beat. A regular face amongst various line ups, we're delighted to see that Zach has released his DEBUT SINGLE: 'Hypothetical'.
All proceeds from the single will be given to charity.
Here's some words about the track from Zach:
'I found myself (like many others) looking back on the hardships that Blacks have faced throughout Western history as well as more personally contemplating the negative ways I have been treated due to the colour of my skin. After seeing the bravery of many Blacks who have shared their stories and perspectives I decided to write music to help me overcome some of the emotions that have been trapped in my head for years.'
ENKI Quartet
Manchester-based jazz ensemble ENKI Quartet have just released their new EP ENKI Quartet on MSC Records. Bridging the gap between straight-ahead playing informed by a deep knowledge of the jazz tradition, and the more lyrical, groove-based styles of the UK jazz explosion, ENKI Quartet demonstrates the groups considerable development in both their performance and compositional style.
ENKI Quartet are a young jazz group with an international outlook, and this spirit is reflected through ENKI Quartet in the European collaboration that transpired in the EP’s creation. The EP and accompanying videos were all recorded at Unison Studios in Differdange, Luxembourg, a collaboration that came about via Luxembourgish drummer David Hoffmann, who has strong ties to the area’s jazz scene. Sam Davies (keys), Harrison Perkins (alto saxophone), and Dan Lawrence (bass) all made it over for the recording in June, helped by a temporary halt in UK-EU travel restrictions. Plans for more tours and recordings were put on ice by the pandemic, so, whilst over for the recording, ENKI took the opportunity to play their first tour of continental Europe, playing sell-out shows across Luxembourg and Germany, at Neumunster Abbey Cultural Exchange Center and the "Jazz im Brunnenhof" concert series in Trier.
Recorded and mixed by Cedric Fischer and mastered by Tom Gatti, ENKI Quartet maintains the liveness of the performance whilst also producing a polished finished product. ENKI Quartet also continues the home-grown spirit established on their first EP, The Keppel Road Sessions. Filmed by videographers at FOQUS, the video provides new and old fans of ENKI Quartet with an exciting way to watch the live recording process of Long Days, Ursula and Rift.
POOR MOI
Bringing intricate melodies woven through thought-provoking tales straight from the gut, Poor Moi simultaneously navigates Scottish indie/folk music whilst wandering the avenues of Americana.
This brand new collective, fronted by folk and roots singer-songwriter Memphis Gerald, brings together experienced session musicians who now branch out to write their own material in a unique style, where notes of traditional Americana meet modern music innovation. The themes are contemporary and relatable while drawing on influences from a different time. Combining heart-rending lap steel and country guitar licks with synths, contemporary grooves and everyday tales of emotional turmoil in bleak and sodden landscapes, the sound is at once familiar and yet like nothing you've heard before.
Poor Moi's new single 'Tiny Circles' is available now!

LIQUID BEACH
From the shore to the streets, Liquid Beach is a project born from a shared love of all things that groove. The production trio from Manchester honed their craft of carefully blended jazz, soul and house through the vibrant and diverse scene of the northern city. Calling upon their diverse influences they aim to seamlessly blend the lines between live instrumentation and electronic production. Songs that sound just as at home on sandy beaches as they do in the darkest of night clubs.
Liquid Beach’s latest releases are ‘Leaves’ and ‘Empathy’:
Leaves
In a slight departure from our usual house sound, leaves is a deep electronic soul slow burner - a sonic encapsulation of the colours of nature featuring hypnotic rolling bass lines, dream like vocals and anthemic horn arrangements designed to both ease the mind and uplift the spirit. We specialise in Summery music, but this one was definitely the perfect winter tune with the lines: "Leaves on the trees fall down to my knees" and "I'll keep you warm". This release was accompanied by an animation of the single artwork.
Empathy
During Lockdown we had a lot of time to write and luckily for us the way we write was largely unaffected. Writing is therapy for me and Breonna Taylors murder had me dealing with a lot, then lockdown hit and the world had to pay attention to George Floyd's murder, I had to write something and it had to be honest. British racism is covert and I just wanted to get some stuff of my chest at the same time as letting people know we're on the same side, everyone just needs allies
- Written by Lila (vocals)
HARRY KEEBLE QUARTET
This North-East based quartet is led by young tenor saxophonist and recent Leeds Conservatoire graduate, Harry Keeble. In the ensemble, he has the fortune to work with amazing musicians such as fellow Leeds Conservatoire graduate Abbie Finn on drums, as well as pillars of the Newcastle jazz scene Andy Champion and Mark Williams on bass and guitar respectively.
The music of the quartet could easily be described as energetic and high-octane, but it’s not without its moments of elegance and beauty from the occasional ballad. The choice of repertoire is diverse, from the outstanding compositions of Wayne Shorter and Chick Corea through to more modern ones by the likes of Kurt Rosenwinkel and Chris Potter. Cutting through the classics however is a series of originals written by the band, a collection that is expanding with every passing month.
Harry Keeble Quartet is new to the jazz scene, but will be playing gigs as soon as is possible. For now, we highly recommend watching this space! The ensemble’s debut gig was at The Globe in Newcastle, which was live streamed to many appreciative and admiring viewers. You can watch the quartet playing Mike Stern’s ‘Chromazone’ here:

Dr Ade Fabola
Ade’s sound is unique and eclectic, as evidenced by audiences’ comparisons to Passenger in guitar fingerpicking, Tallest Man on Earth in lyricism, Jack Johnson in melodic compositions and Tracy Chapman in vocal timbre. In each performance, you can expect a solid collection of feel-good friendly acoustic guitar-driven tracks, with solid hooks and quirky lyrics amid beautiful finger-picked guitar.
Ade’s latest single is ‘Something Good’:
SUSAN HARRIS
Susan Harris is a singer-songwriter whose style falls somewhere between blues and jazz, aiming to make music that jumps out of the speakers and energise the listener.
Having played other people's music for most of her life, it's only in the last 3 years that Susan started writing her own tunes. Susan is passionate about representing all the women who wonder if they could do that thing they always wanted to do - (yes you can).
Influences range from Stevie to Kate Bush, but American blues-jazz giants Keb Mo and Robben Ford light the way for her on this journey.
Susan will be building an album track by track over the next year but for now enjoy Susan’s debut single, ‘You Got me’:
RORY ASHCROFT
Rory Ashcroft is a 25 year old multi-genre instrumentalist from the Midlands. Influenced by the likes of Nightmares On Wax, Massive Attack, and Moby to name but a few. Rory has spent the last year developing his sound as an independent musician.
Having such a strong passion for the sound which his inspirations were creating, with such a vast mix of genres on the table, left Rory with a vision for a sound which he could create in order to resonate with individuals on their own levels. Today, Rory produces original music with the ambition of giving people the soundtrack and release they need in music.
Rory’s latest single is ‘Nimbus’. Here’s some words from Rory on the track:
Nimbus came to me after taking myself for a stroll, it was a lovely sunny winters day and having left my earphones at home all that was ringing round in my head was the last song I’d listened to was Fair Play - Lucy McWilliams & Malaki.
There’s a certain sound from the guitar in that song that just fits perfectly with a sunny day. I had an idea in mind for a melody to be accompanied by a saxophone as I was watching clouds float through the sky. With the Fair Play guitar licks still in my head, I turned around to create what I was hearing as it was all fitting so perfectly together, 24 hours later Nimbus was born.
Mat Walklate
Mat Walklate is a forceful, dynamic harmonica-player, with a rich, soulful baritone and a bag full of great Blues songs. James Lawley is a scintillating, powerful guitarist; a stalwart of the Manchester blues scene, James has played with almost everybody, most notable, the great Franny Eubank. Together, they set the stage alight with a varied mix of classic Blues songs.
Mat’s latest single is ‘Box Room Blues’:
RICK SIMPSON
Rick Simpson is based in London playing a wide variety of music, and leads his own group playing original jazz music. Rick is a regular performer at Ronnie Scotts, the 606 Jazz Club, Pizza Express Dean Street, The Vortex, The Bull’s Head, and he has appeared at larger UK venues such as the Royal Festival Hall and the Purcell Room.
Rick’s impeccable technique and restless imagination have earned him a place at the forefront of contemporary UK music. He’s equally at home exploring the tradition or pushing fearlessly against the boundaries, and now his unique creative voice is back in the spotlight with a typically idiosyncratic project: a re-framing of Radiohead’s ‘Kid A ‘album, featuring ten original arrangements of the source material played by an all-star band of like-minded musical mavericks.
J FRISCO
J Frisco are an award-winning avant-garde jazz/punk trio featuring soprano saxophone, electric guitar, keyboards and vocals; they create improvised genre-fluid soundscapes and noise drawn from emotion, political, and gender issues. With influences including Roller Trio, Portico Quartet, The Guest Stars, Matthew Bourne, Pauline Oliveros, John Surman, and Massive Attack, they thrive on challenging both their own and their audiences perceptions of sound.
Their latest album, ‘Cut Throat’, was released in December 2020. The trio had been working on the album since the beginning of 2019, and then recorded in an Ilkley studio (next to waterfall!).
This album comprises a maturity in sound, playing with not only J Frisco’s feminist angst, but humour, a beautiful sadness and acceptance. Exploring themes of abuse, purity, nostalgia, and sexism, J Frisco have created a diverse album filled with innovative sound.

Their album, ‘Northern Perspective’, is the culmination of the Trio’s playing together so far. Cornish born and Manchester based, Ned Foulsham creates beats that border the realms of ambient jazz and hip hop. While still unsure of his style, he looks to move seamlessly through genres taking inspiration from D’Angelo to Jónsi. Ned Foulsham has worked with artists such as Harrison Perkins from ENKI Quartet and SD Gloria.
Ned’s debut track, ‘Across Gluvian’, was written a year ago and released in 2021. Based on a small Cornish hill, Harrison Perkins improvises over a slowly evolving beat allowing for images of a setting sun on a warm Cornish evening. Listening to the track is a delight and makes us incredibly excited to hear what this up and coming musician comes up with next. Give Ned a follow so you don’t miss anything…
Dooby
Dooby, AKA Patrick Higgins, is a rapper from New Jersey USA whose latest album ‘Doobious’ was released in March 2021. We hand over to Dooby for some words about himself and his music.
I was born with a form of muscular dystrophy called SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy). I had a pretty normal childhood aside from a few illnesses and being in a wheelchair. Somewhere around 12 I had my first bout with depression. I went from that, straight to 2 life-threatening illnesses. The only things I had at that point were my family, a few friends, and music. After I recovered, I realised that I needed to do something more with my life. I went to college at Rutgers University intending to attend law school after. I dropped out with a year left, and told my mom I felt like I was put on this earth to make good music with a message that hasn't really been spread in music yet. Growing up, I never saw a celebrity with any kind of physical disability so I didn't feel like I could accomplish my dream of making music, so I quit and just wrote as therapy. Finally, like many other artists, I realised music was not only the only thing that made me happy, but it's also one of the only things I'm good at. So, I dropped out of school, bought a mic, watched a few YouTube videos on how to mix and do sound engineering, and I told the story of my life.
The project is called Doobious, which is both a play on words and a nod to my first mixtape I made where I rapped under the name "Wheelz" haha I've come a long way since then. On this project, I take the listener thru my growth from a sick, scared, insecure boy, to a proud yet humble man who is chasing his dreams no matter the cost. I also discuss my experiences with disease from hating myself and my body, to losing my little brother to disease and feeling survivors guilt, to not feeling accepted by others with disabilities and realizing that I'm the only me in existence and I should focus more on accepting myself. I wrap up the project on a more celebratory note, attempting to make the listener feel the same joy and triumph I feel venturing into this new phase of my life.

Meduulla
MEDUULLA is a 21-year-old Zimbabwean-born conscious rapper raised in Manchester inspired by artists ranging from Erykah Badu, Little Simz, Noname, Jhus, Frank Ocean, Dave, Chance the Rapper and IAMDDB.
We first met Meduulla, accompanied by Rory A. Green and Jamie Walton, during Love Music Hate Racism’s 2021 The #BeautifulResistance campaign, when we were lucky enough to get a sneak preview of her latest track. We love everything about Meduulla’s style and look forward to seeing her back on the M&P stage one day.
At the age of 13, she began writing poetry, which developed into her music career. After her first freestyle to ‘Eskimo Riddim’ received recognition from the Godfather of Grime, Wiley, she collaborated with musician, Nia Archives to create the single 'Worldly Eyez' in 2018 to an MF DOOM instrumental. This fuelled the release of her solo remix to Mancunian rapper Aitch’s song, 'Taste' in 2019, where she showcased her multilingual abilities.
Meduulla’s latest single ‘Refill’ has just been released, in March 2021. The song is a chilled party vibe that captures the importance of having the right people around you, whether it's for a good time, or to talk strategies to build. 'Refill' shows what a chilled get-together with Meduulla is like. To embody this, the northern phrase "It's abit of me" meaning something you enjoy doing or that represents you is repeated throughout the chorus.
This coming year she hopes to further showcase her multifaceted nature and delve further into her sound as a musician. Freestyles and more creative content by Meduulla can be found on her instagram: @Meduulla.
ALEX LUKE
ALEX LUKE is a soulful singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer from Manchester, UK. Influenced by Soul, Blues, Jazz and Pop, with sounds similar to the likes of Hozier, Michael Kiwanuka and Joy Crookes. After Alex’s brother passed in 2015, he turned to his music for solace and took his brothers middle name ‘LUKE’, a means of keeping his memory alive.
Alex's latest single ‘HIDEAWAY', portrays his development as an artist, while giving a hint at the future direction of his music. From its unquestionable captivating hooks, deep resonating authenticity, and Pop Blues stylings, there’s no doubt he will be on the rise in 2021.“HIDEAWAY is about when you’ve first met someone in relationship and you can’t stop thinking about them. It’s like they’ve left this mark on you thats with you wherever you go...theres this exciting emotion, mixed with an element of self doubt, in that you don’t know if these feelings will be reciprocated”
We love everything about Alex’s musical repertoire and its pure reflection of its roots and inspirations. ‘Hideaway’ in particular demonstrates how multiple elements and styles can be masterfully brought together to make a hugely listenable and enjoyable piece of music. The track starts with Alex’s powerful vocals, instantly captivating the listener to be taken on a journey through a multi-instrumental composition proving Alex’s true appreciation of the genres from which he takes influence to create such a well-defined sound. This is truly one of those tracks you’ll happily listen to multiple times in a row.
Ben Haskins
This Spring, Leeds-based jazz guitarist Ben Haskins and his quartet release their second offering 2020/ Laid Up on HPBC Records. Recorded in the depths of a global pandemic, the two tracks showcase the maturity, tenacity and interplay of this now seasoned group.
The quartet, which features members of Wandering Monster, Slow Lorris, Jasmine and K.O.G & The Zongo Brigade came together through jam nights, mutual projects and a love for improvised music. After a successful first gig at Hyde Park Book Club in 2019, the group has regularly gigged across the North, leading to their first release, Candescence. Exploring open, melodic compositions and expansive improvisations, the guitar and tenor sax led quartet draws influence from jazz scenes on both sides of the Atlantic, taking inspiration from John Coltrane, Shabaka Hutchings, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Guiliana, and Bill Frisell.
Like so many compositions from the post-lockdown generation of artists, ‘Twenty Twenty’ has been born out of the dichotomy of hope and frustration felt by people world-wide. In a time where musicians have been deprived of their livelihood and soul food, writing music and honing a craft is all that is left. Both the composition and improvisation reflect a time when resilience is found amidst despair.
‘Laid Up’ draws inspiration from the contemporary canon of jazz. Pushing the dynamic and sonic capabilities of the guitar quartet, the music doffs a hat to The John Coltrane Quartet and the music of Kurt Rosenwinkel, whilst exploring a driving 5/4 groove with propulsive energy.
Nicky Phillips
Singer-songwriter Nicky Phillips released her new single ‘Echo’ in April 2021. After over a decade of songwriting and performing, this is the first official release by the indie-folk-pop artist and marks the start of her recording career.
Born and bred in London, Nicky Phillips felt the pull to move north, writing and sharing her open-hearted songs through intimate performances across North West England. Nicky has spent many years performing live, but 2020 had other plans. As a result, Nicky started sharing her music on Instagram and soon after connected with producer Joel Schwartz. The two were quick to start working together on the recording of ‘Echo’, which progressed to recording an EP. The EP, due to be released in summer 2021, is about the ups & downs of holding on to and letting go of love.
Nicky has performed at prestigious venues in London, such as the Southbank Centre, The Troubadour and The Bedford. In the North, Nicky has performed at Night & Day Café, The Whiskey Jar and The Salty Dog, to name a few. Nicky hopes to make her return to performing live at venues across Cheshire and Manchester soon, but until then you can catch her performing on Instagram Live on Friday nights.
'Echo' is about the temptations that come along in a relationship, and how easy it is to get carried away with the idea of something new, and to take what you have for granted. The spark of the possible and a break from the ordinary – the grass often seems greener on the other side.
This single marks the start of Nicky’s recording journey, and what an unusual start it has been. The shared turbulence of the pandemic that has shook all of our lives, but also providing the opportunity to collaborate with someone on the other side of the ocean. Nicky and Joel have worked together remotely to capture not only the vulnerability in the song, but also the power behind the conflicting emotions.
RaellE
Raelle grew up in southeast London, where she and her sisters frequently felt isolated and singled out as the only Black family in their neighbourhood. They took solace in making music together. At home, she was surrounded by Motown classics, played the piano, and trained as a classical singer. Hearing Amy Winehouse’s album ‘Frank’ as an adolescent sparked a creative awakening, and she became captivated with jazz and soul’s freedom of expression and emotiveness.
Finding vibes between poetry and melody drive her songwriting process for lyrics and instrumentals to play off each other to tell a story. Raelle finds singing, particularly soul, a natural way of sharing with others. In a supposedly connected world based on superficial images, soul enables deeper emotional bonding between people with common experiences, and creates a bridge to share those experiences with people from different backgrounds in the musical spirit of Roy Ayers, Etta James, and Nina Simone.
Raelle’s latest track, ‘Purple Skies’, is available to stream now. Bossa Nova and Neo-Soul influences layer Carter Sanders R&B beat, setting the scene for the tracks message. Purple Skies is about coming to terms with the uncertainty of life, finding peace, self-realisation and clarity. A chapter of freedom and self-realisation after losing something or someone you loved, which did not love you the same.
When speaking about Purple Skies Raelle says, “In between the certainty of the blue skies and the radiance of the sunset, there lies in between this a sky that is a kaleidoscope of purple clouds. These purples skies never seem to stay and can change at an instant although unstable and uncertain, they are remarkably beautiful and a sense of fearful peace washes over me every time I see them. There is so much beauty in uncertainty. I see this in my own life. In 2020 my life was turned upside down, in terms of love, family, job security and the fear of waking up to find out the pandemic took someone I knew. The uncertainty filled me every day. At first it was hard, and I couldn’t cope with not knowing what my life would look like the following day, but then I started to realise how much of an important time in my life the uncertain periods were. They taught me to cherish those I love, how to be strong and how to be brave, you have to fall to realise where you were going wrong. Although this was painful at the time, coming back from those situations that taught me the most. So this song is about embracing the uncertain times, seeing them as lessons and understanding how much you can grow as a person from them”.

Radikal Queen
Afidi Nomo, aka Radikal Queen, is Tyneside’s premier Black spoken word artist and musician.
Early in her development as an artist, she was selected to teach poetry and music at the world renowned Heart of the Beast Puppet Theatre in Minneapolis, which was a key professional milestone preceding multiple further developments and achievements. Afidi is also a founding member of an ensemble of Northeast musicians called Collective Identity, which has supported bands like The Resonators and Misty in Roots.
In 2019, Afidi supported Benhamin Zaphaniah on his tour at the Sage, where she launched her first EP: ‘I Just Detangled My Afro, Pt.1’, before she was featured on the BBC Emerging Artist list. Then, in 2020, Afidi supported Blues legend SugarRay Rayford and HipHop legend Homebody Sandman in Newcastle, anm set to tour extensively for the rest of the year before the pandemic hit.
’I Just Detangled My Afro, Pt.1’ features two tracks: ‘Colonial Lies’, which has a reggae vibe, and explores themes of global disenfranchisement, the oppression of the youth, governmental hegemony, and environmental destruction. ‘Romance & Safe Sex’ examines concepts of consent, sexual autonomy and femme empowerment, set to a bawdy, burlesque, bluesy bass beat.
Ebony Grace
Ebony Grace writes melodic prog-pop that spans across a range of references including Aurora, Tori Amos, Steven Wilson and Muse. Having been involved with various collaborative projects in the past, Ebony used 2020 to learn music production and start releasing fully independent solo work. Although perhaps imperfect at this stage, Ebony is prolific and using music streaming platforms as a way to share the results of her 10,000 hours.
Tongue Tied is on the softer side of Ebony’s music. Featured as BBC Cumbria’s track of the week, this piano driven Bond-esque tune speaks of words never spoken and self-deception. Weaving together sonic textures and gymnastic vocal melodies this song is a world of its own that you can lend yourself to for several stolen minutes.
Courteous Thief
Described as both contemporary new folk and acoustic indie pop, Courteous Thief (aka Gary Roberts) has been a regular on the live circuit, supporting bands and artists such as Turin Brakes, Chris Helm, Catfish And The Bottlemen, Mark Morris (The Bluetones) and Tom Hingley (Inspiral Carpets) as well as festival appearances with performances at some of the UK's top venues and festivals.
Having performed at many Early-Evenings gigs at Matt & Phred’s, and having never failed to mesmerise the entire audience, it’s wonderful to be able to listen to Courteous Thief’s albums and feel the same way about the music as one does live. Courteous Thief’s music is undeniably full of purely soulful vocals, captivating storytelling, and beautifully complementary guitar and piano compositions alongside. All coming together to create a collection of music which makes it hard to just listen to one track and not the whole album.
“Melodiously mesmerizing, harmoniously vibrant and warmly atmospheric folk-pop finery” (Nessi Hault, Carpe Carmina)
Courteous Thief’s latest album, ‘Acoustic Sessions’, is out now.

Eloá Gonçalves trio
In collaboration with Luis Oliveira (drums, Brazil) and Tobias Steinrück (bass, Austria), the trio led by the Brazilian pianist / composer Eloá Gonçalves present a blend of sonorities that walks between the freedom of jazz, some references in classical music and Brazilian music.
The trio released its debut album Casa, under the Austrian label Alessa Records, supported by the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and city of Graz - Austria. In September 2020 the trio have been chosen as finalists of Central European Jazz Showcase, taking place in June 2021, in Czech Republic.
“The strong connection to classical music is quite surprising, since you have Bossa and Latin Jazz in mind with a Brazilian musician. "Nostalgia" also moves in a similar musical waters as "Graz". One thinks to be closer to the music of the north, represented by Grieg and Sibelius, than to the easy melodic setting of romanticism and neo-romanticism.” - Jazz’halo Magazin, Belgium
Dirty Blues
Suzanne Noble (vocals) and George Webster (piano) perform 'Dirty Blues' and jazz from the 1920s-1940s, an era when lewd songs ruled the jukeboxes with titles such as 'If It Don't Fit, Don't Force It' and 'Sam the Hot Dog Man.'
The songs were first performed in speakeasies, brothels and vaudeville theatres by luminaries such as Bessie Smith, Alberta Hunter and Ethel Waters, and less famous singers such as Lil Johnson and Julie Lee Boyfriends. Cheeky and fun, with more than a hint of sexual innuendo, Suzanne and George are the perfect accompaniment to a mint julep or bootleg/craft gin in a cosy bar.
The Dirty Blues YouTube channel is definitely worth checking out to get an idea of what this duo is all about. We had great fun listening to the different tracks, and very much felt like we had travelled back to a 1920’s Speakeasy!
