Introducing a brand new Jam Night at Matt & Phred’s. VOX Jam; the jam session all about vocalists, singers, and MC’s.
Led by Joe Luckin, some of Manchester’s most highly acclaimed musicians are the house band any singer would be delighted to have behind them. With a particular focus on R’n’B, Neo-Soul, Jazz, and Gospel, the band passes the microphone to those individuals who have singing or MC’ing simply in their blood.
Put your usual backing track of a pair of headphones away as tonight you have a top class house band there to jam your favourite track, with you under the spotlight. You don’t even have to have a particular song in mind, just give the band an idea of the vibe and see where the beat takes you. The house band will remain on stage for the entirety of the evening, meaning that all singers and vocalists have the opportunity to join them and perform.
Reminiscent of the infamous after-dark downtown NYC jam nights, this is a unique opportunity in Manchester where vocalists are the centre of attention. In the audience you can expect to have some special guests of the band to be invited on stage, some familiar faces from the MCR music scene, and of course a very supportive audience. Who knows, by the end of the night you may have even formed a band…
Listeners of Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Anderson .Paak, Omar, India.Arie, D’Angelo…: this is the night for you. Kick back with a smile on your face while listening to a classic track you had forgotten how much you loved, or listening to a track that neither you nor anyone else has heard before…

MORE ABOUT THE LINE UP
THE KTNA
The KTNA wear their heart on their sleave and channel an unapologetically strong, northern spirit into their craft. Twin sisters born in Kenya, raised and now residing in Manchester, Hope and Millie Katana weave their candid lyrics around unique productions to create music which demands to be noticed.
At 24 they have already achieved more than most, beginning their singing career on CBBC show Clash before catching the attention of TV executives who were quick to cast them in the long running BBC drama, Waterloo Road. However, it was always songwriting that burned the brightest and after some setbacks The KTNA were formed. Their debut EP Life Under Siege, kickstarted their musical project in March 2019, going on to receive support from the likes of Clash, The Fader, tmrw Mag, and BBC 1xtra. Brimming with raw honesty about past trauma whilst also looking optimistically ahead, the project resonated the greatest over the Covid-19 lockdown, as fans sought solace in the themes the EP explored. The KTNA explained, “during this pandemic lots of people have lost their jobs, their freedoms, and sometimes their sanity. Life Under Siege has helped people through this pandemic by making people feel seen, heard, and understood. It has been an outlet for so many to cry too. Sometimes that’s all you need…”
Resurgence, The KTNA’s follow up EP (out 22nd September 2021), marks the return of the duo with a new, lighter sound that is both self-written and self-produced. “Resurgence has given us a new lease of life, it’s the start of a new KTNA era.. it’s our first evolution. Although we’re still essentially the same sisters of darkness, we wanted to show the world a more upbeat side of us, a new side, dare we say...a grown woman sultry side!”. Their first single from the project, ‘Can’t Stop It’, rings true to this new approach with a hard-hitting beat and soulful topline sung with their unmistakable Mancunian twang.

The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.
The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.
NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.
Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

Feel like you’ve been thrown back to Prohibition times as you walk into our dimly lit jazz club to be greeted by one of the finest Harlem Swing bands out there. 52 Skidoo are a firm favourite at M&P’s, each of its members having earned a stellar reputation among audiences and fellow musicians alike.
Bringing back to life the forgotten era of the Speakeasy, Prohibition, Vaudeville, Tin Pan Alley, New York rent parties, Harlem Stride Piano and Hot Jazz 1920's band 52 Skidoo are an unlikely collection of drunks, gamblers, misfits and outlaws performing Harlem Swing, a music born out of the stride piano style made famous by James P. Johnson and Fats Waller.
Turning back the clock to play a dazzling set of vintage American music in the style for which it was written. Classic favourites like ‘Ain’t Misbehavin‘, ‘The Joint is Jumpin’ and ‘Your Feet’s Too Big'. You can also expect some popular favourites given the 52 Skidoo treatment.
Get your glad rags on and join us for an evening to be spent as Saturdays should be!

With Henry’s hugely diverse musical ability being clear, it’s fair to say that his solo performances are something truly special.
Henry has a huge passion for and appreciation of New Orleans piano, which draws from a wide range of influences including Blues, Jazz, Funk, R&B, Rhumba, Ragtime and even Classical music and Rock, all epitomized by the recognised master of the genre, James Booker. Audiences will not only enjoy Henry’s playing, but also his both witty and interesting introductions to both the style at large and the songs he will play.
This is the music of and inspired by Dr John, Professor Longhair, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, James P. Johnson, Willie ‘The Lion’ Smith, Luckey Roberts and Dick Wellstood. Now that’s a pretty impressive selection.
Having his musical roots in traditional New Orleans music certainly doesn’t stop Henry being a pioneer of bringing this distinct style into the modern age, you can expect some surprises from Henry along the way, from Prince, to The Beatles, to The Prodigy and beyond, all remaining true to the New Orleans style.

Manchester born blues legend Victor Brox is probably one of the most underrated champions of the British Blues scene and its unsung hero. This may well have been because he has refused to be pigeon-holed into any single category and has produced an eclectic style which often defied analysis.
What cannot be disputed is his excellent singing voice, musical virtuosity and total eccentricity. He was described by Jimi Hendrix and Tina Turner as their favourite white blues singer. He is without doubt a national treasure.

Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.
Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to perform an improvised piece, a Jazz standard, or even a Jazzy twist on a pop tune, accompanied by a stellar line up and in front of a full audience. Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.
Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Who knows who might make an appearance tonight…

We are delighted to welcome Ayanam to Matt & Phred’s for his debut club early-evening gig!
Ayanam is a Nigerian singer but considers his "musical home" to be Manchester. He grew up in Nigeria but moved to the UK at the age of 16 and it's reflected in his musical style - taking inspiration from everyone from the Nsync to Outlandish to Paolo Nutini, and the Kooks - his musical taste is definitely "eclectic", but what he enjoys doing is taking songs from every genre and playing around with their conventions, turning the most bubble gum of pop songs into neo soul musings.
A lyricist at heart, having written poetry since 16, his raspy tone may remind you of passionate crooners like Rob Thomas and Paolo Nutini. Although most of his sets are covers. His original songs explore his struggles with anxiety as he finds it therapeutic.
In 2019, Ayanam was a member of Sir Tom Jones' team on The Voice UK getting as far as the knockouts. We think you’ll agree that this gig is set to be something very special indeed!

Vintage reprobates and genre alchemists, the Black Sheikhs fire heady concoctions of Punk, Pop, Rock and Swing, steaming into the 21st century.

We are very excited to be welcoming the Eddy Smith & The 507 Trio to M&P’s for their debut club gig. Let’s show them some love!
Captivating audiences with his uniquely husky voice and tasteful piano accompaniment, Eddy Smith has been making his mark on the UK’s growing Americana scene. With his soulful melodies and infectious song writing, the singer’s stylistic delivery has been compared to the likes of Joe Cocker, JJ Grey and Marcus King to name a few.
Engulfed by rich vocal harmonies, soulful organs and bluesy harmonicas, the band's direction is reminiscent of a sound from way before their time. With an irresistible blend of various Americana styles, such as Blues, Folk, Country and Rock, they take a leaf from the books of Nathaniel Rateliff, The Band, The Eagles and countless other pioneers of their Genres.
Stripped down and (almost) acoustic, tonight three fifths of The 507 will be performing raw renditions of their songs, old and new.
