When the band was reviewed in popular Liverpool magazine Bido Lito!, they were summarised as "like consuming enticing baked goods that transpire to be mind-altering edibles, it at first tastes a bit strange, but you can't help but keep eating". They were also described as "an earthquake" by Frank Griffith on his Liverpool Community Radio show 'The Jazz Hour'.

The band has played in many prestigious venues around the city including The Jacaranda, The Kazimier, District and Frederiks, as well as up-and-coming powerhouse Future Yard. They also played a sold-out show at Heebie Jeebies for their debut EP launch. The band participated in an online music festival during the pandemic, and is currently streaming their first EP titled 'The Dance Side of the Dark' on all major music sites.

Whether you're a jazz fan, metalhead or techno lover, Sweet Beans' music and electrifying live presence has proven time and again to get any crowd going wild.

Ayanam - Free Early Gig

Saturday 23rd September 2023
Doors: 5pm
Happy Hour: 5-6:30pm
Gig: 5:30-6:30pm
Free Entry

We don’t take advance table bookings M&P’s Early-Evening Gigs, just make sure you get down early to bagsy the best seats in the house!

Ayanam is a Nigerian singer but considers his "musical home" to be Manchester. He grew up in Nigeria but moved to the UK at the age of 16 and it's reflected in his musical style - taking inspiration from everyone from the Nsync to Outlandish to Paolo Nutini, and the Kooks - his musical taste is definitely "eclectic", but what he enjoys doing is taking songs from every genre and playing around with their conventions, turning the most bubble gum of pop songs into neo soul musings.

A lyricist at heart, having written poetry since 16, his raspy tone may remind you of passionate crooners like Rob Thomas and Paolo Nutini. Although most of his sets are covers. His original songs explore his struggles with anxiety as he finds it therapeutic.

In 2019, Ayanam was a member of Sir Tom Jones' team on The Voice UK getting as far as the knockouts. We think you’ll agree that this gig is set to be something very special indeed!

The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.

The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.

NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.

Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

Legendary Manchester bassist Grant Russell brings together a group of the most dynamic and fierce musicians on the scene. With a wealth of experience and unrivalled energy this is gonna be intense!

Tonight, the band is joined by an extra special guest: the one and only Angie King on vocals. We’re very excited to be hosting Angie on our stage; this singer is undoubtedly one of the greats in the Manchester music scene.

You can expect the band’s masterful take on some classic Jazz tunes from throughout the decades, celebrated in Grant’s most recent album. Think Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans… To name but a few.

These musicians truly are masters of the music scene here in Manchester and beyond, all with fantastic reputations both as performers and show people. Not only will tonight be a journey through their excellent repertoire and ability, but you can also expect some top-tier banter in between tunes.

Simply the best kind of Wednesday.

Note: There will not be a horn player in this line up. This video is to give you an idea of the band’s sound.

Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.

Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to perform an improvised piece, a Jazz standard, or even a Jazzy twist on a pop tune, accompanied by a stellar line up and in front of a full audience.

Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.

Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Who knows who might make an appearance tonight…

We are thrilled that this absolute powerhouse of a band is finally back at M&P’s. The last time they played was October last year… And it was a massive night. Let’s make tonight another one. Bring your dancing shoes!

The Nick Dewhurst Band plays a unique and hugely upbeat mix of Soul, Funk and Pop. Featuring a group of musical friends who all met through the Birmingham Conservatoire and West Midlands jazz scene, you can expect to hear a mixture of the band’s spin on pop tunes from the 80’s through to today.

These musicians are highly trained and massively experienced at what they do, across multiple genres, so having them turn their hands at some popular tunes is truly something amazing.

Expect this horn-heavy band (also featuring keys, bass, drums, and even some vocals) to be playing some great arrangements of big pop tunes by artists such as Basement Jaxx, Moloko, Pink, Stevie Wonder, and lots more! There’s something for everyone.

The band will jam the night away with players of any standard, staying true to what Blues is all about. This is the music of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Little Walter, Leadbelly, Aretha Franklin, and all those greats who defined Blues properly since the early 20th Century.

Oh, and don’t be surprised if Franny asks you to join in on a song mid-way through it!

Matt & Phred’s host for the third time Tango Jazz Quartet, a wonderful and creative collision of Argentinian Tango and Jazz roots.

With 10 albums released & 26 international tours made, including 6 consecutive years in UK, the band performed in the most prestigious jazz clubs and festivals in Europe, USA, China, Russia, South America and Africa.

“Synphonic Piazzolla” was his last project, premiered in 2021 together with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Nis Serbia and a version for chamber orchestra was presented on its 2022 tour together with the Belgrade Chamber Youth Orchestra at the Guarnerius Institut in Belgrade, Serbia.

This year the group returns to Matt & Phred’s  with a new repertoire that - that in addition to the work of Astor Piazzolla- explores a good part of traditional tango, especially the work of the great legend of Tango, the great singer and composer Carlos Gardel.

This showcase is a unique musical fusion of Tango and Jazz,  a fascinating journey from the origins of traditional Tango to the innovative proposals of Astor Piazzolla's music.

Tango Jazz Quartet magically captures the harmonies and the improvisation of jazz to blend them with the melodies and rhythms of tango. The striking contrast between the vibrant and playful "milongas", the romantic "tango-waltzes" and the electrifying music of Piazzzola will not leave anyone in the audience indifferent.

Line Up:
Martín Rao de Vita, on bass
Santiago Villalba, on piano
Ezequiel Vargas, on drums
Gustavo Firmenich, on tenor sax and clarinet
