An intimate evening celebrating the timeless music of Billie Holiday, with the Ellen Beth-Abdi band!

Vocalist Ellen Beth-Abdi leads a superb quartet featuring Bim Williams (guitar), Andy Patterson (double bass) and Ruben Sheridan (drums), performing both Holiday’s most evocative songs and some less-known treasures.

Expect moving interpretations of classics such as ‘God Bless the Child’, ‘Strange Fruit’, ‘Don’t Explain’, ‘All of Me’, ‘Summertime’, and ‘Lady Sings the Blues’. The band brings subtlety, swing, and soul to each tune, creating a night that honours Billie’s legacy without imitation. As well as the classic Holiday material, the band will explore jazz standards synonymous with her style.

Dan Burnett is a singer, songwriter, and freelance multi-instrumentalist musician based in the UK. With influences stemming from the soul, acoustic, and blues genres, Dan’s songs will take you on emotional journeys about life, love, and heartbreak.

Playing regularly throughout the year, Dan is also a library music composer for film and TV. He has co-written and recorded music which featured on ‘Stolen’ (Nicolas Cage), and ‘Supernatural’ (USA TV series), among many others. Since 2014, Dan has been an international endorser of Kawai Pianos.

Expect to hear Dan's favourites from his musical upbringing in Soul, Blues and Funk. On top of this, you’ll get to hear some of Dan’s absolutely mesmerising original material which we at M&P’s are in love with.

These popular Cabaret Club Nights are aimed at those wanting to enjoy the music and vibe reminiscent of the clubs they frequented over the decades gone by. Introducing our live act for the evening – Searchin’ are a 5-piece 60s Merseybeat tribute band who recreate the vibrant sounds of the Swinging Sixties era. Come and enjoy the sounds of the famous Beat groups from Liverpool and across the UK, classic hits from The Beatles, The Searchers, The Swinging Blue Jeans, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Manfred Mann, Spencer Davies group, CCR, Billy J Kramer and many others from that fabulous decade.

Searchin’ bring The Sixties back to life, taking the audience on a magical musical history tour, through one of the greatest musical decades of all time showcasing acts that have appeared at the famous Cavern Club in Liverpool. The band use original instruments from the period, including a Rickenbacker 325, Epiphone`s, and the famous Hofner Violin Beatle Bass, a five-piece Premier drum kit and use Fender amplification. They have performed their unique show all over the UK and they thrive to put on the very best performance to make sure the audience and themselves have a great night of live music.

Welcoming all musicians/singers to jam with the band - just chat to the band leader!

Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.

Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to come together with others to perform some classic Jazz, be it a 'standard' or something more modern, whilst showing the rest of the performers and audience your approach to improvisation. 

Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.

Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Who knows who might make an appearance tonight…

Good Grief is a four-piece instrumental group hailing from Manchester, consisting of Jerome on sax and flute, Jack on drums, Andrian on guitar, and Dan on bass.

Their live performances are known to be full of warmth and imagination, with each show being unique due to their blend of solid beats with improvisation.

The group was formed in 2016 and draws inspiration from a diverse range of artists such as Tom Misch, Thundercat, and Anderson .Paak, to name a few. Good Grief's music genre can be described as a fusion of neo-soul, jazz, and hip-hop, as they weave together hard-hitting beats with intricately woven guitar and sax textures.

After years of honing their craft, Good Grief is gearing up for a big year of gigs in 2023. Their sound has been likened to other popular instrumental groups such as Nubiyan Twist, Ezra Collective, and BadBadNotGood. Their performances have a unique feel every time, offering the audience a one-of-a-kind experience. With their infectious beats and creative flair, Good Grief is a band to watch out for in the instrumental music scene.

Meet Bossa Dos Patos: a Manchester-based band inspired by the rich and vibrant sounds of Brazilian music from the 60s. The band’s repertoire celebrates timeless classics from legends like Tom Jobim, João Gilberto, Jacob do Bandolim, Stan Getz and many more.

From the smooth, laid-back grooves of bossa nova to the infectious beats of samba and the intricate charm of choro, the music is all about creating a feel-good atmosphere. This excellent band brings people together through the warmth and soul of Brazil’s most iconic sounds.

The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.

The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.

NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.

Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

Full-blooded blues and boogie at its best. A thrilling, energetic and original journey into the genre from a passionate and experienced band. Expect dancing!

Heartfelt and sometimes fierce, The Out and Out Blues Band (The Out and Outs) are exactly as advertised – they explore the Blues from Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, through BB King, Bobby Bland and Taj Mahal, to Rory Gallagher – interspersed with their own original contemporary blues compositions.

Nova is a singer/songwriter born and raised right here in Manchester. After having started out training as a classical Soprano for 10 years, during her year abroad to study music in Perugia, Italy, she fell in love with Jazz and the world around it.

Nova’s unique and mesmerising tone, born out of her classical training, adds a distinct flavour to each of the classics she brings into her impressive and ever-growing repertoire.

Making it feel like it’s the weekend again already, the All Star Jam is sure to get each and every one in the club moving. Every 4th Monday of the month, House band Dreamer take to the stage to invite musicians to join them in filling M&P’s with the very best Funk, Soul, and Disco from across the decades.

Dreamer are a hugely talented collection of Manchester-based musicians who have earned a fantastic reputation on the live music scene by their own right. This is an opportunity for all musicians to come along and get on the stage to join Dreamer in getting the party started.

The All Star Jam is the night you want to be at if you love the all-time classics of the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. We encourage all musicians, singers, and MC’s to come along and give performing in front of the M&P audience a go. Whether there’s a particular musician you just love to sing the music of, or if there’s a bass line that you’ve finally mastered and now want to give it a go with a full band, or whatever else takes your fancy on the night, instrument in hand… Anything goes! Welcoming all musicians/singers to jam with the band - just chat to the band leader!

Led by Craig Hanson, some of the finest musicians on Manchester’s music scene are tonight’s house band. These fantastic individuals have come together through their love of creating innovative original music, and celebrating the forerunners from throughout history who harnessed their talent and musical conceptualisation to develop groundbreaking approaches to making music. Today, these artists are high-ranking inspiration for countless up-and-coming musicians, but the attitude held by those legends continues to pulse through the music scene.

It is this focus on the creation of music, in its most wonderful and broad approaches, which defines the Melody Makers Jam. This is a unique opportunity to get involved with like-minded creatives. Maybe you’ve got a particular tune in mind; or think that one classic would sound great arranged a different way; perhaps, even, you and a mate have been working on a track together but would love to hear what it sounds like on brass… The options couldn’t be more open, and you couldn’t hope for a higher calibre house band and more supportive audience to get things going.

When we spoke to Craig about hosting this Jam Night, he advocated a Jam based on music from the worlds of modern alternative pop, jazz, R&B, hip-hop, soul and great songwriting. Think artists ranging from Joni Mitchell to Jill Scott, Bjork to Beyonce, Kate Bush to Kendrick Lamar… Sound like your cup of tea? Bring along your instruments and vocal cords, have a chat with Craig and the band, and lets make some music.

Meet Soulful Minds Music, a dynamic 4-piece ensemble from Manchester breaking musical boundaries with their soulful blend of Motown and Soul alongside their Gospel roots. Led by the captivating Manchester R&B vocalist Natasha, the band weaves together diverse influences into a harmonious journey.

Demetrius, the rhythmic heartbeat, drives the band with his infectious energy on drums whilst Miguel, adds sophistication with soulful/Rnb and Occasional Rock solos on the Guitar, and Roger, The bands MD and Keys player, masterfully binds the arrangements to make this band sound phenomenal and have your unique experience one to always remember.

Church raised musicians, SoulfulMinds bring an ultimate twist of gospel to their sound including POP HITS and POP Rock songs where there is an underlying Gospel sound which is why it sets this 4 piece band apart from other bands.

This multicultural quartet transcends borders, delivering performances that celebrate unity through music which includes carefully arranged Medleys of songs from the 80’s right up to the 00’s.  - This band will keep you dancing all night long! literally.

Born and raised in Dallas Texas, Andrew picked up the piano and started gigging at the age of 14. By 21, they were delighting audiences on several different cruise ships, before eventually settling down and relocating to Manchester. 

Combining a gravely low voice with raw foot-stomping Americana, you can expect an enthusiastic performance of American and British classics, as well as songs you never thought you'd hear on the keys. With interwoven mashups, oftentimes thought of spontaneously, prepare to let loose and hear an anarchic mix of songs in a dynamic anything-goes piano vocal performance.
