Our Mardi Gras Week celebrations continue at Matt & Phred’s as we welcome the fantastic saxophonist Alex Clarke and her stellar band to our little club! These guys never fail to put on an unmatched performance and tonight will be no exception!
Tonight, the Alex Clarke Quartet takes to the stage with a particular focus on all things New Orleans, celebrating all of those fantastic musicians who created such a unique and passionate genre! Think the music of Harry Connick Jr, Leroy Jones, Wynton Marsalis, and Louis Armstrong… to name but a few!
This fresh and exciting quartet have a vast range of experience in different styles of music and have come together to play their own mix of New Orleans street beat, swing & reggae.
As a finalist in the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2020, winner of the Rising Star category in the 2019 British Jazz Awards and nominee in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2021 & 2022, Alex is known to be one of the most in-demand and versatile young saxophonists to have emerged on the British jazz scene.
Praised for her extensive repertoire list and intelligent ear for harmony, she brings a youthful, intuitive approach which sounds authentic in a variety of musical settings from New Orleans to bebop. Alex's sound is steeped in the tradition of jazz; her deep respect for the heritage of the music can be heard in a swinging, melodic approach reminiscent of Scott Hamilton and Lester Young, with strong influences of Phil Woods and Cannonball Adderley.
