Every 1st Monday of the month sees our resident Blues band, fronted by the fantastic Franny Eubank, take to the stage for a night of music like no other.
The band will jam the night away with players of any standard, staying true to what Blues is all about. This is the music of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Little Walter, Leadbelly, Aretha Franklin, and all those greats who defined Blues properly since the early 20th Century.
Come equipped with your steel guitars, basses, mouth organs, sticks, vocal cords, or whatever other instrument you play, and join this mighty house band to either play one of the classics or see where the beat takes you… That’s the joy of the Blues. Oh, and don’t be surprised if Franny asks you to join in on a song mid-way through it!
More of a listener than a player? No problem. Kick back in our candle-lit club in the company of gritty lyricism, 12-bar riff-led tunes, and the all-round powerful performances that the M&P Blues Jam has to offer. This is one of those nights that you simply won’t want to end.

The Hybrid Sessions is a monthly jam at Matt & Phred’s, inspired by cutting-edge electronic artists like Floating Points, Maribou State, Thom Yorke, and Jojo Mayer. What sets The Hybrid Sessions apart is its unique fusion of live music with electronic production. Musicians and singers have the chance to deconstruct and reshape digital sounds in real-time, pushing boundaries and exploring new ways to create.
More of a listener than a player? No problem! Come along, kick back, and enjoy the night unfolding... The music you hear has never been heard before and never will again... Whether you're into jazz, drum and bass, or anything in between, this is your chance to experience -and be part of -the future of live music.
Hosted by artist and producer Laurie Agnew, these sessions are a creative playground for all musicians to take improvisation to a new dimension. The stage is open to instrumentalists and vocalists; get in touch with @the_hybrid_sessions to check what equipment is provided and what you need to bring along.
Each Hybrid Session is fronted by a special guest artist or gorup in the world of electronic music, to give the night even more of a unique and distinct flavour and direction.

Many have commented as to how Rowland Jones creates a conversation with the audience via his finely crafted melodic songs.
Iain Patience described him in Blues Matters (UK) as 'an experienced blues man, who knows exactly what to do with this music' Jones' music though clearly emerging from the blues shows a wide range of influences, and his songs have been favourably compared to John Martyn, Mose Allison and Jim Croce.
The Moveable Feast is a collection of Rowland's musical collaborators which has included C.J Hillman, Paul Burgess, Clive Mellor, and Mike Smith. The quartet this evening will be Rowland Jones on vocals & guitar, Liam Morson on keys, Bo Lee on bass, and Iain Mellor on percussion.

Leeds-based group Wandering Monster reaches beyond what may be expected from the tried and tested line-up of the tenor saxophone/guitar quintet. The band’s original compositions, penned by double bassist and leader Sam Quintana, draw from a love of American and European jazz, rock and world music, creating a sound that’s simultaneously raucous and sensitive, intense and intellectual.
Wandering Monster is made up of some of the finest musicians operating in the UK today; members of the band have also performed with a host of esteemed artists who include Mike Walker, Nikki Iles, Mark Nightingale, Lianne Carroll, Evelyn Glennie, Ant Law, Jasmine Myra, Melt Yourself Down and Worldservice Project amongst others.

The Villanelles are a queer-led, women-led function band from Manchester. Inspired by the vocal harmonies of The Andrews Sisters as well as Girlbands past and present, The Villanelles' play everything from intimate jazz lounges to high energy party tunes for weddings, events and festivals.
Tonight, expect a mix of jazz standards, 3-part harmony classics and post-modern covers of the band’s favourite pop songs.

Ed Kainyek is a prolific saxophonist based in Manchester, with a long and varied career in jazz and education, who has performed at countless venues and festivals around the world. Ed’s repertoire spans traditional jazz standards, contemporary jazz, and even relaxed ambient sets. Whether leading his own band, jamming with fellow musicians, or teaching the next generation, Ed Kainyek stands as a dedicated and skilled figure in Manchester’s jazz and live music community.
Today, Ed is joined by Trish Heenan (vocals), Al Scott (piano), John Sandham (bass) and Rick Weedon (drums). Expect two fantastic one-hour sets mixing vocal-led tunes and instrumentals, all guaranteed to leave you in awe of this mighty line up.

Helen Bytheway, front woman and pianist from 'The Retrosettes', 'The Horse Puppets' and 'The Bytheways' (all who play at M&Ps regularly) plays solo for the early acoustic set.
Helen is a music graduate with a specialism in song writing. She has played music at venues and festivals all over the world, with her voice often being described as a mix of Carly Simon, Carole King and Stevie Knicks, but with a real sound of her own.

As one of the UK’s leading original covers acts, the Gypsies of Bohemia Trio pride themselves on having written at least half of their complete catalogue of original cover versions. Something of a paradox? Well, that sums these guys up. This tight-knit trio of musically literate, well-groomed individuals can bring a party like no other, with their inventive and superbly crafted renditions of popular contemporary songs from the modern era.
Fronted by the phenomenal vocalist Martin Connor, and driven by Jim Wallace on guitar and Andrzej Baranek on piano, expect all your all-time guilty-pleasure bangers given the gypsy treatment… A mix of classic gypsy jazz and popular covers twisted into something unmistakably theirs.

Back Chat Brass bring a show that rivals all others. The 7-piece brass band, based in Leeds, have mastered a repertoire sure to raise the roof of our little backstreet jazz club. It sure has done on many an occasion before.
Rooted in pop, funk and hip hop, the band’s brassy beats are an instant favourite of any audience lucky enough to catch these guys live. Since 2016, they’ve been wreaking havoc in venues around the world, coaxing even the stubbornest of dance-phobics from their seats with their signature take on your go-to hits.

Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.
Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to come together with others to perform some classic Jazz, be it a 'standard' or something more modern, whilst showing the rest of the performers and audience your approach to improvisation.
Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.
Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Luso-British Portuguese artist Maya Blandy, whose debut ‘Stardust’ album was co-written and produced with Jake Wherry (founding member of The Herbaliser), brings her deeply soulful, jazz-inflected songwriting to life in her Trio — accompanied by piano and trumpet.
Since first collaborating in 2021, Maya and Wherry have crafted a fresh, distinctive sound rooted in influences like The Emotions, Sade, Donny Hathaway, and Erykah Badu. Their breakthrough single “Stardust” (featuring Kathy Brown) garnered support from BBC Radio 6, BBC Introducing, and airplay across the UK and Portugal. Joshua’s group is an amalgamation of musicians formed under the omni-genre outfit penned by the bassist. Considered an exceptional practitioner of his craft, Joshua channels a modern Mingus style, with support from a plethora of youthful talent and formidable arrangements.

Honey Bee Jazz is a collective of Jazz musicians from around the world that met in Manchester to study music, and created a session jazz band. Since then, the up and coming 4-piece band has gone from strength to strength, continually arranging songs to showcase around the MCR jazz scene.
For this extra special gig, HBJ will play popular jazz, in styles such as Swing, Ballad, and Bossa Nova, from the likes of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, as well as jazz rearrangements of music from pop genres from the 1980’s til the 2020’s… Yep, this band has it all.

Playing what they describe as ‘funky, poppy drum and brass’ and wearing their trademark flat caps, Flat Cap Brass’s broad repertoire spans from Bruno Mars to Chaka Khan and from Wheatus to S Club 7. They play in a wide variety of different styles but the one thing they promise is that all of our music is recreated in a bold brass sound.
Highlights for Flat Cap Brass include opening the main stage at Kendal Calling festival, getting one of Liverpool Sound City Festival’s biggest singalongs to ‘Angels’ by Robbie Williams, and representing the UK at the Haizetara street music festival near Bilbao. They’ve also performed for countless amazing weddings and a variety of corporate clients, including Welcome to Yorkshire, Meadowhall Shopping Centre, UA92 along with Cartmel, Beverley, York and Wetherby races.
Tonight, expect a selection of pop classics in a bold brass style – hits of the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and even present day as you’ve never heard them before!

The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.
The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.
NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.

The debut 2024 Pat Fulgoni Blues Experience album has received considerable acclaim, a no 3 in the UK blues airplay charts and a nomination in the UK Blues Awards. Already with European dates under their belts “Blues in Britain” writes ‘its a blues set to cherish… Pat and co just do them so well” Reviewing 2024’s Tenby Blues Festival, Blues Matters Mag said: “There then followed an entirely different style and set of full throttle funky electric blues led by Pat Fulgoni and his Blues Experience. With a full on five piece band Fulgoni’s powerful vocal delivery worked wonders as he pushed the boat out with a confidence that highlighted this band’s importance in the growing blues world in the UK.”
In his time Pat has sung across many genres and worked with festival headlining producers from Zion Train to Camo & Krooked, London Electricity to Murdock to Coldcut and a range of weird and wonderful sounds including with Jeff Buckley / Capt Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas (NYC) as well as touring the world as a live artist and as part of Huddersfield band Kava Kava. But it’s truly magical when he sings the blues especially when backed by the stunning musicianship of this band featuring talented musicians including Jacob Beckwith on guitar, Jaden Hart on bass, Charlie Isaac on keys and Dylan Sluiter on drums. Every 4th Monday of the month, House band Dreamer take to the stage to invite musicians to join them in filling M&P’s with the very best Funk, Soul, and Disco from across the decades.
Dreamer are a hugely talented collection of Manchester-based musicians who have earned a fantastic reputation on the live music scene by their own right. This is an opportunity for all musicians to come along and get on the stage to join Dreamer in getting the party started.
The All Star Jam is the night you want to be at if you love the all-time classics of the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. We encourage all musicians, singers, and MC’s to come along and give performing in front of the M&P audience a go. Jeremy Sassoon is one of the UK’s most in-demand singer pianists who has mesmerised audiences both in the UK and around the world with his beautifully soulful and natural style and gorgeous repertoire of his own arrangements of Jazz, Blues, Groove & Soul classics. On many an occasion, Jeremy’s early-evening gigs at Matt & Phred’s have seen audiences queuing far in advance of the gig in order to get a stage side table and be fully immersed in Jeremy’s beautiful performance.
Jeremy has headlined sell out shows at Ronnie Scotts, Pizza Express Soho, the Jazz Café, and multiple Edinburgh Festival shows. He has performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival, The Iridium Jazz Club in New York and has regularly headlined at Berlin’s premier Jazz Club A-Trane.

Alligator Gumbo are a 7 piece New Orleans jazz band from Leeds, who have been playing together since 2011. Having played extensively around the country, and often packed out Matt & Phred’s, we can’t wait to see them again.
A gig with Alligator Gumbo sees jazz from the hey-day of the New Orleans swing/jazz era, when music was raw and largely improvised with melodies and solos happening simultaneously which has now become defined as the 'New Orleans' sound.
As well as the band’s unique and fast-tempo treatment of the classic tunes, Alligator Gumbo take this distinctive style and apply it to their arrangements of more modern and popular songs which everyone will recognise and happily head to the dance floor upon hearing.

Dan Burnett is a singer, songwriter, and freelance multi-instrumentalist musician based in the UK. With influences stemming from the soul, acoustic, and blues genres, Dan’s songs will take you on emotional journeys about life, love, and heartbreak.
Playing regularly throughout the year, Dan is also a library music composer for film and TV. He has co-written and recorded music which featured on ‘Stolen’ (Nicolas Cage), and ‘Supernatural’ (USA TV series), among many others. Since 2014, Dan has been an international endorser of Kawai Pianos.
