Led by Craig Hanson (drums), some of the most exciting voices on Manchester’s music scene come together as the house band any singer would be delighted to have behind them.
The band passes the microphone to those individuals who have singing or MC’ing simply in their blood, focussing on modern Jazz and all of the wonderful genres surrounding and taking influence from it.
Put your usual backing track of a pair of headphones away as tonight you have a top class house band there to jam your favourite track, with you under the spotlight. You don’t even have to have a particular song in mind, just give the band an idea of the vibe and see where the beat takes you. The house band will remain on stage for the entirety of the evening, meaning that all singers and vocalists have the opportunity to join them and perform.
Reminiscent of the infamous after-dark downtown NYC jam nights, this is a unique opportunity in Manchester where vocalists are the centre of attention. In the audience you can expect to have some special guests of the band to be invited on stage, some familiar faces from the MCR music scene, and of course a very supportive audience. Who knows, by the end of the night you may have even formed a band…
Kick back with a smile on your face while listening to a classic track you had forgotten how much you loved, or listening to a track that neither you nor anyone else has heard before…
A little on VOX Jam leader, Craig Hanson:
Craig is an acclaimed musician on the Manchester scene. He performs and tours with many artists including 6x Grammy Nominated artist Yola. He was one half of spiritual funk jazz duo Skeltr, winning various awards and releasing two successful records. Craig is now working behind the scenes on his own brand new project (all to be revealed)…

Alligator Gumbo are a 7 piece New Orleans jazz band from Leeds, who have been playing together since 2011. Having played extensively around the country, and often packed out Matt & Phred’s, we can’t wait to see them again.
A gig with Alligator Gumbo sees jazz from the hey-day of the New Orleans swing/jazz era, when music was raw and largely improvised with melodies and solos happening simultaneously which has now become defined as the 'New Orleans' sound.
As well as the band’s unique and fast-tempo treatment of the classic tunes, Alligator Gumbo take this distinctive style and apply it to their arrangements of more modern and popular songs which everyone will recognise and happily head to the dance floor upon hearing.

Simone Manunza Trio’s Italian songs started for Simone as a project with a very light feeling and a desire to explore a mixed repertoire of beautiful songs, arias and film music, which has been the soundtrack of all Simone’s life. Having lived in the UK for 10 years, this process became both assuring and hugely nostalgic, with the musical result one that can be enjoyed by many appreciative audiences.
When Simone started transcribing the music and studying the songs, it soon became clear that these were real thoroughbred compositions. Worthy to be treated like real jazz standards, with strong melodies, able to connect with the audience in a special way and highly communicative.
Tonight, the trio will be playing some pop songs, internationally well known and some hidden gems, which may be less familiar for a UK audience. An Aria from Puccini's Boheme, E lucevan le stelle, some film music from Morricone and some of Simone’s own compositions.
Line Up:
Simone Manunza - Guitar & electronics
John Sandham - Bass
Neil McMinn - Drums

The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.
The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.
NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.
Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too!

Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.
Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to perform an improvised piece, a Jazz standard, or even a Jazzy twist on a pop tune, accompanied by a stellar line up and in front of a full audience.
Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.
Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Who knows who might make an appearance tonight…

The band will jam the night away with players of any standard, staying true to what Blues is all about. This is the music of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Little Walter, Leadbelly, Aretha Franklin, and all those greats who defined Blues properly since the early 20th Century.

Miss Magpie is a pseudonym for one of Manchester's most talented young female singers whose voice has often been compared to that of the late, great Amy Winehouse.
She will be singing songs which have been written especially for her and range in style, from jazz and blues, to soul, R & B, and even with a bit of hip-hop thrown in!
Songwriting influences include Burt Bacharach, Amy Winehouse, and even John Barry who wrote many of the James Bond themes. With an 8-piece band supporting her, giving it a big band sound, you are not going to be disappointed.
Magari (support):
6 piece Fusion band from Manchester, Magari were born out of Manchester Recording Studio, White Bear Studios when Producer David Page looked at putting a session band together which blossomed into life with original music seemingly writing itself.
2019 was a busy year for the band, gigging most weeks in and around Manchester but abruptly came to a halt early 2020 due to the pandemic. Magari now return to the scene after hiatus with a new lineup, and a new single ‘Buffering’ set for release in December.
Magari draw from influences from the voice of Amy, the funk and soul of Free Nationals, the moods of Alfa Mist and the progressions of Yes.
Magari will be playing all their original tracks collected from the past 5 years, a selection of Jazz, Funk and Soul.
