Welcoming all musicians/singers to jam with the band - just chat to the band leader!

Every 1st Monday of the month sees our resident Blues band, fronted by the fantastic Franny Eubank, take to the stage for a night of music like no other.

The band will jam the night away with players of any standard, staying true to what Blues is all about. This is the music of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Little Walter, Leadbelly, Aretha Franklin, and all those greats who defined Blues properly since the early 20th Century.

Come equipped with your steel guitars, basses, mouth organs, sticks, vocal cords, or whatever other instrument you play, and join this mighty house band to either play one of the classics or see where the beat takes you… That’s the joy of the Blues. Oh, and don’t be surprised if Franny asks you to join in on a song mid-way through it!

More of a listener than a player? No problem. Kick back in our candle-lit club in the company of gritty lyricism, 12-bar riff-led tunes, and the all-round powerful performances that the M&P Blues Jam has to offer. This is one of those nights that you simply won’t want to end.

The Hybrid Sessions is a monthly jam at Matt & Phred’s, inspired by cutting-edge electronic artists like Floating Points, Maribou State, Thom Yorke, and Jojo Mayer.

What sets The Hybrid Sessions apart is its unique fusion of live music with electronic production. Musicians and singers have the chance to deconstruct and reshape digital sounds in real-time, pushing boundaries and exploring new ways to create.

Whether you're into jazz, drum and bass, or anything in between, this is your chance to experience—and be part of—the future of live music.

Hosted by artist and producer Laurie Agnew, these sessions are a creative playground for all musicians to take improvisation to a new dimension. The stage is open to instrumentalists and vocalists, with amps, mics, keys, a hybrid drum kit, and Ableton Push provided. We ask that musicians who play other instruments (e.g. guitars, horns, etc.) to bring them along.

Despite the tech, The Hybrid Sessions are laid-back and open to all, with Laurie and friends on hand to guide you through the process. It's all about improvisation, experimentation, and connection.

Want to join tonight’s jam? DM @the_hybrid_sessions on Instagram to secure your spot! There are limited spaces available for walk-ins on the night.

With Mardi Gras Day falling on Tuesday 4th March 2025 this year, we felt it only right to mark this amazing time of year with something special; bringing the spirit of New Orleans to our little jazz club here in Manchester. So, for Mardi Gras Weekend, we lined up one of the finest brass bands we know, Hijack Horns. These guys are sure to make you feel like you’ve flown over the pond to experience some of the most gutsy, awe-inspiring brass playing out there… Whilst dancing the night away to some of the best pop songs ever…

Hijack Horns grabs a fist full of feel-good tunes, a handful of high-energy brass, throws it all in a blender and serves you the spiciest, brassyest smoothie your aural tastebuds can handle. Made up of players from long established street bands who are no strangers to the impromptu alfresco rave, this new band squashes the punch of a much bigger outfit into a slinky 5-piece.

Powered by their perennial appetite to bring the party to the people, the Hijack Horns philosophy is simple - life's too short to watch other people dance.

Hijack Horns uphold a strict "All Killer, No Filler" policy, with classics from Stevie Wonder, George Benson and Curtis Mayfield through to The Human League, Fatboy Slim and Outkast. Rest assured the guaranteed delivery of a floor-bouncing set that'll leave your ears ringing.

The songs emerge from another time, influenced by the classic songwriting and arranging of Bacharach and Hal David, accompanied by grooves akin to old school Stax and Motown.

This paired down piano solo gig will showcase this talented artist in an intimate setting.

My Generation, Manchester’s Coolest Cabaret Club Night, is back for 2025
celebrating 15 years of delivering great nights to their discerning guests. These
popular nights are aimed at those who frequented the northern club scene over the
decades gone by. A place where guests can experience the music and vibe
reminiscent of the club scene they experienced as teens.

Traditionally the sounds of the 60s, Soul, Motown and Northern Soul featured heavily
at club night, however in 2024 after hosting a 70s DISCO and an 80s rival party
we’ve decided to continue mixing it up, putting on nights that will appeal to an
exciting diverse audience. So, for our first club night of 2025 we’re hosting an Indie
Night – a night of Rock, Pop, Punk and Festival favourites.

Guests can continue to expect a warm welcome and a relaxed, safe and friendly
atmosphere. It’s not about how you look, dress up, dress down, it’s up to you. It’s all
about music, dancing and socialising.

Introducing our live act for the evening – Hilda's Flying Ducks are a group of lads
who love playing Indie covers music from the 70's, 80's, 90's and 00's. Expect to
hear tracks that you would have put on your turntable back in the day, and, many
that would appear any great playlist today.

The Ducks will get you dancing and singing along to the best banging tunes from
The Cure, The Smiths, The Clash, Pulp, Oasis, The Jam, Blondie, Green Day, Blur,
Blink 182, James, Artic Monkeys and many more!

The band, Rob - Lead vocal & rhythm guitar, Chris - Lead guitar & backing vocals,
Brads - Bass & backing vocals and last but not least Terry - Drums & backing vocals,
can’t wait to meet you – Let's rock the night away!

Welcoming all musicians/singers to jam with the band - just chat to the band leader!

Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.

Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to perform an improvised piece, a Jazz standard, or even a Jazzy twist on a pop tune, accompanied by a stellar line up and in front of a full audience.

Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.

Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Who knows who might make an appearance tonight…

Welcoming all musicians/singers to jam with the band - just chat to the band leader!

The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.

The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.

NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.

Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

PoVo is a northwest-based, five-piece that combines the jazz-funk fusion of the 1970s and 80s with an improvisational ethos derived from today’s latest sounds. The result is an irresistible electric groove that’s reminiscent of our musical roots - artists like Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, Grover Washington, and the Yellowjackets - but with a unique feel that remains new and fresh. Built on a solid bass and drum vibe, the band layers keyboards, guitar and sax to produce a sound that is as visceral as it is cerebral.

Tonight, the band are delighted to perform their take on some jazz classics for their debut performance at Matt & Phred's, as part of a Spring Tour of Northern venues. The latest additions to their set include the unmistakable work of the likes of Zappa and McCoy Tyner which sit nicely alongside our signature tune, "Povo" by Freddie Hubbard.

Paul Froggatt - sax
Tim Hickman - guitar
Andy Smith - drums
Dave Shooter - bass

Welcoming all musicians/singers to jam with the band - just chat to the band leader!

Led by Craig Hanson, some of the finest musicians on Manchester’s music scene are tonight’s house band. These fantastic individuals have come together through their love of creating innovative original music, and celebrating the forerunners from throughout history who harnessed their talent and musical conceptualisation to develop groundbreaking approaches to making music. Today, these artists are high-ranking inspiration for countless up-and-coming musicians, but the attitude held by those legends continues to pulse through the music scene.

It is this focus on the creation of music, in its most wonderful and broad approaches, which defines the Melody Makers Jam. This is a unique opportunity to get involved with like-minded creatives. Maybe you’ve got a particular tune in mind; or think that one classic would sound great arranged a different way; perhaps, even, you and a mate have been working on a track together but would love to hear what it sounds like on brass… The options couldn’t be more open, and you couldn’t hope for a higher calibre house band and more supportive audience to get things going.

When we spoke to Craig about hosting this Jam Night, he advocated a Jam based on music from the worlds of modern alternative pop, jazz, R&B, hip-hop, soul and great songwriting. Think artists ranging from Joni Mitchell to Jill Scott, Bjork to Beyonce, Kate Bush to Kendrick Lamar… Sound like your cup of tea? Bring along your instruments and vocal cords, have a chat with Craig and the band, and lets make some music.

More of a listener than a player? Book yourself a table and watch the night unfold, it’s fair to say absolutely anything could happen. One thing’s for sure, with this band and this vision, it’s going to be a good one.

A little on Melody Makers Jam leader, Craig Hanson:

Craig is an acclaimed musician on the Manchester scene. He performs and tours with many artists including 6x Grammy Nominated artist Yola. He was one half of spiritual funk jazz duo Skeltr, winning various awards and releasing two successful records. Craig is now working behind the scenes on his own brand new project (all to be revealed)…
