Led by singer/guitarist Elliot Whitty, some of the finest musicians on Manchester’s music scene are tonight’s house band. These fantastic individuals have come together through their love of creating innovative original music, and celebrating the forerunners from throughout history who harnessed their talent and musical conceptualisation to develop groundbreaking approaches to making music. Today, these artists are high-ranking inspiration for countless up-and-coming musicians, but the attitude held by those legends continues to pulse through the music scene.

It is this focus on the creation of music, in its most wonderful and broad approaches, which defines the Melody Makers Jam. This is a unique opportunity to get involved with like-minded creatives. Maybe you’ve got a particular tune in mind; or think that one classic would sound great arranged a different way; perhaps, even, you and a mate have been working on a track together but would love to hear what it sounds like on brass… The options couldn’t be more open, and you couldn’t hope for a higher calibre house band and more supportive audience to get things going.

Expect a Jam based on music from the worlds of modern alternative pop, jazz, R&B, hip-hop, soul and great songwriting. Think artists ranging from Joni Mitchell to Jill Scott, Bjork to Beyonce, Kate Bush to Kendrick Lamar… Sound like your cup of tea? Bring along your instruments and vocal cords, have a chat with Elliot and the band, and lets make some music.

More of a listener than a player? Book yourself a table and watch the night unfold, it’s fair to say absolutely anything could happen. One thing’s for sure, with this band and this vision, it’s going to be a good one.

Now in its fifth decade, the Blues Giants trio play authentic classic American Blues with music by legends such as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Jimi Hendrix, Robert Parker, Johnny Guitar Watson and more, evident in their set, as well as some soul and rock’n’ roll classics.

Steeped in the Blues and Jazz all his life, Birmingham guitarist Steve Ajao and his Blues Giants (Mike Hatton – Bass, and latest recruit, (1993!) former Au Pairs drummer Pete ‘Washboard’ Hammond) have been thrilling audiences for over 30 years and Steve is regarded by many as one of the hottest Blues guitarists in the UK, as well as being in possession of the kind of mountainous voice that was made for the Blues.

Close your eyes one moment and you’d think you were listening to a band direct from the Mississippi Delta, and the next, to Jimi Hendrix, and this powerhouse three piece remains an absolutely must-see act, especially when the band wander off, New Orleans marching band style, and mingle with the crowd.

From Blues In Britain magazine, Nov 2014: ‘There is always a good feel to any Blues Giants gigs, plenty of cheesy humour and classic Blues, played with a sparkle in the eye, enjoyable fun sessions are mandatory’

Alligator Gumbo are a 7 piece New Orleans jazz band from Leeds, who have been playing together since 2011. Having played extensively around the country, and often packed out Matt & Phred’s, we can’t wait to see them again.

A gig with Alligator Gumbo sees jazz from the hey-day of the New Orleans swing/jazz era, when music was raw and largely improvised with melodies and solos happening simultaneously which has now become defined as the 'New Orleans' sound.

As well as the band’s unique and fast-tempo treatment of the classic tunes, Alligator Gumbo take this distinctive style and apply it to their arrangements of more modern and popular songs which everyone will recognise and happily head to the dance floor upon hearing.

Marry Waterson, Lisa Knapp and Nathaniel Mann present a vivid new album and tour.

Three of the UK’s most innovative and prestigious folk artists present Blackletter Garland, a brand new album and live tour.

Inspired by historic broadside ballads – daily song sheets sold for pence from the 16th to 20th centuries – Marry, Lisa and Nathaniel rejuvenate and reinvent these stories. Fascinating interpretations and original compositions tell intricate tales of birth, love, conflict and death, with all the imagination of the folklore from which they’re based.

Arguably the forerunners of our modern news media, broadsides (also known as a broadsheet) often contained ballads and rhymes, which were sung daily in Britain’s streets and inns. Although part of living traditions of folksong, popular art and literature, these illustrated printed sheets are now rare and preserved in only a few libraries. They offer a vivid insight into the past whilst striking a chord with universal themes still relevant today. Songs about love, loneliness and kindness are interwoven with intriguing, humanist and dark stories.

Delving into the inky archives at the Bodleian Libraries and beyond, Marry Waterson, Lisa Knapp and Nathaniel Mann lead a five-piece band bringing broadsides vividly to life for a new generation and offering a rare insight into Britain’s history.

Marry Waterson – voice
Lisa Knapp – voice, fiddle, autoharp
Nathaniel Mann – voice, bowed banjo, electronics and meat cleaver
Barney Morse Brown – cello w/ pedals

KAZUTOKI UMEZU "KIKI BAND" is difficult to categorize . It may be the newest type of Jazz-Rock. Its sound may be like progressive rock.
They like unusual beats. But basically it must be jazz. If you listen the rhythm, you'll feel rock, and if you follow the melody you feel like listening ethnic music.

The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.

The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.

NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.

Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

Their charged live performances have earned them a loyal and growing fan base that’s rapidly extending out of Bristol and into the rest of the UK. On top of hosting the bi monthly funk jam at the legendary Canteen, they’ve they sold out multiple venues in their hometown (High Rise, The Lanes, Mr Wolfs to name a few), and also packed out Brixton’s Hootananny as well as Soho’s prestigious pizza express jazz cafe.

Stone Cold Hustle are set to release several original tracks over 2023. Their first single ‘The Word’ was released June 10th and received praise from radio BBC uploads Adam Crowther. Their highly anticipated second single ‘Funk in hell’ is set for release at the beginning of november. Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.

Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to perform an improvised piece, a Jazz standard, or even a Jazzy twist on a pop tune, accompanied by a stellar line up and in front of a full audience.

Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.

Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Who knows who might make an appearance tonight…

With dynamic sets that span intense balladry to soulful Blues, Jazz and Gospel. At the heart of Sam’s music is an astonishing rawness and authenticity.

'A consummate songwriter, Sam Jefferson brings a story to life.' - BBC Radio Scotland

With influences from Robert Johnson, The Allman Brothers, Wes Montgomery, to John Martyn, Bert Jansch, and Tom Waits, Sam’s virtuosic fluidity is always in service of the story behind the song.

An impressive history as a solo performer behind him, Sam established his name as a singer-songwriter, holding audiences from The Bridgewater Hall to intimate Jazz and Folk clubs with just a guitar and his voice. Now pushing the limits of solo gigs, Sam’s use of multi-track live looping has brought even greater intensity to his shows. From infectious grooves to dreamy soundscapes, Sam's ability to build up the sound of a hard driving band on stage, then strip it back to its rawest components, makes for a vital experience.

'Outstanding Musicianship' - Ralph McTell

'Really fine picking, voice, and song-writing. Sam is carrying Blues and Folk tradition on in his own way' - Toby Walker

Christian Fields Trio look to shift the perception of what a traditional jazz trio play, by rendering repertoire outside of the usual in a kaleidoscopic manner. One tune may take on many guises starting out in its original form before transmuting, from blues to classical, to hip-hop, avant-garde-experimentalism and back again.

The musicians freely explore the whole terrain of musical style and history, never bound by one genre in their sonic explorations. The trio is led by Pianist, composer Christian Fields and is joined by the fantastic Luke Flowers on drums and Grant Russell on double bass.

Expect a genre defying piano trio that explores traditional jazz as well as modern tunes from the likes of Radiohead, Nick Drake and Aphex Twin.

The band will jam the night away with players of any standard, staying true to what Blues is all about. This is the music of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Little Walter, Leadbelly, Aretha Franklin, and all those greats who defined Blues properly since the early 20th Century.

Come equipped with your steel guitars, basses, mouth organs, sticks, vocal cords, or whatever other instrument you play, and join this mighty house band to either play one of the classics or see where the beat takes you… That’s the joy of the Blues. Oh, and don’t be surprised if Franny asks you to join in on a song mid-way through it!
