King Heron are a guitar trio sprung from Bristol’s modern jazz scene, bringing together lyrical expression, hard-edged basslines and clanging rock to form their own distinct blend of progressive beats and fluttering soundscapes. Jacob Houghton’s perpetually melodic guitar phrases glide around Cerith Evans’ stoic low-end rumble and Cameron Macdougall’s deeply musical drum grooves. The clear-cut individuality in each of the musicians results in King Heron’s unapologetically different slant on the guitar trio form.

The group have shared stages with the likes of Oscar Jerome, Mdou Moctar and Lydian Collective, and performed at venues, clubs and arts centres across the UK. Their 2023 single ‘Stasis (ft. Andrew Neil Hayes)’ marked their first collaboration with a guest appearance from the Run Logan Run tenor player, in a raucous exploration that excitedly reflects a ‘Bristol sound’. Following 2023’s two single releases, the trio have their second EP, ‘Risky Business’, set for release on the 6th of September 2024.

King Heron are most at home on stage. Always groove-oriented with an emphasis on improvisation, their live performances are captivating with tunes taking their own path and never being played the same twice. At the heart of their live sound is a deep trust and connection between three friends exploring a new jazz impression together.

Plus, it’s HAPPY HOUR 6-11PM - that means buy 2 drinks and get a whole FREE PIZZA or get 2 house cocktails for just £15!

What is soul? A rousing style of music, say some. A stunning feeling, say others. It unmistakably defines who we are, according to the dictionaries. Each of these definitions applies to the Matti Klein Soul Trio, but the latter describes the essence of the trio, which was founded in 2017 and has played well over 300 concerts all over the world since then, particularly well.

Indeed, the Matti Klein Soul Trio brings together three like-minded soul mates in the name of groove, who forge an independent trail beyond the much-travelled paths of Hammond organ trios. The warm Wurlitzer sounds of band leader Matti Klein, who has already graced the most important jazz clubs in New York, Tokyo, London, and Paris with the funk-jazz formation Mo' Blow and the Brazilian yacht-pop heavyweight Ed Motta, are at the centre of the sound.

The comforting low notes of a 1973 Fender Rhodes piano bass are a unique feature of the group, as is the tasteful use of sound effects by Lars Dieterich on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet. The elastic playing of drummer André Seidel ensures that the trio's other specialty, their unabashed passion for odd meters, literally doesn’t feel so odd at all.

All of these qualities also characterise ‘Soul Trio: Bouncin’ In Bubbleverse’, the trio's third album. On the recording, Klein & Co. process their extensive touring experiences with catchy melodies and long-lasting societal observations.

Renowned soul gourmets such as BBC radio legend Robert Elms and German pop star Max Mutzke are raving about the trio's songs, in which vibrant soul jazz and instrumental funk of The Meters or The Crusaders sit organically alongside hip-hop elements or spacy post-rock. And the media response to the band's previous albums and international live shows (e.g. Haiti, Finland and a UK tour) also speaks for itself. "It grooves tremendously", was the verdict of the national radio channel Deutschlandfunk and the British magazine Jazzwise stated: "A new, smoking' hot twist on the much-loved organ trio format. They deserve to be huge everywhere!"

Matti Klein – Wurlitzer, Bass Rhodes
Lars Zander/Dieterich – Bass clarinett & Sax

Welcoming all musicians/singers to jam with the band - just chat to the band leader!

The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.

The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.

NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.

Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

The debut 2024 Pat Fulgoni Blues Experience album has received considerable acclaim, a no 3 in the UK blues airplay charts and a nomination in the UK Blues Awards.  Already with European dates under their belts “Blues in Britain” writes ‘its a blues set to cherish… Pat and co just do them so well” Reviewing 2024’s Tenby Blues Festival, Blues Matters Mag said: “There then followed an entirely different style and set of full throttle funky electric blues led by Pat Fulgoni and his Blues Experience. With a full on five piece band Fulgoni’s powerful vocal delivery worked wonders as he pushed the boat out with a confidence that highlighted this band’s importance in the growing blues world in the UK.”

In his time Pat has sung across many genres and worked with festival headlining producers from Zion Train to Camo & Krooked, London Electricity to Murdock to Coldcut and a range of weird and wonderful sounds including with Jeff Buckley / Capt Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas (NYC) as well as touring the world as a live artist and as part of Huddersfield band Kava Kava. But it’s truly magical when he sings the blues especially when backed by the stunning musicianship of this band featuring talented musicians including Jacob Beckwith on guitar, Jaden Hart on bass, Charlie Isaac on keys and Dylan Sluiter on drums. Billboard Magazine “Fulgoni could sing a pearl from its oyster”. They ain’t wrong and Blues Matters adds “completely blown away because he can sing, I mean really sing, ridiculously well”

Bacana Maresia - or Bacana for short - is a Manchester-based band that celebrates the vibrant sounds of Brazil. Founded by lead singer Beatriz Rodrigues and drummer Joel Arriaga, the project grew from their shared love for the intricate rhythms, harmonies, and emotive storytelling found within Brazilian music. To complete their vision, they teamed up with two legends in Manchester’s music scene -guitarist/singer Paolo Fuschi and guitarist/bassist Diego Prato - forming a powerful lineup.

Channelling samba, bossa nova, and Brazilian funk/soul from the 60s to the 80s, Bacana Maresia covers classics by acclaimed artists like Tim Maia, Elis Regina, and Jorge Ben Jor. Alongside these standards, the group delves into obscure gems from across Brazil, as well as songs from the wider Portuguese-speaking world, further showcasing the diversity of its musical landscape.

Though still a new project, Bacana Maresia is making its mark with regular performances at Band on the Wall’s “La Fiesta” nights. Deeply committed to Brazil’s musical roots, they deliver a vintage sound while occasionally weaving in subtle modern twists. Their live shows transport audiences to the colourful streets of Rio, São Paulo, and beyond - creating a space where, one moment, you are the girl from Ipanema...

Welcoming all musicians/singers to jam with the band - just chat to the band leader!

Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.

Led by Andy Stamatakis-Brown and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to come together with others to perform some classic Jazz, be it a 'standard' or something more modern, whilst showing the rest of the performers and audience your approach to improvisation.

Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.

Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Who knows who might make an appearance tonight…
