Bacana Maresia - or Bacana for short - is a Manchester-based band that celebrates the vibrant sounds of Brazil. Founded by lead singer Beatriz Rodrigues and drummer Joel Arriaga, the project grew from their shared love for the intricate rhythms, harmonies, and emotive storytelling found within Brazilian music. To complete their vision, they teamed up with two legends in Manchester’s music scene -guitarist/singer Paolo Fuschi and guitarist/bassist Diego Prato - forming a powerful lineup.
Channelling samba, bossa nova, and Brazilian funk/soul from the 60s to the 80s, Bacana Maresia covers classics by acclaimed artists like Tim Maia, Elis Regina, and Jorge Ben Jor. Alongside these standards, the group delves into obscure gems from across Brazil, as well as songs from the wider Portuguese-speaking world, further showcasing the diversity of its musical landscape.
Though still a new project, Bacana Maresia is making its mark with regular performances at Band on the Wall’s “La Fiesta” nights. Deeply committed to Brazil’s musical roots, they deliver a vintage sound while occasionally weaving in subtle modern twists. Their live shows transport audiences to the colourful streets of Rio, São Paulo, and beyond - creating a space where, one moment, you are the girl from Ipanema...
