Henry Botham is one of the UK’s leading Harlem Stride, Blues and New Orleans pianists, most noted for his work with 52 Skidoo, The Nightcreatures, and Mr. Wilson’s Second Liners. Henry has a huge passion for and appreciation of New Orleans piano, which draws from a wide range of influences including Blues, Jazz, Funk, R&B, Rhumba, Ragtime and even Classical music and Rock, all epitomized by the recognised master of the genre, James Booker. Audiences will not only enjoy Henry’s playing, but also his both witty and interesting introductions to both the style at large and the songs he will play.

This is the music of and inspired by Dr John, Professor Longhair, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, James P. Johnson, Willie ‘The Lion’ Smith, Luckey Roberts and Dick Wellstood. Now that’s a pretty impressive selection. Having his musical roots in traditional New Orleans music certainly doesn’t stop Henry being a pioneer of bringing this distinct style into the modern age, you can expect some surprises from Henry along the way, from Prince, to The Beatles, to The Prodigy and beyond, all remaining true to the New Orleans style.

Plus it’s HAPPY HOUR 5-6:30pm… Buy 2 selected drinks and get a whole FREE PIZZA, or get 2 house cocktails for £14!

The STARTS Award: Creative Collective
-

Saturday 14th September 2024
2:30-4pm, Free Entry

Seating is available on a first-come first-served basis.

The STARTS Award is a visual art and spoken word competition which promotes new talent and creative wellbeing for promising artists/writers/performers connected to the military community (serving or ex-service personnel or family members (18+))

The Award gives artists & writer/performers the opportunity to exhibit their artwork in a professional gallery or to perform their writing on a professional stage, as well as receiving one-to-one coaching and workshops from industry experts.

Today’s event sees 2023’s STARTS Award Winners (The ‘Creative Collective’) in the Spoken Word category bring their performances to the Matt & Phred’s stage in front of a public audience. The STARTS Award Creative Collective is a community made up of the Award’s previous winners, enabling them to continue to expand their creative practice, perform their work in a professional environment, and to share ideas.

Expect performances from Emma Davidson; Gill Charlton; Nicki Young and Graeme Gibbon Brooks. Link to further info here: https://www.thestartsaward.com/creativecollective

There will also be musical performances from the one and only Charlie Cooper! Charlie writes vintage soul, updated perfectly, sung with deep and husky soul-pipes! Not only comparable with classic voices like Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey but also up there with modern soul divas Alice Russell and Sharon Jones.

“Usually, my life centres around medical problems and trauma, but to get a positive message that something that I had done had sparked an interest in my art and voice felt like a door to a brighter future had opened” - Award Winner 2023
