The Tim Knowles Quartet are a dynamic contemporary jazz ensemble composed of four rising stars of the British scene. Crisp, folk-inflected compositions underpin vibrant exchanges - from the tender to the ecstatic - between saxophonist Emma Johnson (Emma Johnson’s Gravy Boat), double bassist John Pope (John Pope Quintet; Archipelago), drummer Sarah Heneghan (Power Out), and guitarist/bandleader Tim Knowles.
With an incorrigible and genre defying musical curiosity, Tim has cut his teeth with nu-jazz upstarts Beyond Albedo, poetry/music crossover project Genevieve Carver and the Unsung, and post-minimalist improvisers Emergence Collective. In the summer of 2021 Tim recruited some of his favourite musicians to form a new band, playing his original melody-driven material and forging a new path for himself as a bandleader and composer. Their first EP is due for release in February 2023.
The Tim Knowles quartet deliver a beguiling sound, an exhilarating live performance and a fresh take on what jazz can be.
Expect original folk-inflected contemporary jazz, drawing on a wide range of influences, including Wayne Shorter, Radiohead, and Scottish traditional music.
“Nothing casual about his playing, no sense that technical proficiency alone would do: this was music-making that was carefully crafted at every turn.” - The Whitman Review
“All four musicians soloed impressively… In particular the interplay between any two, three or all four players was, at times, totally compelling.” - Bebop Spoken Here
