The Hybrid Sessions is a monthly jam at Matt & Phred’s, inspired by cutting-edge electronic artists like Floating Points, Maribou State, Thom Yorke, and Jojo Mayer. What sets The Hybrid Sessions apart is its unique fusion of live music with electronic production. Musicians and singers have the chance to deconstruct and reshape digital sounds in real-time, pushing boundaries and exploring new ways to create.
More of a listener than a player? No problem! Come along, kick back, and enjoy the night unfolding... The music you hear has never been heard before and never will again...Whether you're into jazz, drum and bass, or anything in between, this is your chance to experience -and be part of -the future of live music.
Hosted by artist and producer Laurie Agnew, these sessions are a creative playground for all musicians to take improvisation to a new dimension. The stage is open to instrumentalists and vocalists; get in touch with @the_hybrid_sessions to check what equipment is provided and what you need to bring along.
Each Hybrid Session is fronted by a special guest artist or group in the world of electronic music, to give the night even more of a unique and distinct flavour and direction.

N O V A is a singer/songwriter born and raised right here in Manchester.
After having started out training as a classical Soprano for 10 years, during her year abroad to study music in Perugia, Italy, she fell in love with Jazz and the world around it.
Being a regular face at M&P’s weekly Jam Nights, and having raised the roof during every single one of her full band gigs, we’re very excited to welcome Nova back tonight.
N O V A’s unique and mesmerising tone, born out of her classical training, adds a distinct flavour to each of the classics she brings into her impressive and ever-growing repertoire. You can expect the performance to surround the genres of Jazz-fusion and swing covers, along with the classic jazz and blues.

The Sam Lightwing Quartet brings together four musicians who are graduates of the Royal Northern College of Music.
The group draws on inspiration from all periods of jazz (think Chick Corea, Joshua Redman and Herbie Hancock), as well as unique arrangements of standards, and some latin, funk, and blues tunes for good measure! The group has a fundamental appreciation for improvisation and that is at the fore for this evening.

Based on the idea that the song is mightier than the individual, this has formed a strong collective bringing you hand clapping, foot stomping, whistle blowing, crowd cheering music to feed your soul. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you The Soul Shebang!
Playing classic hits from Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Tina Turner and Stevie Wonder with the odd seasoning of Northern Soul from the likes of Frank Wilson and Barbara Acklin, this band is sure to fill the dance floor from the off!

Manchester based Jazz & Blues singer & pianist Jeremy Sassoon is one of the UK’s most in-demand singer/pianists. His gigs see him captivating audiences with his natural, soulful voice, and a repertoire of his arrangements of Jazz, Blues, Groove, Fusion and Soul classics.

ZANG are a superb party band who play pure, brilliant & fabulous dance floor filling classic house, Ibiza dance anthems, funky pop, R&B, & rave music.
This band is très quirky, truly unique, very talented, loads of fun and super cool. The band take serious pride in it's ability to rework and energise great songs, to surprise, delight and excite its audience. So if you want a brilliant night of music, featuring well known but not overplayed, stylish, inspirational 'bums off seats and into dance mode' tunes - that almost certainly and absolutely is ZANG!
Formed by and consisting of professional musicians in 2016, ZANG have deliberately tailored their playlist to be the polar opposite of those bog standard function bands mentioned above.

Welcoming all musicians/singers to jam with the band - just chat to the band leader!
Every 1st Monday of the month sees our resident Blues band, fronted by the fantastic Franny Eubank, take to the stage for a night of music like no other.
The band will jam the night away with players of any standard, staying true to what Blues is all about. This is the music of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Little Walter, Leadbelly, Aretha Franklin, and all those greats who defined Blues properly since the early 20th Century.
Come equipped with your steel guitars, basses, mouth organs, sticks, vocal cords, or whatever other instrument you play, and join this mighty house band to either play one of the classics or see where the beat takes you… That’s the joy of the Blues. Oh, and don’t be surprised if Franny asks you to join in on a song mid-way through it!
More of a listener than a player? No problem. Kick back in our candle-lit club in the company of gritty lyricism, 12-bar riff-led tunes, and the all-round powerful performances that the M&P Blues Jam has to offer. This is one of those nights that you simply won’t want to end.

The Hi-Stakes, featuring their iconic frontman Sam Ghezzi, is a quintet based in Amsterdam. The band makes the audience jump, dance and shout to Rhythm and Blues inspired by Louis Jordan, dream away to the sweet sound of Blues Ballads in the heritage of Percy Mayfield and shake the hips to the boogaloos of Blue Note Records of the late 50’s. Original tunes, with lyrics full of irony and passion, played authentically from a vast range of popular genres of the time, be it a lyrical blues ballad or an explosive old school rhythm ‘n blues number; in other words, their repertoire covers anything in between the jazz and the blues worlds.
The Hi-Stakes features Sam Ghezzi on vocals and tenor saxophone, Frank Groenendijk on tenor saxophone, Linus Eppinger on guitar, César Puente on upright bass and Joe Korach on drums.
The particular combination of two tenor saxophones as horn section shows their own timbre and sound in a unique and distinctive way.

Honey Bee Jazz is a collective of Jazz musicians from around the world that met in Manchester to study music, and created a session jazz band. Since then, the up and coming 4-piece band has gone from strength to strength, continually arranging songs to showcase around the MCR jazz scene.
For this extra special gig, HBJ will play popular jazz, in styles such as Swing, Ballad, and Bossa Nova, from the likes of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, as well as jazz rearrangements of music from pop genres from the 1980’s til the 2020’s… Yep, this band has it all.

Featuring a foot stomping mix of traditional Gypsy Jazz alongside the bands own exhilarating arrangements of contemporary pop songs from the modern era, there's something for jazz aficionados and music lovers alike.
Alongside Jim's virtuosic Django Reinhardt inspired lead guitar the band features the improvisational talents of some of the North West's finest Gypsy Jazz soloists in Andrzej Baranek (accordion) and Andrew Meyer (clarinet), backed up by a stellar swinging Gypsy rhythm section. Rarely has such a delicate balance been successfully struck between the artistic and the absurd.

Dan Burnett is a singer, songwriter, and freelance multi-instrumentalist musician based in the UK. With influences stemming from the soul, acoustic, and blues genres, Dan’s songs will take you on emotional journeys about life, love, and heartbreak.
Playing regularly throughout the year, Dan is also a library music composer for film and TV. He has co-written and recorded music which featured on ‘Stolen’ (Nicolas Cage), and ‘Supernatural’ (USA TV series), among many others. Since 2014, Dan has been an international endorser of Kawai Pianos.
Expect to hear Dan's favourites from his musical upbringing in Soul, Blues and Funk. On top of this, you’ll get to hear some of Dan’s absolutely mesmerising original material which we at M&P’s are in love with.

Alligator Gumbo are a 7 piece New Orleans jazz band from Leeds, who have been playing together since 2011. Having played extensively around the country, and often packed out Matt & Phred’s, we can’t wait to see them again.
A gig with Alligator Gumbo sees jazz from the hey-day of the New Orleans swing/jazz era, when music was raw and largely improvised with melodies and solos happening simultaneously which has now become defined as the 'New Orleans' sound.

Welcoming all musicians/singers to jam with the band - just chat to the band leader!
Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.
Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to come together with others to perform some classic Jazz, be it a 'standard' or something more modern, whilst showing the rest of the performers and audience your approach to improvisation.
Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.
Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Vocalist and songwriter Nishla Smith and long-time collaborator trumpeter Aaron Wood bring together a hand-picked ensemble of exceptional jazz musicians for a special series of seasonal concerts, celebrating the release of a new festive EP.
The Things We Did Last Summer features an original Christmas song alongside a collection of the best-loved wintery jazz standards. Born and raised in Dallas Texas, Andrew picked up the piano and started gigging at the age of 14. By 21, they were delighting audiences on several different cruise ships, before eventually settling down and relocating to Manchester.

The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.
The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.
NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.

It’s nearly Christmas, and we’re keeping the M&P festivities going tonight with one of our all-time favourite performers, live on stage with her band… Charlie Cooper!
Charlie is bringing her brilliant soulful voice to the piano, joined by drums and horns for a proper Christmas party. From Last Christmas, to Fairytale of New York, to Merry Christmas Everybody and so very far beyond, there’ll be big festive favourites, some well-loved pop classics and a selection of carols thrown into the mix. It’s going to be the perfect festive vibe.
Expect big singalongs, songs you definitely know the words to (even if you pretend you don’t), a few Christmas curveballs and all the fun and energy you’d expect from a night with Charlie at our little club. We’ll even have lyric sheets for some of the carols, so get involved and have a good old singalong!

The Max Rosen Trio is a Manchester-based force that breathes fresh life into the jazz scene. Fusing timeless jazz standards with funky grooves, folk influences, and innovative original compositions, the trio try and keep the art of improvisation alive by showcasing all of these elements live on stage to the audience. Inspired by the virtuosity of legends like Brad Mehldau and Keith Jarrett, George, Pete and Max all met at university having played with each other throughout their studies.
The Max Rosen Trio have recently headlined Mindslip at Habitat Studios, and have a series of exciting gigs and new projects on the horizon, as well as being extremely excited to bring their music to Matt and Phred’s.

The All Star Jam is the night you want to be at if you love the all-time classics of the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. We encourage all musicians, singers, and MC’s to come along and give performing in front of the M&P audience a go. Whether there’s a particular musician you just love to sing the music of, or if there’s a bass line that you’ve finally mastered and now want to give it a go with a full band, or whatever else takes your fancy on the night, instrument in hand… Anything goes! Mat Walklate and James Lawley are two of the most highly regarded Blues musicians in the North, and have regularly performed at Matt & Phred’s both as a duo and within other full bands, notably with the great Franny Eubank.
Mat Walklate is a forceful, dynamic harmonica-player, with a rich, soulful baritone Blues singing style, with which he brings a sensational mix of classic melodious Blues tunes and original numbers to the stage.

Led by prolific Manchester saxophonist Kyran Matthews, this quartet brings together some of the city’s finest jazz musicians for a set full of melodic playing, inventive improvisation and plenty of groove. With a sound rooted in the rich traditions of jazz but open to contemporary influences, expect a relaxed yet engaging performance from a group of musicians who know how to make a small room feel special.
Kyran’s career has taken him from jazz clubs and festivals across Europe and South Africa to performances with ensembles including NYJO, Beats & Pieces and the BBC Philharmonic.
