NOTE: Usually the New Orleans Jam is every 3rd Monday of the month, but due to Manchester Jazz Festival this month’s jam is tonight (2nd Monday).
The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.
The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.
NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.
Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

Two Manchester institutions come together in the name of solidarity in the grassroots live music industry. Jimmy’s is set to take over Matt & Phred’s for a series of nights with the goal of spotlighting the significance of independent venues within the cultural scene of Manchester and beyond.
At a time when independent businesses are facing more hardship than ever before, this collaboration gives people the opportunity to do something significant; playing a role in the effort to maintain grassroots venues, whilst supporting independent and emerging talent.
Jimmy’s Takeover at Matt & Phred’s will be exactly what it sounds like. On these nights, Jimmy's team will work hand-in-hand with the M&P’s to curate a very special event. Taking their attitude towards live music and bringing it through the doors of the backstreet jazz club. These nights will be headlined by superb artists, supported by yet more local emerging talent, all in the genres of Rock’n’Roll, Indie, and Blues.
The show will be presented in collaboration with Manchester based independent promoters Greyline, who promote shows nationally and program a number of venues in Manchester’s grassroots music scene.
The first iteration of Jimmy’s takeover of Matt & Phreds will aptly serve as the single release party for Denver County Council’s sophomore studio single “Mad Love”. Having played sold out shows at the likes of 33 Oldham Street & Deansgates’ The Lions Den the 10th of May will be their debut headline and biggest show yet.
With support from: Michael Gallagher, Tommy Ball, and Sid Cooper.
More on Denver County Council:
Denver County Council, a dynamic Manchester based five-piece, emerged when guitarist Jake Chatts, discovered a stash of demos on his MacBook yearning for purpose. A chance night in their hometown reunited Jake with Luke Denvers (vocals), rekindling their dream. Luke's captivation with the demos sparked creativity and the two began laying down vocals. Together, with Josh Leach, George Stead, and Ryan Comac, DCC formed—a sonic collaboration described as a match made in heaven.
Taking strong influence from Americana but quintessentially northern at their core. Denver County Council boasts a clashing of worlds that hits the sonic highways as one of the most exciting new bands on the scene.

'The album closes on a majestic crescendo that is yet another of the many disparate characteristics that go up to make one of the album releases of the year for this reviewer. Gracefulness and power are very difficult to attain without upsetting the equilibrium, but this release manages that fine balancing act with a great deal of dignity.'-John Toolan Jazz Goes To Leeds (For the Greater Good Album Review )

Inspired by modern electronic musicians such as Floating Points, Maribou State, Thom Yorke and Jojo Mayer, Matt and Phreds new night The Hybrid Sessions sets out to reverse engineer digital music and to explore its creation through a combination of live instrumentation with electronic production.
Curated by drummer and artist Laurie Agnew, this new night aims to open doors for musicians who wish to explore electronic music and improvisation.
Each event will feature a guest artist, which will imbue each night with idiosyncrasy and individuality. The stage will also be open for others to join in with the music, be it as an instrumentalist or vocalist.
A hybrid drum kit, percussion and Ableton Push will be available as well as vocal mics, guitar and bass amp. The opportunity to create live music with an electronic aesthetic will be instantaneous.
The inclusion of unique instrumentation is actively encouraged (the stranger the better) however, if your instrument will require particular time or attention to set up please contact the venue before hand.
The goal of The Hybrid Sessions is to be an inclusive space but participation will be at the organisers discretion. Respect must be shown to the artists with which you are playing and to the equipment provided, but above all else participation will require a commitment to the risk of creating live music through improvisation. Dock of the Bay is a wonderful song, but this is not the night for it.
Plus, it’s HAPPY HOUR 6-11PM - that means buy 2 drinks and get a whole FREE PIZZA or get 2 house cocktails for just £14!
