Paul has played all over the world as a guitarist, and in the studio as a pianist/synth player, this is a chance to hear him play piano and sing live, to show where his musical influences began.
For fans of The Doors, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, 80s new romantics and 90s Britpop.

Welcoming all musicians/singers to jam with the band - just chat to the band leader!
The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.
The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.
NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.
Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

For this extra special Jam Night, Matt & Phred’s are teaming up with Manchester Jazz Festival to give all singers and musicians the opportunity to come down to our little backstreet Jazz Club and get on stage to perform. We are happy to announce that this year’s Jazz Jam will be led by the prolific drummer and artist Johnny Hunter, whose band is composed of equally reputable musicians. The stage is open to all musicians to get up and play with the house band and fellow jammers.
This is a unique experience to come together with others to perform some classic Jazz, be it a 'standard' or something more modern, whilst showing the rest of the performers and audience your approach to improvisation. Bring along your vocal cords, guitars, brass, strings, and whatever other instruments you play, and play alongside like-minded music lovers.
Over the years, the Matt & Phred’s Jam Nights have attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band, to name but a few... Who knows who might be in the audience and on stage tonight. You can certainly expect to see some familiar faces from the rest of the Manchester Jazz Festival line up, as well as those who have built a stellar reputation among the Northern music scene.
More of a listener than a player? No problem, there will be plenty of room for you to kick back and watch the evening unfold. It’s fair to say anything could happen.

BOOK A ‘DATE DEAL’ TABLE (£30)
Booking a table is recommended, but you can just turn up if you’re happy standing. For bookings of 9+ guests, or if you’d prefer a phone reservation, call 0161 273 5495 (10am-5pm Mon-Fri) / 0161 831 7002 (5-11pm Mon-Sat).
Hania Derej - composer, pianist, arranger and conductor. Student of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (jazz composition and arrangement) and the Music Academy in Kraków (symphonic conducting). The young artist is the author of over 130 compositions, some of which have been recorded on nine CDs. Hania creates music in a variety of styles, including illustrative, jazz, chamber, film or electronic music. She has won composition and performance awards.
As the Hania Derej Quintet, she released the album Evacuation in 2024 through the Dutch label ZenneZ Records. The group played dozens of concerts at jazz festivals, community centres and music clubs throughout Poland. Music from the album has made its way onto prestigious playlists on streaming platforms, where it has reached 142 countries, with the highest listening figures in the USA, Poland, Canada, Germany and Japan respectively.
The Hania Derej Trio is a new jazz project by a young artist featuring Hania's compositions. The main idea is to maintain fluidity, coherence and melodiousness with a jazz base. The music presented by the ensemble is a more delicate version of jazz with neo-classical, cinematic harmonies.
Nevertheless, there are a lot of contrasting factors present, which create an impressionistic picture full of colours and hues. This is another chapter in the artist's work, who uses sound to paint a picture of a great dynamic of events, a multitude of responsibilities and constant travels, all served in a gentle and optimistic form, where the music is a description, but also a moment to unwind emotions. In addition, some of the pieces include the participation of special guests who join in this multicoloured work.

Alligator Gumbo are a 7 piece New Orleans jazz band from Leeds, who have been playing together since 2011. Having played extensively around the country, and often packed out Matt & Phred’s, we can’t wait to see them again.
A gig with Alligator Gumbo sees jazz from the hey-day of the New Orleans swing/jazz era, when music was raw and largely improvised with melodies and solos happening simultaneously which has now become defined as the 'New Orleans' sound.
As well as the band’s unique and fast-tempo treatment of the classic tunes, Alligator Gumbo take this distinctive style and apply it to their arrangements of more modern and popular songs which everyone will recognise and happily head to the dance floor upon hearing.
Line Up: James Paylor (Double Bass/Vocals), Chris Williamson (Trumpet), Greg Surmacz (Clarinet/Saxophone), Tim Hurst (Trombone/Vocals), Mike Rudland-Simpson (Steel Guitar/Vocals), Chris Lloyd (Piano/Vocals), Jose Williamson (Drums/Washboard/Bells/Whistles)
