Aaron Liddard - ‘Nylon Man’
Forty two musicians recorded the album, but they’re not all on the tour.
The band will be a sextet with Aaron Liddard on sax and piano, singer Giulia Marelli, multi-instrumentalist Kwame Yeboah, bassist Paul Michael, drummer Jimmy Norden and percussionist Eric Young.
They will play many of the songs and instrumentals from Aaron’s new album ‘Nylon Man’, plus some tunes by artists Aaron has worked with or met along the way, such as Amy Winehouse, Prince, Maceo Parker, Michael Henderson, Airto Moriera, Flora Purim, & Mike Stern.
‘Nylon man’ is the new album by saxophonist-keyboardist-arranger-composer Aaron Liddard, released on 7th October on the British independent label Havis House. Featuring a plethora of guest contributions from the likes of Carleen Anderson, Omar Puente and Miss Baby Sol, Nylon Man is 12 tracks of jazz by a UK-based artist, influenced by music of Europe, North and South America, the Caribbean and Africa.
In his prolific and wide-ranging career, saxophonist-keyboardist-arranger-composer Aaron Liddard has contributed to many different musical experiences including working with Amy Winehouse, Prince, and Maceo Parker, and in genres ranging from hip hop and rock to Latin music and gospel. But jazz has always been the closest music to his heart. “Jazz is the only living musical art-form that is not defined by its exclusions,” says Aaron. “At its truest, jazz is an evolving aural tradition. As a musician with myriad musical influences, jazz is the only home that allows me to fully explore.”
Nylon Man is named after the three cities that most influenced Aaron (New York, London and Manchester). The album was 12 years in the making and a summation of Liddard’s career to this point.

The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.
The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.
NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.
Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

Ayanam is a Nigerian singer but considers his "musical home" to be Manchester. He grew up in Nigeria but moved to the UK at the age of 16 and it's reflected in his musical style - taking inspiration from everyone from the Nsync to Outlandish to Paolo Nutini, and the Kooks - his musical taste is definitely "eclectic", but what he enjoys doing is taking songs from every genre and playing around with their conventions, turning the most bubble gum of pop songs into neo soul musings.
A lyricist at heart, having written poetry since 16, his raspy tone may remind you of passionate crooners like Rob Thomas and Paolo Nutini. Although most of his sets are covers. His original songs explore his struggles with anxiety as he finds it therapeutic.
In 2019, Ayanam was a member of Sir Tom Jones' team on The Voice UK getting as far as the knockouts. We think you’ll agree that this gig is set to be something very special indeed!

Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to perform an improvised piece, a Jazz standard, or even a Jazzy twist on a pop tune, accompanied by a stellar line up and in front of a full audience.
Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.
Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Born in Liverpool and blessed in Rio, Baiana is the band with the totally tropical twist, bringing the music, glamour and charm of vintage Brazilian jazz and pop to every show. The band has played sold-out shows in London’s jazzland and got national coverage after a series of sell-out gigs at the Edinburgh Festival. Baiana is all about the thrill of Brazil and will be playing classic Bossa Novas, seductive sambas and Latin-inspired arrangements of well-known standards. Sometimes reflective, always full of passion, this will be a night of infectious rhythm, superb musicianship, and beautiful song.
Laura Doyle, the front lady of Baiana, became an entertainer after studying clowning with the great Philippe Gaulier in Paris and developed her unique voice and style on the "underground cabaret" scene in London and elsewhere. She fell in love with Brazilian music while living in Rio where she rubbed shoulders with some of the world's most famous people, including Fidel Castro and Sophia Loren. A born-entertainer, Laura's colourful costumes and charismatic performances always have audiences shouting for more.

Every 1st Monday of the month sees our resident Blues band, fronted by the fantastic Franny Eubank, take to the stage for a night of music like no other.
The band will jam the night away with players of any standard, staying true to what Blues is all about. This is the music of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Little Walter, Leadbelly, Aretha Franklin, and all those greats who defined Blues properly since the early 20th Century.
Come equipped with your steel guitars, basses, mouth organs, sticks, vocal cords, or whatever other instrument you play, and join this mighty house band to either play one of the classics or see where the beat takes you… That’s the joy of the Blues. Oh, and don’t be surprised if Franny asks you to join in on a song mid-way through it!
More of a listener than a player? No problem. Kick back in our candle-lit club in the company of gritty lyricism, 12-bar riff-led tunes, and the all-round powerful performances that the M&P Blues Jam has to offer. This is one of those nights that you simply won’t want to end.

We are beyond delighted to be welcoming the one and only Tango Jazz Quartet back to Matt & Phred’s… ALL THE WAY FROM ARGENTINA!
It goes without saying that this is going to be a very special and rare evening.
This showcase is a unique musical fusion of Tango and Jazz, a fascinating journey from the origins of traditional Tango to the innovative proposals of Astor Piazzolla’s music.
Tango Jazz Quartet magically captures the harmonies and the improvisation of jazz to blend them with the melodies and rhythms of tango. The striking contrast between the vibrant and playful “milongas”, the romantic “tango-waltzes”, and the electrifying music of Piazzola will not leave anyone in the audience indifferent.
The band has also worked in the production of musical films: it has produced the documentary “Tango Meets Jazz”, premiered at the 2020 Black Mountain Jazz Festival in Wales and the film “Centenary of Music and Composer Astor Piazzolla”, together with Welsh violinist Xenia Porteus premiered at the 2021 Brecon Jazz Festival in Wales.
Saxophonist and clarinetist Gustavo Firmenich, leader of TJQ recreated with this band the dancing evenings that were common in the golden era of the tango in Buenos Aires, where Tango and Jazz lived together although playing separately.
Founded in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2009 and after more than 10 years of uninterrupted tours, Tango Jazz Quartet has consolidated its presence in the music scene of most places in the world.
Band members:
Martín Rao de Vita, on bass
Santiago Villalba, on piano
Mauricio Pasculli, on drums
Gustavo Firmenich, on tenor sax and clarinet

Henry Botham is one of the UK’s leading Harlem Stride, Blues and New Orleans pianists, most noted for his work with 52 Skidoo, The Nightcreatures, and Mr. Wilson’s Second Liners. With Henry’s hugely diverse musical ability being clear, it’s fair to say that his solo performances are something truly special.
Henry has a huge passion for and appreciation of New Orleans piano, which draws from a wide range of influences including Blues, Jazz, Funk, R&B, Rhumba, Ragtime and even Classical music and Rock, all epitomized by the recognised master of the genre, James Booker. Audiences will not only enjoy Henry’s playing, but also his both witty and interesting introductions to both the style at large and the songs he will play.
This is the music of and inspired by Dr John, Professor Longhair, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, James P. Johnson, Willie ‘The Lion’ Smith, Luckey Roberts and Dick Wellstood. Now that’s a pretty impressive selection.
Having his musical roots in traditional New Orleans music certainly doesn’t stop Henry being a pioneer of bringing this distinct style into the modern age, you can expect some surprises from Henry along the way, from Prince, to The Beatles, to The Prodigy and beyond, all remaining true to the New Orleans style.
