James Bagnall is a classically trained musician, writing modern piano music with strong harmonies and intimate melodies. During his studies of music at Huddersfield University, James took inspiration from the lyricism of Chopin and the modern-day works of Nils Frahm and Olafur Arnalds. James has an improvisational style, attempting to recreate his music on stage, while taking in the ambience of the setting.
Being a fan of the modern day take on classical music by James Rhodes, James is keen on the idea of classical and modern piano music being accessible, and not for the privileged few. Why should it not be enjoyed with a group of friends and a few good beers?!

We are delighted to be welcoming the hugely popular Kyla Brox back to the club this evening, backed by her full band. Kyla Brox can be tender, urgent and gritty: she blurs the distinction between pleasure and pain like the soul greats of old.
To listen to her versions of ‘Feelin’ Good’ and ‘At Last’ is to understand how completely she has absorbed the related forms of soul and blues. Respectively associated with Nina Simone and Etta James, they remind that strong women are a vital part of Afro-American and Lancashire culture.
Kyla balances extremes of tenderness and strength like no other singer of her generation, and belts out the blues like a Janis Joplin who has come through. And then there’s her transposition of Deep Southern Soul to northern climes. She sings in her native accent, because, for Kyla, there is no separation between life and art. That “does mytuuch make you quiver?” is to be cherished. Kyla is triumphantly a deep Lancashire diva.
Tonight's performance will evoke a combination of them all. Fellow musician and songwriting partner Danny Blomeley, and his virtuoso guitar-work, are joined by a full band for this special gig.

Born and bred in London, Nicky Phillips felt the pull to move north, writing and sharing her open-hearted songs through intimate performances across North West England. Nicky has spent many years performing live, but 2020 had other plans. As a result, Nicky started sharing her music on Instagram and soon after connected with producer Joel Schwartz to begin her recording career.
Nicky released her self-titled EP in August 2021, featuring her debut single ‘Echo’ which was released in April 2021. The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.
The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.
NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.
Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

Influenced by 60s Blue Note artists and contemporary pillars of the scene, Nye draws inspiration from the likes of Wayne Shorter and Ambrose Akinmusire. Combining with a love for orchestral music, Nye concocts an audiofeast of anthemic melodies, menacing harmonies, and earth-moving rhythms.
All Change EP (2018, featuring Dylan Jones of Ezra Collective) explored creative jazz improvisation driven by Nye’s deep admiration for modern African-American music. Akinmusire’s complete freedom of expression in A Rift in Decorum and Kendrick Lamar’s approach to first person narrative in To Pimp A Butterfly influences the EP both sonically and conceptually, giving the music a rich tapestry of perspectives.
Nye’s debut Album will be released in 2022, featuring Mark Kavuma (trumpeter and leader of The Banger Factory). The work builds upon Nye’s compositional approach to jazz music in a modern framework of group improvisation and expression. With Rupert Cox on piano, Hamish Nockles-Moore on double bass and Ewan Moore on drums, Nye’s group create a gripping and intense live experience that is not to be missed

The Chanteuse, Lucy Hope, is one of the UK’s leading and most devoted exponents of French chanson. These powerful songs that she reinterprets with her own je ne sais quoi have become a Gallic soundtrack to love, passion and heartbreak.
Throughout the night, Lucy will be staging the songs from her album, “The Chanteuse sings Modiano”. The record is a collection of the songs written in the 1960s and 1970s by the Nobel Prize for Literature winning French author, Patrick Modiano.
The Chanteuse will also be performing chanson classics from the oeuvres of Jacques Brel to Edith Piaf; Georges Brassens to Barbara. The band will also throw in a few Django Reinhardt inspired gypsy jazz numbers for good fun and good measure! Ooh là là!

Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.
Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to perform an improvised piece, a Jazz standard, or even a Jazzy twist on a pop tune, accompanied by a stellar line up and in front of a full audience. Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.
Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Who knows who might make an appearance tonight…

The Horse Puppets are an indie/folk band from Manchester fronted by Paul and Helen Bytheway.
The Horse Puppets recorded their first album ‘Sorry For The Inconvenience’ in late 2019. The use of pedal steel and violin as well as analogue synths, double bass and vocal harmonies gave the album an eclectic sound described as Lou Reed meets Pulp. In lockdown 2020, Helen and Paul hosted a live streamed album launch. The single ‘Which Way To Go’ from the album was included in the ‘Fresh on the net’ playlist by Tom Robinson (6music).
After a full year of streaming with their acoustic duo and ‘lockdown’ style remote recordings with the rest of the band, The Horse Puppet's music has developed into to a more rootsy acoustic folk. Their newest songs ‘Where I Want To Be’ and ‘Make It Better’ have adopted a sound closer to The Lumineers meets Fleetwood Mac with an acoustic mix of violin, double bass, piano, guitar and large vocal harmonies.
“Love that whole swampy Dr John/Alabama 3 groove thing” - Tom Robinson, Fresh on the net & BBC 6 music
“One of those line ups you wouldn’t have seen 10 years ago…..very organic…they’re great to listen to” - Mike Sweeney, BBC Radio Manchester
Line Up:
Helen Bytheway - vocals, piano, accordion
Paul Bytheway - vocals, guitar, bass drum
Tommy Fuller - double bass, backing vocals
Kath Ord - violin, backing vocals

Christian Fields Trio look to shift the perception of what a traditional jazz trio play, by rendering repertoire outside of the usual in a kaleidoscopic manner. One tune may take on many guises starting out in its original form before transmuting, from blues to classical, to hip-hop, avant-garde-experimentalism and back again.
The musicians freely explore the whole terrain of musical style and history, never bound by one genre in their sonic explorations. The band is led by Pianist, composer Christian Fields and is joined by Luke Flowers from the band Cinematic Orchestra, and Grant Russell on Bass.
Expect a genre defying piano trio that explores traditional jazz as well as modern tunes from the likes of Radiohead, Nick Drake and Aphex Twin.
