And so comes the end of Mardi Gras week at Matt & Phred’s, so tonight needed to be special. Creating the sounds of New Orleans during a M&P early-evening gig called for one man…
Henry Botham is one of the UK’s leading Harlem Stride, Blues and New Orleans pianists, most noted for his work with 52 Skidoo, The Nightcreatures, and Mr. Wilson’s Second Liners. With Henry’s hugely diverse musical ability being clear, it’s fair to say that his solo performances are something truly special.
Henry has a huge passion for and appreciation of New Orleans piano, which draws from a wide range of influences including Blues, Jazz, Funk, R&B, Rhumba, Ragtime and even Classical music and Rock, all epitomized by the recognised master of the genre, James Booker. Audiences will not only enjoy Henry’s playing, but also his both witty and interesting introductions to both the style at large and the songs he will play.
This is the music of and inspired by Dr John, Professor Longhair, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, James P. Johnson, Willie ‘The Lion’ Smith, Luckey Roberts and Dick Wellstood. Now that’s a pretty impressive selection.
Having his musical roots in traditional New Orleans music certainly doesn’t stop Henry being a pioneer of bringing this distinct style into the modern age, you can expect some surprises from Henry along the way, from Prince, to The Beatles, to The Prodigy and beyond, all remaining true to the New Orleans style.

Time to do Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) properly at Matt & Phred’s! With a phenomenal New Orleans-inspired, brass-heavy band on stage and free pizza and cocktail deals all night long!
With an ironic nod towards both religion and Voodoo, Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is the annual New Orleans festival of street parades, food, drink, music, madness and a large helping of good natured debauchery before the runup to Easter..
The Fat Tuesday Four play the good time rough and raffish music originated by Buddy Bolden, Louis "Big Eye" Nelson, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Freddie Keppard and a host of others, on the legendary Mississippi steamers, the dodgy dives of Bourbon Street, Basin St and the infamous Lulu White's Mahogany Hall. It is the original party music of New Orleans which kept the dancehalls jumping every night and made the Roaring Twenties bellow. So leave propriety at the door, get your party heads on, turn Matt & Phreds into the French Quarter and have a right good blowout........ Dress optional ...... Beer drinking compulsory.
Plus, it’s HAPPY HOUR ALL NIGHT - that means buy 2 drinks and get a whole FREE PIZZA or get 2 house cocktails for just £12!

Could there be a more perfect start to Mardi Gras week than the M&P New Orleans Jam?!
The big sounds of New Orleans come to M&P’s for the New Orleans Jam, held every 3rd Monday of the month and hosted by mighty house band The Nightcreatures. With a strong emphasis on the involvement of brass, these monthly Jam sessions are sure to make you feel like you’ve travelled over the Atlantic to Louisiana.
The New Orleans Jam sees our little jazz club filled with the blaring brass, Rhythm and Blues, Second Line Grooves, Street Beats, Funk, Rock’n’Roll, and Rhumba of New Orleans, where the round-the-clock atmosphere sees never ending music filling the streets… This is the music of Dr. John, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, and Professor Longhair, to name but a few, and those who come by to play at the jams follow in their footsteps tremendously.
NOLA tunes really are in a class of their own, being seen by many as the true origin of traditional jazz. The bringing together of musicians in New Orleans, to all be united by music, is all about the atmosphere of a live performance. Horns aplenty, thundering drums, heavy guitar riffs, and whatever other instrument might appear would come together to create a sound to celebrate life and ensure the party never stops. The M&P New Orleans Jam sees musicians from any background brought together by this same attitude to live music. So long as it’s played in a New Orleans style… Anything goes.
Come down and experience the wonders of the Jam happening in front of your eyes, and don’t be surprised if you’re persuaded to have a good old dance too.

Moore & Fairhall are a folk-jazz accordion and violin duo, based in Manchester. They bring together Indian ragas, American folk, and jazz from all eras, resulting in music that is lyrical, passionate and highly rhythmic. Adam and Olivia met when they were selected for Edition VI of Serious’ prestigious ‘Take Five’ Artist Development Scheme, and this duo is the result of their shared interest in a jazz approach to folk and world traditions.
Olivia (violin) has studied in India with her guru Kala Ramnath, and is a long-established bandleader, fusing her love for Indian music and jazz in groups such as the Owl Ensemble and Unfurl. She performs nationally and internationally with her own projects and with artists such as Elaha Soroor (Afghanistan) and Alabaster DePlume. Much in demand for her intoxicating, microtonally-inflected playing style, Olivia is currently a member of Milapfest's Indo Jazz Club band with superstar pianist Zoe Rahman.
“Nourished by Indian and jazz traditions, but with an elegance that comes from her classical training, Olivia Moore’s violin has an Eastern tang that is genuinely entrancing” – Manchester Evening News
Adam (accordion) is probably best known as the pianist in Nat Birchall’s acclaimed Coltrane-inspired groups, and for his trademark ‘ragtime-to-free’ eclecticism as a jazz pianist. Over the past several years he has been working intensely on his accordion playing to get closer to the folk and roots music which has always informed his approach. The result is an accordion style that incorporates ostinato bass lines, innovative rhythmic bellow techniques and free-flowing melodic improvisation.
“A hugely accomplished instrumentalist” – The Wire
“Adam Fairhall is a total star” – Independent on Sunday

Every 2nd Monday of the month sees M&P’s become an unmatched nucleus of all things Jazz for both local musicians and visitors to musically express themselves in a way nowhere else can offer.
Led by Johnny Hunter and his band, musicians of any level, brought together by their love of Jazz, are welcomed to the M&P stage to jam the night away alongside some of the finest musicians in the North. This is a unique experience to perform an improvised piece, a Jazz standard, or even a Jazzy twist on a pop tune, accompanied by a stellar line up and in front of a full audience.
Whilst the Jazz Jam can very much go anywhere, we are passionate about keeping things true to Jazz. These jams are all about recreating the atmosphere and excitement of 1940's venues Minton's Playhouse and Monroe's where this music was created, and musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams learned their craft and developed the Bebop language.
Come along and watch the evening unfold. Anything can happen. Over the years, our famous Jazz Jam has attracted the likes of Chuck Perkins, Lonnie Liston Smith, Benn Clatworth, as well as members of Riot Jazz Brass Band, GoGo Penguin, and the Beats & Pieces Big Band. Who knows who might make an appearance tonight…

Whilst this particular band is a relatively new one, its members are certainly well-established within the music scene.
This line up is made up of a talented team of creative musicians, known for their technical abilities and musical versatility, has been put together with a view to playing their take on, (among others), music played by the likes of Brecker Brothers, Yellow Jackets, Bob James, David Sanborn and others.
Tonight, Graham Dean (drums) and Jose Carah (bass) are joined by:
George King - Piano
George's career to date includes performances and collaborations with a huge variety of artists. His career as a classical pianist has led him to perform at venues all over the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Wigmore Hall and the Purcell Room. He is also an improviser of rare quality. His stylistic range covers many musical paths, whether it is a solo free improvisation piano recital. This versatility has led to performances at festivals including Glastonbury, Womad and Jazz festivals all over the world.
Dean Masser - Saxophone
A commanding player with a big sound and an engaging stage manner is, like the title of his first album as a leader suggests, very much “Old School”, continuing the legacy of the music he was exposed to from an early age: Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and the sounds of players like Ben Webster, Lester Young and Eddie Lockjaw Davis.
This evening, expect a broad variety of fantastic music from these four prolific musicians. From Swinging Jazz, to Bebop Classics, to standards from the Great American Songbook!

BLIND MONK put a fresh, modern spin on the classic sax/bass/drums trio format.
With influences from the whole history of the genre (Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, FLY, Avishai Cohen (Trumpet), J.D. Allen Trio ...) blended with dark cinematic grooves and eastern folk.
Their latest material forges all our wide ranging influences - jazz, folk, beats, african, asian, classical, cinematic, rock, electronic into a unique sound firmly steeped in the legendary chordless groups of Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry and the compositions of Thelonious Monk, yet simultaneously yielding a current UK jazz revivalist vibe.

The band will jam the night away with players of any standard, staying true to what Blues is all about. This is the music of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Etta James, Little Walter, Leadbelly, Aretha Franklin, and all those greats who defined Blues properly since the early 20th Century.
Come equipped with your steel guitars, basses, mouth organs, sticks, vocal cords, or whatever other instrument you play, and join this mighty house band to either play one of the classics or see where the beat takes you… That’s the joy of the Blues. Oh, and don’t be surprised if Franny asks you to join in on a song mid-way through it!

CLARKY
Clarky (Adam Clarke) is a loop artist based in Manchester who specialises in beatboxing, vocal effects, and live looping. Coming from a beatboxing background, his sound covers a wide range of vocal instrumentation which allows him – together with live looping – to create his own soundscapes, rhythms, noises, and any other sound he can think of. All sounds are generated live during each performance which allows for an entirely unique experience every show, like drawing from a blank canvas.
About three years ago, Clarky started coding his own unique set of controllers on iPads which opened up the ability to control a range of vocal multi-effects at a component level. It also lent itself to further allowing detail and nuance to be applied to improvising live performances, creating even more interesting movements that drive the music.
He has performed with local artists such as Shunya, The Kora Collective, and put together a band in London, Ophelia. His setup allows him to span many genre types and work with other artists from a variety of musical backgrounds. Expect anything from downtempo R’n’B, to intense jungle, to more!
